Really? MGS1 ends pretty hopefully despite what could happen to Snake. MGS2 ends in a weird spot where you don't know what to believe, but at least Raiden and Snake seemingly make it out. MGS4 ends with Snake not committing suicide, Big Boss finally passing on, Meryl getting married, Otacon and Sunny seemingly okay, and everything somewhat worked out.

MGS3 ends with you completing your mission which required the death of a motherly/mentor figure, feeling betrayed by your country, EVA making off with the item, and the final moments having Snake saluting Boss' grave with tears in his eyes. How is that the least depressing of the games? Perhaps the least depressing during the main part, but within the ending it's easily the saddest.

Needs Max Payne on that list too.

i think the general insanity of E.Y.E cpuld be seen as psychotic depression, seeing as the game's about guilt, also put yume nikki and .flow up there, also the lain psx game and the evangelion game

I talked about MGS4. It would be super depressing if the ending didn't try to wrap everything up in an awkward, sickly sweet manner with shit like CQC hugs and Meryl getting married. The game overall was rather sad, but other than Snake's suffering it wasn't that bad.

FFVII has a very depressive tone but it ends with the good guys saving the world, and Mother 3 is all but depressive for god's sake, yeah your mother dies but in a ridiculous scene and you didn't even get time to give a shit about the character, and the ending may seem depressing but even the fucking credits literally tell you everyone survived and had a happy life.

Also, WHERE THE HELL IS THE VOID, PATHOLOGIC AND STALKER? Slavs are the true kings of depression, probably because their own lives are shit.

Depends on how you look at it. Bloodborne is dark and has people going crazy 24/7, but Dark Souls is about people losing hope and going hollow. Losing hope and drive is the entire basis of the curse. Add to it the fact that you explore dead societies that have either been abandoned or taken over by the curse, leaving behind just remains of once amazing cities. Whereas something like Yharnam is crazed but is certainly not abandoned or hopeless.

Bloodborne is about exploring the madness and an ongoing plague. Dark Souls is about exploring what remains after everything is dead and long gone. I'd say the latter is much more depressing.

Limbo is a pretty overrated game. I just got a big pretentious vibe from it, I also got the same from Braid, but at least that game had interesting puzzles, now in Limbo you just walk to the right, solve some extremely easy stuff and watch the creepy huge spider coming at you.

I honestly feel that whenever I finish a good game, I get depressed. Especially long RPGs
