The source engine still uses DX9

>The source engine still uses DX9.

What the fuck is wrong with this company? They used to make great games and now they sell hats. Is there really no drive from the core Valve to keep making games?

>What the fuck is wrong with this company? They used to make great games and now they sell hats. Is there really no drive from the core Valve to keep making games?

Well they are privately owned so yea there's no investors telling them to do shit they do what they want

Because they still make tons of money and have no reason to upgrade you fucking dolt.

Start protesting in the streets for people to stop buying Valve shit if it hurts your bum so goddamn much.

It's a fucking modified quake engine. They're moving away from DX9 with their new engine, which only one game uses because they don't develop shit.

Don't give me that "they are a business" shit. The company was founded by game developers. What the fuck are those people doing all day?

It's good so their games run on almost all pcs

Counting money

>tfw you can run portal 2 on radeon hd2400
Thanks a lot

I do find it weird that they seemingly have no interest in making games anymore. By now, any release wouldn't be gobbled up, but along the years, they could've made a lot of stuff on the side, with really little effort, that would've sold a lot.
And they had a passion for video games at some point. Maybe none of those people are left? It's really strange.

What business shit? I said there's no stockholders telling them what to do because they are privately owned.

Meaning gabe does whatever the fuck he wants.

Though if you must know gabe is counting money while his employees fuck around making cosmetics. This is what happens when you structure the workplace with shit like "you can move your desk on wheels to whatever project you feel like doing:

Do you realize that dota 2 uses a new source engine branch and have 4k support right?

>Not using Vulkan
Are you stupid?

>hl3 comes out
>co-op
>cosmetics out the ass
>loot canisters
>buy crowbars to open them for $5 each

no thank you

>have 4k support right?
so does half-life 1

/thread
Valve is rolling in dough, it makes no sense for them to take risks and make new games when they can just profit tons off about like dota and csgo

are you retarded op, developing a new engine takes time; even if they are taking their time. It's being made.

What if gabe is being used as a puppet and doesn't really control shit at valve anymore with the old guard dead?

>co-op
>player 2 plays as Chell with a portal gun

> Using Vulkan
Stopped reading right here buddy
holy kek, you guys are bunch of braindead kids i shit you not, as a recent bestseller steam game's developer i can atleast tell you that. You talk shit you don't know anything about. Vulkan for god sake, it's just for show, it's broken crap

>its shit because I said so. Trust me I sold 20 million copies of my indie game on greenlight
K

It's obvious that they would rather spend their time trying to make money from virtual items rather than innovating and making a new IP.

>as a recent bestseller steam game's developer
>it's just for show, it's broken crap
Found the "gamedev" with shitty low-level programming and 3D math skills.

>my game has been on early access for 2 years now

I'll give you a hint.
The writer of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 had to write fucking Dota 2 puns for FOUR YEARS.

Are those puns good though?

What the fuck is this thread even about.

Dota 2 has been using Source 2 for over a year now and it is not held back by DX9.

Post anikis.

>Make relatively small profit from pumping out a videogame.
>Make the same relatively small profit from pumping out a digital hat, or new steam mechanic.

I think it's pretty obvious why Valve don't give a fuck anymore.

Does it matter?

yes

There's no way this is gonna be sustainable. I mean even giants like sony and ms need to make and fund new ips

They vary from iconic to throwaway.

The dialogue in Dota 2 is charming enough to give the game life and make the characters feel animated beyond being a 3d avatar in a competitive game.

whether you think the effort is worth it depends on your opinion of Dota 2

You can just look up valve employee reviews to get an idea of what's going on

How isn't it sustainable?

They mostly have the market cornered on PC library software sales and library collections. They probably make more money from videogame trading cards for games that aren't even theres.

Speaking from a purely financial view Valve are probably more financially secure than every other publisher out there and they don't even have to do anything other than continue support for steam.

Fads like Pokemon GO will come and go (forgive me for that it was unintentional) but people will always be wanting to put their games on steam, buy games from steam as well as buy DLC and digital hats for their favourite games.

The only thing valve has to do is ensue a steady stream of trading cards and dota 2 items and they'd be probably still have the same market dominance in 10 years time.

>(forgive me for that it was unintentional)
It's more fun to put this stuff in spoilers

Oh no one person said bad things on the internet that confirms it Valve is a shithole doomed company!

Gabe newell is not a game developer

You need to look at the Vulkan implementation for Doom 2016, my man. Just released. AMD cards are seeing 15 to 30 percent increase in frames on 1080p Ultra. I don't know how many generations back the update will be implemented, but there are reports of the 2xx series seeing nice performance boosts.

M8 it was a bitter employee who didn't fit in

Still valve is doing something right since they profit and grow but you can't deny they prefer the status quo with small experiments on the side

Overall, they are the least worse marketplace overall for gaming. They maintain that and they're fine.

He did programming for Half-Life though.`

all the ones who wanted to make games left to go make more games

the 280x is getting 30 extra frames from what I saw.

a company founded by microsoft employees is most definitely a business.

Are you implying that them being game developers should exempt them from running a business probably you fucking tard?

>get a real hr team

you can tell this is written by a woman

They lost the founders mentality.

fortune.com/2016/07/09/founders-mentality-bain/

>Hierarchical
Valve specialises in having no strict hierarchy.

>Don't test
That's all Valve do. They don't make stuff, they just play test what they have for 40 years.

Rocket League uses DX9 only, no one has complained

Did read his job title? It was all in the context of a software engineer. Valve's software is fucking dated compared compared to what else is available now in 2016.

>valve
>don't test
literally the company that dumbs down even the simplest shit if some retarded normie go confused in testing

Nice reading comprehension you fucking retard.

Game testing isn't what he's talking about. He's talking about testing software before it rolls out. Steam itself is a collection of software.

ex-valve employee detected

Source 2 has Vulkan support

...

Exactly. They have no reason to upgrade to a newer DX on Source 1 when the new engine is coming. Although by the time it's out, it probably will be out of date too...

Source 2 is out, but for niw it is almost fully inhouse and the only editor avaiable is Dota2 Workshop Tools

>coming
Dota has been using it for months now.

>12 years-old engine uses 12 years-old technology

ok
