It paved the way for MGSV. The only good GAME in the series.

hideo kojima is a genius is what went right

MGS3 has plenty of gameplay.

3 is the only one I haven't played. GBC mgs is pretty good though I'll admit.

>the WTF stuff
>graphics are fuckin mint for a PS2 game
>tanker chapter
>the boss fights

Tight, fast-paced game design with an idiosyncratic story. Substance also has a fuckload of content.

One of my favorites.

The tanker mission.

Only part of MGS I actually liked.

I don't understand the people that say this series has bad gameplay? MGS2's gameplay is fast and slick as fuck, and that was only the second game in the series. In fact, I prefer it's gameplay to everything that came after.

They all do except for 1

All of this

i like how MGSV was so shit that it made people prefer older games. no other studio gets this much cucked people always buy&play the newest titles

Not much

Its marketing campaign.

Nostalgiafags and wannabe academics going on about muh intertextuality

>Substance also has a fuckload of content.
lol?

VR missions/Snake stories/Skateboarding game/all the dogtag shit etc.

People prefer older games from lots of still running franchises. The old MGS games are quality user

>3 is the only one I haven't played
why tho, it's the best one

Every fuckin thing lad. All of it.

Hayter finally did a good job as snake and it was his only good performance in the series, i still don't like the game though, raiden is great too.

Please. The story is one of the best in the medium and it only gets more relevant as time passes. It's ahead of its time and I don't get why people can't admit that.

>This is what kojimadrones actually believe

wehere is the thread theme, OP? For fuck's sakes.
youtube.com/watch?v=1m4tYUfYCj4

>triggered

Yup

Has it seriously almost been 3 years?

Fucking Solidus was a hero

youtube.com/watch?v=eKl6WjfDqYA

He was actually a huge cunt.

He murdered Jack's parents and then used him as a child soldier. Those are not the deeds of a hero.

No.
They're the deeds of a God.

>Substance also has a fuckload of content.
THIS. Substance is the best game in the series.

-best story by far
-best gameplay because the game is built around the shell very well and AI is the best in the series
-most challenging MGS game
-good boss fights
-rediculous technology for its time and even today
-BTFOing big boss fags even a decade and a half later
-no retarded ass menu simulator from 3
-no easy mode weapon purchases or poor story of 4
-no unfinished game like V with unnecessary waiting for everything
-has nothing to do with the garbage that is peace walker

Basically, it's a VERY good sequel to 1 ( second best in the series)

>-best story by far
>-best gameplay
>-good boss fights
>-no unfinished game
wew lad

Am I missing much by having played Sons Of Liberty instead of Substance?

It paved the way for a good character transformation.

good god Raiden was UNBEARABLE in 2

Substance just has a load of extra content. The extra content is really badass and some of the hardest shit in the series.

Also skateboarding.

this was the last post before metal gear generals died, a fitting end for the cancerous Quiet spam in those threads

He's right though.

Nothing.

A decade passed and the wounds closed.

I think i'm going to make some more /mgg/ threads because of how much you disliked them.
You are that virgin who spent months talking about Quiet and Venom, right?

They included the full game with a funny looking coaster months before it came out.

It's so weird it ends on a huge cliffhanger though. I wonder what happened after Ocelot gets possessed by Liquid and steals Metal Gear Ray on the Tanker. It's too bad the game stopped there.

>The story is one of the best in the medium

except for the entire Arsenal Gear section.

They made a big mistake having the AI giving the speech at the end of the game have the same voice/pic as the AI who went full retard.

MGS2 really had a great story from start to finish.

...

Everything. Wish games as good as this were still made.

I wish Kojima would have more weird shit like the Arsenal Gear section and the AI going crazy. It took the game from a 9/10 to a 10/10 easily for me.

But I guess since he already perfected doing really weird stuff in this game it would seem kind of like a retread right?

Did nothing wrong.

it's not the same, is has that skull superimposed

>It's so weird it ends on a huge cliffhanger though.

