Been itching to play some good Pokemon. How is pic related? I loved Sky. Or should I just play one of the more traditional games.

I loved it
Not as good as Sky, but almost as good
It was my first mystery dungeon and it's been pretty brutal but I'm getting the hang of it. I don't really see the point of not taking the super high level mons all the time in missions though
>I don't really see the point of not taking the super high level mons all the time in missions though
They're a crutch for bads
I just finished it, actually.
Probably one of the best games released in 2015, actually. Addicting gameplay, 200 hours plus worth of content, surprisingly dark and engaging story.
Are you stuck with story mon for most of it? Or is there actual team building?
you can only have a party of 3 this time around
you CAN go without story mon for normal explorations, but your moves wont be as powerful since you wont be using them, and it'll hurt in the long run
It's arguably better than Sky. And I fucking love Sky.
Fucking fantastic, story isn't as good as Sky but to me it felt like the best Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game to play.
Its better than Sky. At the very least, its mechanically WAY ahead of sky. Its interesting though since the game was changed to make it hard to level. Instead, the way to get through dungeons is to properly utilize your items to get through tricky situations. You'll find yourself fighting level 50 Pokemon really early on when you're in your early teens, if even that. Its challenging and rewarding.
That said, you might find the beginning of the game to be somewhat slow and dull. It takes a while for the story to get going.
>or should I just play one of the more traditional games
Nah. Those games miss the point. The best part of Pokemon is the Pokemon themselves.
Its pretty good, its just different in the method of getting pokemon for your teams, which at this point I don't see how it'll work any other way than the connection orbs if they keep PMD going after this. Those who played the past games and wanted to do true 100% already know what kind of hell they had to go through just to recruit every pokemon. There's no way to reasonably do it the old way. Its also difficult in just the right way imo.
Pic is best team.
Gameplay-wise I would say it's a lot better than Sky. The new recruitment system was a bit polarizing but I really liked it. It's also improved a lot of small stuff, like fixing ranged attacks and teammate AI so that having a third guy in a dungeon actually helps you, unlike Sky where it kind of held you back
Story isn't as strong as Sky in my opinion, but it's still excellent and has some great moments and characters
Soundtrack is even better than Sky
>not Fennekin and Riolu
No
>Using generic furshit
kek
Not as good as sky, but very close
The game is really difficult in a fun way. Have fun at reverse mountain
>Not oshowatt and pikachu
>go into room with stairs
>pokemon uses helping hand on a sleeping pokemon
>it wakes up and is damage boosted
>shoots me with a hyper beam all the way across the room
>die 5 times over
I just didn't like it. Too much emphasis on items, moves were all nerfed, and the game itself feels like a crawl for a while.
>mfw SMD Hyper Beam
>Some pokemon makes it sunny
>lilligant activates her ability to do 2 moves at once
>Quiver dance
What's the best team and why is it Totodile and Fennekin?
>polywrath river
>squirtle and charmander
>bump into a heliolisk in the middle of a tunnel
>razorwind
>Pokemon uses peck
>Slowly tearing through your reviver seeds
>Then starts taking apples
It's great and solid but I personally don't like some of the directions they took the gameplay namely in structure and it's the worst written PMD game.
If you wanna play a mainline game, the last noteworthy one was BW2 which was pretty great. XY is mediocre other than improvements to connectivity and going full autism with getting ideal stats on Pokemon, and ORAS is just alright when it should've been great and could've been with a few more months in the oven. If you want a new mainline title I'd wait to give SM a try when they come out.
I actually hate how they made it so evolving doesn't upgrade your stats like it normally does when pokemon evolve.
Makes evolving seem almost useless.
If you're bored of the main pokemon games, SMD is refreshing.
>The new recruitment system was a bit polarizing but I really liked it.
Aside from not being able to recruit duplicates, it's better than the system before
>beat the shit out of a pokemon and there's a 0.02% chance that it might want to be your friend
amazing
Oshawott and Fennekin, their lines compliment each other very well in every way possible.
>Worst written
>Those fucking twists and climax
>Implying R/B Recuse Team's story is better
This nigga.
idk I played through Sky a few times but I couldn't get into Super.
I don't even know what it is really. Something about it all being 3D makes it strange for me to play.
>not playing as squirtle
>not naming yourself speedwagon
>not having your own squritle squad
It's better that way since it sucks to have to evolve your pokemon if you want them to be useful, even though it rips away all personality they had
>Lullaby
>any multi-hit move
>Berry Power period
shit for some of the bullshit they pull doing broken ass shit and being immune to status effects felt so good
EVERYBODY GETS TRUANT
YOU GET TRUANT
HE GETS TRUANT
I GET TRUANT
I heard they take away your scarf later in the game, please tell me it's a lie
...
>Any PMD game
>Walk into room
>Perish Song
The pacing is poor in general, most characters were handled poorly due to 90% of those prior to the halfway point being totally dropped afterwards with zero relevance to the main story and those after the point who have relevance not really getting enough time spent with them or development to make the player really care about them, and pretty much all the writing falls apart after the big twist which is a great twist, if telegraphed way too much right as it's about to happen, but it's the only good one. I also found the climax silly as fuck but I'm just really jaded to big spectacle shit.
I guess it's still better than RT's nearly non-existent story, though.
>those plot twists after twist mountain
I swear they never stopped
Post YFW
>mfw the entire game from this point up until after the credits
The fucking espurr red herring and your partner being the "main character" the whole time was even better.
The game's story was so enjoyable
I've never played a MD game but I love me some rougelikes
What games in the series should I play?
I remember downloading a demo for one of the 3ds MD games and the pokemon started spewing memes so I deleted it.
sky
>pokemon started spewing memes
What the fuck were you playing user? Gates may be the worst of the series but this didn't happen.
It had a demo on the eshop. The pokemon at the counter thing where you get missions started hurling memes at me so I noped out.
>Go toward the stairs
>Entire team gets taken down by a hyper beam from off screen
It's one thing to get knocked out but it's another to lose because something on the other side of the room to hit you without you being able to stop it
>Entei and Raikou treat you like absolute shit
>Suicune could literally just care less if you died right in front of him
>turns out they already knew what the shit was going on and work their ass off to keep the light gate open for you so your soul can return to your body
t-thanks
also
>when Dark Matter says "THANK YOU..." before fading into nonexistence
Explorers of Sky or Super Mystery Dungeon. Go with Super if you don't like the idea of being able to level your way through dungeons you're having trouble with and want a generally more challenging experience. Go with Explorers of Sky if you'd prefer to not have a really slow beginning that handholds you for a bit too long.
And if you're asking about Mystery Dungeon in general, you might also try Shiren the Wanderer 5 which comes out VERY soon.
Swanna says in one bit of early game dialogue "don't call me maybe" or some shit, least I recall people trying to make a shitstorm over that.
Are there any legit ROMS out there for SMD?
What about the older games?
I might be in the minority but I like sprites over the shitty 3D models that they use nowadays
Were they any good?
Sky is an older game. It and Rescue Team use sprites.
