So does your phone alert you when there are Pokemon near you if your phone is locked? Seems like it would get old if you are alerted only when the app is open, meaning you have to keep it open everywhere you go else risk losing out on something good.

So I caught my Charmander, I whiffed the first two pokeballs and caught in on my third try. I didn't really understand how I'm supposed to flick it, but was that first pokemon one of those "you can't fail at this" scenarios? or did I just waste 2 pokeballs?
