This is kind of a shot in the dark, but do you know how to beat the second boss? The little green things he shoots do shitloads of damage, but if I try to jump over them I end up entangled in his tentacles and take damage anyway. Also, the boss just creeps forward until he takes up the entire area, which obviously kills me since I have nowhere safe to go.

It's hard to describe exactly, you can tell if you've played them both. In Super you start out feeling average strength and gradually get more powerful as you move on. The combat is more fluid. In the original you feel weak and stranded, you're just trying to survive and get by for the first half of the game. By the end of the original you feel about as powerful as the start of Super. It has a weird balance between running from enemies being viable to needing to grind enemies to get your missiles etc back. Even with high health you can die in seconds if you're not as careful. It's way more atmospheric and the upgrades are more things like being able to shoot at a reasonable range.

Go left, try out your missiles. You'll get lost quickly if you leave a load of unifinished paths at once.
If you're past the NES, to get a reroll, you have to go down to the previous console and finish a new game

Behold, for I have uncovered the powers of low G Man
Namely, the power to jump really high (seriously, he jumps like screen and a half in the air) erasing every enemy and projectile from the screen.
Also the power to press turbo A to make him jump really low all the time, so he looks like a little girl strolling through a field, makes it way more enjoyable.
