When did the series peak?

when did the series peak?

Brawl

3DS/Wii U.

After the roster/content in that game, there's no way to top it.

Melee. What kind of silly question is that? The only people that liked Brawl or 4 are quantity obsessed kids or rosterfags that see merit in more characters or a shitty story mode or 4 tourneyfags that aren't good enough to play melee and are delusional enough to believe 4 is more balanced.

SSB = DeS
SSBM = DaS
SSBB = DaS 2
SSB4 = DaS 3

you decide.

previously it was melee, now its Sm4sh

>Brawl is the best

Sounds about right.

it's a party game.

4 is the best

[ ]hipster with good taste
[ ]cool guy
[]hipster with bad taste
[ ]cool guy with mediocre taste

My favorite way to play Smash is Project M, but otherwise I have a lot of fun with both 64 and Melee.

The single-player content in 4 is mediocre at best and the physics are sluggish as fuck because of the lack of momentum transfer between running and jumping.

melee

Actually
SSB = Arena
SSBM = Morrowind
SSBB = Skyrim
SSB4 = TESO

N64 Smash is really still the best. Least glitches and the comboing is satisfying.

Brawl was the best years of Smash Bros for me. I enjoyed it in the span of its release to pre-Smash3DS launch. I can't go back to it now though but it was funner times than presently with 4.

>Smash 4 roster with Corrin removed
Instant better roster.

It's a party game user dont take it too seriously

64

Melee, but not because loltournament scene, it's because it was actually a proper balance between casual and competent. It took the fun of 64, and enhanced it without removing any crucial features. Items were fun and crazy, but also fair and balanced in their own ways. Never anything ridiculous like the gust jar.
Brawl took the casualization too far in one direction and neutered the gameplay, and Sm4sh took the casualization too far in another and ruined the stages and items.

A Smash game with 4's roster and balance, Brawl's stage design and side modes, Melee's physics and items, and 64's wacky styling would be the perfect game.

>skipping Daggerfall and Oblivion to make 4 the worst and Melee the best

wew lad

>all future official Smash installments are just going to be benign growths of Brawl
>all future Smash mod projects/Smash-inspired fighters are just going to be benign growths of Melee
>just want a new Smash game that pushes it forward; maybe a 5th special move, grab-teching, veterans get refreshed, whatever

They are all good but can still bust out 64 at any time with bros for a great night. Never leaves the console unless its Mario Kart time.

brawl had modding and was the craziest shit, burning like a mother fucking rocket at the end with project M until that update with the stupid customes and ninja turtles which is when i stopped caring.

it was a fun ride anyways.

Even when taking a videogame so seriously is dumb, he has a point. Melee is a fucking beauty by mistake. If only a proper game with the same mechanics was made with good support and balance

Melee. It was such a tremendous leap in quality. Graphics, music, everything. The game was brimming with content.
I also prefer the semi realistic art style to the more cartoonish look of the brawl and 4.
My little mind was blown when I saw it in Nintendo power and noticed you could actually see the stitching in Mario's Jeans.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U

that roster, son. it's gorgeous

Snake, Bomberman and Shantae would complete it

Project M

Daggerfall doesn't make sense as Melee because it has procedurally generated content and Melee content is character tailored
Daggerfall also doesn't fit 64 because of how massive and unrefined the content was

SSBB could be Oblivion, but Skyrim fits better because they were the peak of popularity for each franchise

>Melee is a fucking beauty by mistake.
Melee was their attempt to have the Gamecube come out with a bang and represent the best of their body of work so far. You don't just accidentally make a great game. They put a lot of work into it and it shows.

Roster: Smash 4 with PM at close second
Gameplay: Melee
Fun: Smash 4 and PM
Singleplayer: PM
Biggest leap in quality: Melee

I think Melee peaked at competitive and Smash 4 did everything else.

AKA Melee wins

>lack of momentum transfer between running and jumping.
Well you play megaman so that should be fine by you

Smash 4 has too much filler adverts while cutting too many actual allstars

PM's roster is by far the best

I like melee simply because it feels faster and more agile.

