A 20-30 million dollar movie earned less than half a million on its opening weekend.
It's not Spirits Within big scale wise, but proportionally, yea, it is.
>The Kingsglaive Final Fantasy film opened on 44 screens in Japan Saturday at #10 on Japan's weekly box office chart. The film sold 22,818 tickets for a total of 35,516,460 yen (about US$345,507) in two days.
Who could have thought SE would make the same mistake twice?
Elijah Hernandez
Does the movie have in game spoilers?
Charles Robinson
>Who could have thought SE would make the same mistake twice?
Considering they've been fucking up for years, pretty much everyone. How is there even still hype for XV and KH3?
Wyatt Jones
Good.
Jordan Howard
>A 20-30 million dollar movie
i am sure that cgi like this is more expensive. also marketing.
Jayden Hall
they were making a movie?
Ayden Morris
Oh god, my liver
Dylan Parker
No, think of it as a side quest. They don't even mention some of the main characters of the game.
Samuel Reed
Tales of berseria preorders are also almost matching up with ffxv preorders in japan
What went wrong fatlus bros?
Henry Foster
How much did the cgi Captain Harlock movie open at?
Jaxson Sanders
>yfw Final Fantasy kills square, the same IP that gave them fame.
How poetic.
Eli Moore
>FFXV is set to bomb and bankrupt SE
I didn't believe I'd see the day. Praise be our Lord and fuckboi.
Colton White
>20-30 million dollar It's distributed by Sony's low budget branch that specializes on sub-10 million dollar projects.
Liam Powell
>Tales of berseria preorders are also almost matching up with ffxv preorders in japan Sauce?
Christopher Adams
This happened back in the 90's too retard. FF is the franchise that keeps them on life support.
Kayden Russell
who are they going to partner up with this time?
Lucas Cox
>20-30 million dollar sauce?
Gavin Adams
Is it any good? still don't know whether to watch it or not, keep hearing mixed things
Angel Wilson
it's shit, but there are some cool scenes, same as the Saint Seiya CGI movie
The best and only good CGI movie Japan has ever made is stand by me doraemon.
Xavier Price
>KH3
Doesn't Disney get a cut of those profits? SE doesn't earn enough profits from KH games if that's the case.
Carter Morgan
I couldn't be less interested in FFXV's gameworld. It's far too attuned to reality. The only reason anyone's looking forward to it is because it's the first non-MMO, non-sequel FF in like a decade, not because it looks interesting.
Chase Thompson
How did it even get marketed? Christ, I know people that have been waiting for the game since 2006 and even they had no idea the movie was a thing.
Brody Davis
>FF4 and FF7 >square at it's biggest it ever will be
All this shit they're doing for XV will kill them. Everyone feels lukewarm about the game
Dominic Green
mostly E3 i think
Nolan Brown
>being surprised that a movie played in less than 50 theaters in a single country didn't make much money This is nowhere as big of a fuck up as Spirits Within.
Logan Gray
The characters in FFXV look so goddamn boring and pretentious. Without a doubt the average movie goer wouldn't want to see that shit.
Aaron Martinez
I wonder what will happen if FFXV bombs hard.
Since they do everything to keep DQ irrelevant on west.
Julian Lopez
his ass
Owen Barnes
Theaters and moviegoing are very small in Japan. It'll do much better when released on DVD
Brayden Butler
Not yet...
Joshua Reyes
SO IS THE MOVIE FUCKING GOOD OR NOT
Jacob Stewart
It wasn't marketed. Just a few weeks ago they weren't planning to release it in theaters at all. >ign.com/articles/2016/03/31/final-fantasy-15-movie-kingsglaive-announced >Kingslaive will be released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in 2016, before Final Fantasy XV, and will be available for streaming or download worldwide. It will not be in theaters.
Austin Howard
It's basically Versus XIII in movie form apparently.
Josiah Phillips
It's excellent and infinitely better than AC or TSW.
Aiden Campbell
>All this shit they're doing for XV will kill them. If literally everything else they release this and next year bombed as well, maybe. Even then they make most of their money from mobile games and MMOs anyway.
>pretentious
Thomas Robinson
Thanks
I'm sure it's great so I'm pretty hype to see it in English
Levi Green
Except most people are pretty excited. About the game, not a film they can't see anyway. FF is a double edged sword for SE, they don't know what to do with it. It's too big of a name to kill, but they don't know how to make a modern FF game. They can't really go back to something like Bravery Default, because FF IP is too big for something small like this. On the other hand their Eidos division is doing great. Almost everything not FF related is doing great, especially if it's developed outside of Japan.
