Putting aside the original 2D Fallout games, is Fallout 3 the best 3D game in the series?

I'm wondering if I should start playing the series with 3 or 4, and I've seen people shit a lot on 4 while I've heard very good things about 3.

I enjoyed New Vegas, more than any Bethesda game actually.

I do however wish the faction quests were as atmospheric as skyrim's "guild" quests. Helping the boomers is not nearly as satisfying as helping the thieves/dark brotherhood.

if you don't really care too much about immersion and a deep story, and want a game with a world just to explore, then go fallout 3. The capital wasteland has more mysterious, dead vibe. Most of the locations have little backstory, or anything really- I was constantly asking myself, "why is this here?" You're gonna have a blast discovering stuff.

If you want the opposite, then go NV. The Mojave is alive, everything has a purpose, the game's story and factions are very well done. I thought the DLC story was incredible.

Fallout 3 DLC is shit except for Point Lookout. All really short and lame. Pitt was good story wise, but thats really it.

New Vegas DLC is great story wise but meh gameplay. Old World Blues is amazing. I thought Lonesome road was solid, but way too short.

Fallout 3 gets a lot of shit, but still a solid game. New Vegas was rushed, but well made.

If you're on PC, get both immediately. Mods make these game absolutely incredible.

You can pick up both will full DLC for what, 20 each? Go for it.

To be fair, while the argument of 'it's a good game but not a good X game' is valid in some respects, Fallout 4 actually feels like a Fallout game and better yet had new gameplay features and mechanics that drove home the central point; crafting, settlements, and so on reinforce the central point of being in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