It also has my favorite music of the series and the amount of polish is incredible.

I "main" Mega Man because if I'm not going to play a smash game for the gameplay, I'll play it for the fanservice.

>cutting too many actual allstars
Like who?
>Wolf
>Ice climbers
>Not C Listers

When you grew up

The problem with Smash 4 is the stages aren't as good as the rest of the series.

I agree, however besides Rosalina, Dark Pit and fucking Lucina Smash 4 has Ryu, Cloud and the best Mewtwo in the series.

PM has Snake, Wold and ICs and literally the best alts in any fighting game ever made.

I'd say it's pretty arguable.

It was just a joke about megaman games not having jump momentum

Stages don't matter, only characters matter

>and the best Mewtwo in the series.

That's PM

Really? Seems about the same ratio to me, counting 3ds and wiiu as separate of course.
You got good stages like gamer and town and city and shitheaps like orbital gate.
Just like how melee had good stages like fountain and awful stages like icicle mountain. And brawl had yoshis island and hanenbow

Melee is the best in terms of gameplay. Not even a tourneyfag but weight and feel of it makes it really fun to play. Things like floaty jumps and losing your momentum from running and jumping in the new games feels like trash.

>momentum transfer between running and jumping

Because [generic anime swordsman] and [generic waifu bait] are much better then a NES icon and one of Nintendos most popular villians

Isnt mewtwo only okay in the latest version?
He's actually really, really good in 4 now

I meant visually wise.

If we go for movesets then holy shit PM wins by a mile, Lucario, Mewtwo, Lucas, everyone is fun as hell.

Project M is Melee butthurt the game.

PM has actual balance, so mewtwo is just as good as anyone else

1.1.6 is pretty balanced. There's obvious tiers but the gaps are pretty small

i'm glad we can all agree on this

No, it's still broken af. The balance issues just get mitigated by 2 stock matches and rage

>Melee bias due to competitivefags
>Smash 4 that high with literally NO single player content
>Brawl was the best in every single aspect but competitive

Why do we deal with competitivefags still.

I like Ganondorf and Falcon because I can actually use shield cancels with them. I've never been able to utilize the speed of shield canceling with a fast character like Shiek. My brain just can't go that fast. I used to wreck my m8s so hard with Ganondorf. We would do 3v1s and I still beat them.

Ok. Who's the clear #1 character in the game? Who's the worst?

>implying wolf wasn't fanservice furrybait
Now they sucker in the furfags with pokemon.

>maybe a 5th special move
how?

back-b?

Melee is fun as fuck casually though

I can't speak for everyone but I played Brawl when I was a teenager as a casual

It wasn't that fun

The fact that SSB4 consumed Brawl's playerbase should show you how bad Brawl was. The fact that Melee still has a strong playebase after 15 years should show you how good it was. 64 and SSB4 are inbetween, position arguable.

Sm4sh has a better graphics style and better gameplay for non-meleefags. But that aside, it felt they were trying to advertise their games more than anything else. Almost every new stage is from a new Wii U/3Ds game. This applies for characters as well. There's lot of variated Nintendo characters from various franchises. Yet there's a shit-ton of anime swordmen that few people care about.

There's also a lack of new modes. Where the fuck is the story mode? Randomly beating hordes/giant/metal of random characters is not that fun. The Mario Party mode I can't even remember the name is shit. Characters customization is kinda cool but it's more a gimmick than anything else. The only thing I truly liked from those modes is Master Core, because of how different he is.

Also overpriced DLC, divided stages between consoles and WHY THE FUCK IS TIME STILL THE DEAULT MODE? HOLY SHIT I HAVE PLAYED LOT'S OF SMASH WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE FOR FUN AND I'VE NEVER MET A GODAMN PERSON WHO'S PREFER PLAYING A TIME MATCH. WHY THE FUCK THE ONLY WAY TO PLAY STOCK MATCHES WITH STRANGERS IS 1X1 FOR GLORY. HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT'S THE FOURTH INSTALLMENT ALREADY NOBODY LIKES SHITTY TIMED MATCHES

there's that drop because of the expectations,
it's been 9 years from melee to brawl.