Aaron Rogers
44 screens is not a very wide release.
Oliver Collins
well fuck who are they going to merge with to not go bankrupt this time?
maybe atlus?
Aiden Howard
20-30 million doesn't seem like a large amount of money for a big budget movie in this day and age.
Also doesn't china save all movies nowadays?
Austin Adams
The problem is that SE do everything to keep FF afloat.
DQ is the main cashcow on japan, but since when they care about western release? Also they cut the budget from Bravely second. KH is just alive because disney.
Xavier Gonzalez
atlus is owned by Sega
Justin Collins
You're right. There's always pachinko after all.
Ryder Cook
ur mom's ass will make a black hole LOL
Leo Hill
>releasing the movie before the game
I know its a prequel and all but come the fuck on. Release the fucking game first before you start milking that cow.
Evan Reyes
Considering pretty much no characters from VersusXIII made it into the movie, I doubt it.
Carter Brooks
Hi FFXV-kun
But your movie just tanked. And soon your game.
3m sales tops.
Joseph Collins
To be fair that isn't hard.
>but they don't know how to make a modern FF game I wouldn't say they don't know how, they're just experimenting more and more with each game because they can always fall back on nostalgia cashgrabs like Theatrhythm, World of FF, Dissidia or RK if a main game doesn't sell well.
Camden Foster
They will keep trying because it's a huge IP. Killing something like this is unwise. Of course you can argue someone in SE is trying to make a point by holding on to FF license, but I doubt it. Even if FFXIII was considered a failure by fans it was a financial success. Same shit will happen with FFXV. FFXIV is doing fine. FFVII remake made everyone cream their pants, especially people who are younger than the game.
Adrian Gutierrez
>I couldn't be less interested in FFXV's gameworld. It's far too attuned to reality.
oh, like vii?
Jackson Gonzalez
FF7 Remake is going to save them from having 1+ billion yearly sales? Because that's how huge SE is nowadays.
Anthony Reyes
It's marketing so people aka casuals who wouldn't be interested otherwise will want to buy the game. Also, it shows a lack of confidence in their game though, because it's like they are trying to make money before incase the game bombs.
Liam Lopez
See . They clearly weren't trying to make much money here.
Brody Roberts
To be fair, Squeenix don't just make games, they have mangos and LNs.
Jonathan Gonzalez
>FFVII remake made everyone cream their pants, especially people who are younger than the game.
source: your ass
personally i creamed my pants and am older than the game.
Luke Hall
FF7 was definitely where it all started going wrong, but compared to XV it was still well within the realm of fantasy
Dylan Williams
They have Nii-sama
Luke Ortiz
>tfw you know people who were involved in making the film I feel bad for them, truly.
Ryder Thomas
and it doesn't go against my point in any way. You were saying?
Dylan Barnes
It's the movie nobody asked for. Just give us the game. Fuck off with your Expanded Universe trash until it actually comes out and manages to be good.
Luke Bennett
>It's marketing so people aka casuals who wouldn't be interested otherwise will want to buy the game. Not him but if they weren't interested in the first place then why would they want to sit and watch a movie about it?
Nathaniel Morris
they clearly just can't decide how to market the two products. either it's a long tail supplement to the value of the game, or it's a promotional tool or something. who knows.
Kevin Long
Sorry you're going to have to watch the anime before that and don't forget to play the mobile game :^)
Asher Moore
most people really like being tricked huh. most people like spending $60 more on yet another overhyped pile.
Charles Sanchez
Atlus.
Brayden Cooper
44 out of 3500 screens in japan was not even supposed to be released in theater's either it only exsisted 4 months ago anyone who wants to see the movie already owns the deluxe edition
Logan Thomas
I LIKED ADVENT CHILDREN AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO STOP ME
Cooper Perry
Final Fantasy 15 was a total mistake, through and through. This is getting ridiculous.
>Using a shitty engine they wasted millions on, even though the rest of the studio ditched it and is working with UE4 >In development for like a decade >Millions wasted >Multiple demos with wasted content and changes >Wasted millions on a movie that bombed >Need it to sell GTA and CoD numbers to break even
It's dead on arrival. Modern fianl fantasy was a fucking mistake. They should've stuck to making quint, "botique" RPGs in the vein of FF9 instead of blowing money on braindead pseudo-action bullshit like this and XIII.