I am so glad MGS4 resolves all the loose threads that MGS2 created

>AI Roy
not listening.

>I wish Kojima would have more weird shit like the Arsenal Gear section and the AI going crazy
I would not mind that as long as they don't try to force some message/theme AFTER the game goes bonkers, like what they tried to do in 2.

It still had Roy's pic/voice.

played in the hd collection and I still think it's amazing

I've only played the first one. Why do people like the gameplay in 2 so much? Thought the first one wasn't anything special in that regard.

Oh it's fine that it didn't work for you.

On another note however I'd like to reiterate how nice it was that all the thematics came together in the end almost perfectly. It's the best Kojima has ever done in communicating a clear message.

It's too bad Kojima lost whatever made MGS2 such a perfect game to experience.

Massive replayability, not including the substance version. I was able to beat this game in under 4 hours. Dog tag collecting to 100% on every difficulty is still my favorite thing. 2 is the best in the series in terms of environment and game play. It still holds up and is so damn smooth.

MGS1's core game design is pretty great; the issue is that MGS1 doesn't really dedicate enough time to sneaking for it to flesh itself out and make its case. MGS2 is very stealth-centric, and it does so in a way that's fluid and fast-paced. It isn't bogged down by the excess that started to creep in with MGS3, and the level design is more thoughtful.

What I never understood is that Raiden is supposed to be a rookie who only experienced missions in VR yet at the same time he used to be a child soldier what the fuck

>thematics

When I played MGS2, I didn't notice any themes. Then again I could not get myself absorbed into MGS2 like I did with MGS1 due to:
*bad main character
*horrid level design
*so-so gameplay made worse by the bad level design

>MGS1's core game design is pretty great
MGS1's core gameplay is loose as fuck.

>the issue is that MGS1 doesn't really dedicate enough time to sneaking for it to flesh itself out and make its case
It's a tactical espionage action game. Stealth wasn't supposed to be the main focus.

HE WAS TRYING TO FORGET BRO DO YOU EVEN TRAUMA/PTSD

>When I played MGS2, I didn't notice any themes.
Then you're overwhelmingly unobservant. MGS2 isn't exactly subtle.
>bad main character
>bad level design
Elaborate.

2 is pretty much a enhanced version of 1 with new story elements. Mgs1 suffers from being a ps1 game, not to any fault of its own though.

MGS1 is a mess that doesn't know what it wants to be. The stealth is shallow and the action is poor. "Tactical espionage action" is an inadequate title; Kojima's ambition was clearly to make a moviegame.

why did people chimp out over having a character get replaced by another character that plays exactly like him

Everything.

I already said that it is fine that it didn't work for you. You sound strangely bitter and entitled in with regards to MGS2.

For me however I greatly enjoyed the experience.

>Stealth wasn't supposed to be the main focus.
I'm aware. What's your point? I'm merely saying that MGS1's gameplay could seem lackluster because it doesn't have room to really shine until you play the VR missions.
I'm not sure what "loose as fuck" means. I've never had an issue with the way it controls.

>Elaborate.
For bad character, I would complain but it gets dismissed with some variant of "muh Snake" so fuck that.

As for bad level design, it felt like a chore going through each strut and the game forces you to backtrack a lot. it got to the point where I went "fuck stealth" and went full Rambo.

because the personalty of the new character was complete shit. It would be like playing a Giant robot game and going from Domon Kahsu to Shinji Ikari.

I don't think people liked Raiden's personality and the Tanker section was so exciting that people wanted to see what Snake would do from that point on.

I honestly don't care for MGS1 at all. I played through it on the PS2 collection and was confused as fuck as to what the hype was about. MGS2 is better in every single way.

>It would be like playing a Giant robot game and going from Domon Kahsu to Shinji Ikari.
If I were playing a giant robo game I'd hope neither of these faggots would be the main character.