64 is fun to go back to just for the simplicity of the gameplay. Combos are super easy and the sound effects make the hits feel solid.
The Japanese version of 64 has awful sound effects.

...

I used to think Brawl Minus was the most fun, but when its devs kept prioritizing "silly fun" over balance and competitive elements, Minus got stale. Maybe they'll redeem themselves with their final update, but I doubt it.

At this point, I prefer SSB4 > Brawl Minus (custom) > Project M > Melee > 64

>Who's the clear #1 character in the game?
Sheik

>Who's the worst?
Ganon or Charizard

son of a bitch

Speaking of sound effects, the dbz sfx pack for smash 4 is a godsend. I recommend it

kys my dood

Is this 1.1.6 you're talking about?

nice meme

ITT: Someone who hates dealing 666 Damage

Fucking this, but Sup Forums will deny it for some weird reason

I don't keep up with the bi-weekly patches the game has to receive in order to seem "balanced," but Sheik and Diddy are still overwhelming top 8s

fuk

Never. It's a shit series worshipped by overly competitive autists who have terrible taste in games.

You can all kiss the whitest, palest part of my ass.

I'd just rather have moves that are actually useful, instead of meme moves that aren't viable at all.

Stop feeding this childish shit.

That's just straight up false though.

Except it isn't. Not even 2 stock matches can hide 4's balance issues

>Completely viable outside of one move that is considered a signature of the mod
>lack of viable moves

I mean, I wouldn't exactly call 1 or 2 at the past 4 majors exactly dominance.

It was a generalization.

Minus' poor treatment of 'Dorf IS my main problem with it, though. Weighing down his Neutral B with that silly OHKO is stupid, when he could have something cool and useful instead.

Project M handled 'Dorf correctly.

you are literally the only brawl fan I've ever seen.

I didnt think they existed even.

Aside from story and boss rush mode the game was shit

Smash 4 with Namco Bandai's involvement shows the series is all uphill from here. Sakurai shouldn't have to bitterly kill himself for his ungrateful fans anymore.

That doesn't mean Minus is focusing on silly over comp just because they wont change one popular move

competitive wise Melee,
general marketwise Sm4sh

Half Diddy/Sheik the other half DLC characters

Fox, zss, Rosa, pikachu, megaman, toon link, falcon and sonic are dlc?
Is it bad that the dlc characters are good?

The OHKO isn't popular, (as in, "everyone likes it") though. It's one of the first things people associate with Minus, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. Out of all the new stuff in Minus that actually deserves recognition, that silly move -- which took so little effort to make, in comparison to completely new moves like Bowser's grapples -- is the "signature move" of the whole game... What a joke.

>playing memelee netplay friendlies
>dude I'm playing is okay at best
>has a sole strategy consisting of dash dance camping
>literally wont approach ever, runs to the other side of the stage after every exchange
>refuses to approach even with laser spam
>fun level reaches zero, stop giving a fuck and don't DI anything or tech at all
>win pretty much every game, but lose 2 since shooting lasers is fucking boring and SDs from trying to do/doing cool combos

why do people like to do this shit? it literally removes everything enjoyable about the experience

Some people enjoy playing patiently. Not everyone is the same as you, user.

>We'll never have a Smash game with 64's sounds and "SUPER SMASH BROTHERS", Melee's Gameplay and Modes, a story mode ala Brawls' SSE, and 4's extensive roster and custom moves

Melee is one of the best games ever made when do you think it peaked?

>playing patiently

I bet this is what every faggot says to themselves

>Removing Corrina
Well if we're doing that, then we might as well remove Rosalina along the way.

>One instance makes a character viable

k

I just wanted a fucking Airship stage. How did we never get one? Fuck.

fuck

>character is clearly able to win matches
>nope gotta win multiple times
Not him, but it seems you're moving the goal posts here.

>hating a game for 2% of it's fanbase

melee or brawl.