Jose Cruz
>A 20-30 million dollar movie We don't know the budget
>44 screens >22,818 tickets This doesn't sound bad for only 44 theaters. This movie was originally announced during the uncovered event as a direct to dvd anyhow.
Evan Nguyen
>compared to XV it was still well within the realm of fantasy
i don't agree that it's any less fantastical than vii.
yes it does. i don't think the hype for the vii remake comes from people who principally didn't play it when it came out.
Luke Morgan
>44 screens >22,818 tickets in two days This is 518 tickets per screen in two days.
Thomas Miller
me too
Eli Price
TSW is still the best rated vidya-related movie, funnily enough. I guess surpassing it is harder than it might seem.
Alexander Young
I liked it as well. And I think FFXIII would've been better as a movie.
Angel James
>make movie with incredible CGI >Release it in less than 50 theatres in a single country
For what purpose?
Robert Nguyen
this is so intensely fucking gay
Alexander Carter
yeah that's the dumbest strategy
we could sell the movie to people who like the game, or we could sell the game to people who got hyped for it based on a 44 theatre release that sold less tickets than a peter frampton concert.
also everyone knows that when the game comes after the movie it's shit, except for like NES batman
Isaac Bailey
I actually think releasing the movie first is a good thing because doing that right after the game came out would make it look like they made the movie just to ride off the hype of the game's release.
You've never actually seen XV-kun's posts before have you?
Elijah Hernandez
You experiment with modest sized budget games using their IPs or making new ones. Not with their bread and butter.
XV is a fuck up. Even Nomura was all like "Nigga, what the fuck?" when they said they wanted to make it a mainline game, and Versus is his baby.
Should have just kept is small and made it a "japanese boy band is teleported to the world of FF and have to fight their way back home/save the world" and made the agni project their first current gen FF.
Brody Garcia
It was planned to just be a home release and not theater. Theater is just to make extra money I guess.
Wyatt Jones
>no source
Robert Peterson
This was a straight to dvd release untill fans asked for it to head for cinema's sqaure know's what there doing
Ryder Gomez
THERE ARE DOZENS OF US WILLING TO SEE THE MOVIE! DOZENS, I TELL YOU!
Kayden Cruz
Man, Square better knock it out of the park with XV or they're gonna be in serious trouble. I stopped giving a shit years ago but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious to see how this all plays out.
Jonathan Perez
>retarded animu girl >IXfag >has no idea what he's talking about It's like a trifecta of cancer.
Anthony Lopez
>yes it does. i don't think the hype for the vii remake comes from people who principally didn't play it when it came out. and I never said it does
Noah Foster
I am scared for SE now. I don't want FF to die.
>yfw XV is magically good but no sales.
Carter Edwards
yes, you did.
Colton Smith
>Absolutely zero advertising. >Flops This is what happens when you take marketing advice from Nintendo.
Ayden Morales
Spirits Within > Advent Children
fight me
Hudson Morgan
can you quote the part where I say it?
Christian Rodriguez
Nomura said no such thing. In fact, he said there was talk to turn it into a mainline title even back in 2008.
Ian Nguyen
>not even 44 theaters with multiple screenings, but rather ONLY 44 screens >niche movie >#10 in charts for an extremely limited showing So far it looks like they got a strong start. How is this bombing? Also, $30 per movie for LE is going to cover the costs even if there were 0 theater showings.
Andrew Green
mario bros, the wizard, mortal kombat, street fighter, advent children, the king of kong, and resident evil were all better than the spirits within
and i hated resident evil
Jackson Campbell
>>FFVII remake made everyone cream their pants, especially people who are younger than the game.
Isaac Diaz
while not being nintendo.
Nintendo IP's are so strong they can do without as much
Christian Allen
Nigga, it was supposed to be a straight to video movie. What advertising would you expect?
Jackson Myers
>10m to make profit back.
That's a little to much... greedy project, I know about fuckups and engine/console change, but they are going a little too far with that. Game isn't even out and they are trying to milk hard as they can.
He got fired, and now he works on sony.
Michael Rivera
They do look pretentious. When you present yourself with an air of greater importance, without the substance to back it up.