>because the personalty of the new character was complete shit. It would be like playing a Giant robot game and going from Domon Kahsu to Shinji Ikari.
alright but if the robot was exactly the same then is it really that big of a deal

the tanker still would have been good if you played as raiden and the big shell still would have been a tedious mess if you played as snake

Because MGS2 wasn't out when MGS1 hit the scene.

>I would complain but
Cool argument.
>it felt like a chore
I never had this feeling. There is significant backtracking, but the game changes things up frequently enough that exploring the Big Shell was always compelling to me. And because the level design is so claustrophobic, merely entering an area from a different angle changes how you tackle sneaking through. My only real gripe is that the swimming section felt pointless. It's very brief, and I understand why it was there, but I think it was unnecessary. I'd have rather had another room to sneak through with Emma.

>not listening.
Of course you aren't, it's text.

same difference, it's still AI Roy's pic on a wall of text so fuck that noise.

Reminder

Shitposting with an image is still shitposting, baby girl.

>I can't refute something so it's shitposting
To be expected of Sup Forums

yea, typical kneejerk recation of a MGS2 fan

It's not the crazy stuff from the arsenal gear section, it's an explanation from the Patriots just before the end of the game.

Nothing about my post mirrored the lazy strawman bait suggested in that image. In fact, whereas that image's depiction of MGS2's fans emphasizes the story, my post doesn't even reference the story at all.

but it happened AFTER the crazy stuff in Arsenal Gear.

So I skipped that entire dialogue in game because they had Roy talking so I assumed it was more of:
youtube.com/watch?v=ul8j9I90ueM

>but their designs and boss fights are easily the best
BEEEEEEEES

>story
>bosses
>solidus
>gameplay

Yes. The extra missions in Substance is the peak of classic style gameplay in the series. They get VERY challenging.

People still praise it now and I don't think it's good.

I watched the whole gameplay of MGS 2 on youtube because pcsx2 is a pile of shit :)

The stealth

psst...no one cares

>be me 17 years old, 2007
>been playing through mgs2 all summer
>go to party at girl in schools house because parents are away, about 20 people there (not big ,just right)
>everyones tanned as fuck, its the summer at the end of high school so everyone is emotional and happy
>drink and trampoline all night with girls in their underwear
>take girl i've been off and on with all year up to hosts little sisters bedroom
>get amazing bj and have sex
>fall asleep in tiny bed and wake up about 9am
>everyone has breakfast rolls and chats about the night before
>walk home with girl from night before
>sit on sofa with her and finish mgs2
>she says it looks cool and keeps asking to play

And we're still together nine years later, thats what went right bro's

Do you beat her yet

pssst...nothi personel_________

Is 3 available on psn (ps4 or ps3) does anyone know ?

>tfw its the only one i havent played

HD version is

>no one mentions the absolutely incredible OST

it's the best music in any metal gear game ever. I'm not talking about just the main themes, but the themes for each part of Big Shell, that jazzy, drum n bass infiltration music is fucking ridiculous, just so good

It's all on youtube, those ambiant tracks are god tier.

Harry Gregson-Williams really did a fantastic job on 2 and 3. You listen to these and it's amazing how well it gives the mental image of sneaking in a marine facility or ship.

He did the same on 3 with the jungle setting. It's perfect.

You guys have restored my faith in this thread.

>Harry Gregson-Williams really did a fantastic job on 2 and 3.

yeah this dude makes some really impressive stuff. Might just be my ignorance but it's almost like he invented a new kind of music (obviously drawing from well established styles), I'd call it infiltration music or something like that.

I need to replay some other infiltration games, but as far as I recall most didn't have such great, well fitting music in them. Splinter Cell Chaos Thoery had a stellar OST that was a little in that electro vein, Hitman has some memorable tracks but in a completely different style, and also because so much of what you hear comes from the world around you.

MGS 2 and 3 are more self contained for sure, which I think is why that custom made music works so well too.

>Stealth based game
>No control of the camera
>Literally have to play with radar on or you get caught by a guard you couldn't see

The story was good but the gameplay was fucking awful.
