What does Sup Forums think of Quake 2? I remember 5+ years ago it was consistently brought up here as the best game in the series. Today it seems like the one which is regarded as the worst of all.
What are your honest opinions on the game?

i always liked it

Loved it, IMO one of the best FPSes of the time. The argument being commonly passed around here nowadays is that it was dumbed down for consoles which is utterly ridiculous as the two console ports it got were done long after the fact, were done by an external contractor and not id, were significantly reduced (PSX's levels were split into bite-sized chunks, N64 had no soundtrack and like 2 fps animations), and in the case of the N64 got an entirely new campaign instead of the regular one which is particularly odd as this would've been THE console to aim for if the original had been really made for a console from the ground up.
it's different than Quake 1.
less circlestrafing, more cover use and hit&run attacks. A lot more ranged enemies. Levels design is generally less prone to mechanics abuse, like rocketjumping. Also it had objectives to do rather than "reach level exit, killing all in way".
One great improvment was that you could keep powerups and use them when needed. Makron was a cakewalk if you had them all hoarded.
As for expansions, Ground Zero was pretty good, while Reckoning was trash.
It's pretty underrated and paved the way for better games like half life with the varied objectives and map transitions
solid game
As someone who's played it recently for the first time (a few months ago) I was kind of disappointed by it and didn't bother finishing it.
Graphically I didn't like it as much as Quake 1's pixelated textures, and it just looked really muddy and unappealing.
The weapons themselves didn't manage to impress me because they didn't have a muzzle flash, something that even Wolf 3D had, I mean come on. Railgun was kinda cool though.
Yo how do I get that pixelated look for Quake 2?
>software rendering
goddamn.
IT WONT GO FULLSCREEN
REEEEEEE
>I remember 5+ years ago it was consistently brought up here as the best game in the series.
Quake 1 revisionism happened.
God I love this game, probably because it was the first M game I ever played. My dad came home with it one day and said we were going to play it together. This was the late 90s and I was 6 or so. He would walk around and aim and I would press Ctrl to shoot. We got really far, almost to the end of the game but before you go to space, and then our old IBM pc got the blue screen of death. The game still holds up really well today and is super fun. also
>that soundtrack
youtube.com
set texture filter to nearest or software rendering
it's opengl with q2pro
there is also a cel shading effect on models
>been a long time since I played quake live
>google it
>its on steam now
>you have to buy it
what the fuck
Software rendering is how you maintain the most possible detail in early 3d games.
i fucking love that pixelated 3D looks old games gave
It's more likely confirmation bias. Dude reads a few threads, finds some posts he agrees with, and through inference finds it to be consensus. Happens every day.
The reality is, Sup Forums is big as fuck and busy as fuck, and there are so many unique posters with so many varied opinions that there will never be a consensus. There'll just be posts you agree with or find intriguing.
Awful soundtrack that appeals to shitty metal fans.
>mfw they fucking ditched Trent Reznor for that shit
I thought it was the most amazing thing I'd ever experienced when I played it at the computer store in 1997. We only had an NES at home and it was literally generations more advanced than anything I was used to and that was without an accelerator.
It's exceedingly average.
Quake 1 is better in pretty much every way.
>It's more likely confirmation bias. Dude reads a few threads, finds some posts he agrees with, and through inference finds it to be consensus. Happens every day.
Not to me. Played Quake 1 and was happily surprised.
Quake 2 got released in a limbo state. All major technical advacements were already done by Quake and all the storytelling advancements will happen in just a year with Half-Life. Quake 2 just doesn't hit any remarkability.
Yeah, it just hurts because I had to play Quake 2 on software rendering (on dial-up, no less) for the first year and a half or so. I didn't even get to experience colored lights (which, lol, was quake 2's big innovation at the time) until I saved up my pennies and bought this bad boy. I had to get the PCI version because lmao no AGP on my mobo.
Playing some Quake 1 right now, bitches. Great game.
>he thinks White Zombie is metal
i want 00's kids to go.
Noice
That's exactly what I got except it was the PCI version. The biggest single upgrade I've ever experienced for only 150 bucks.
Quake 2 is basically Vietnam in space. Of course it'll have some rock metal soundtrack unstead of grunts and drones. No marine would listen to that gay shit.
This. Up until I experienced it in 1998, all I had was N64 tier games. Even in software mode, Quake 2 was a level above everything else by an order of magnitude. I did play Quake 1 on N64 prior to seeing it, too. It still blew me away.
>quake 1
>better than 2
you're a fucking retard
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
KILL ME NOW
LET ME GO
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>Sonic Mayhem
>not metal
Who gives a fuck about White Zombie? He only did the theme which was forgettable anyway
It's not, Quake 2 used to be the best singleplayer on the quake series for me until i played the original one and could confirm how superior it is.
where is the evidence
Confirmed for not having played the original.
>quake 2
>better than 1
More like Sup Forums hipsterism happened
>Quake 2 is more popular than 1
>therefore 1 is better than 2
Pretty sure 1 is more popular than 2 at this point.
Play it for yourself, first three maps are enough to show the high level design quality that the original game has and which is totally nissing on 2.
Too many hitscan enemies
Get a load of this nigger.
How do I get the cel shading?
Sounds like the classic id software argument. You could literally talking about doom right now.
you're wrong btw
I fucking adored it back in the day, but going back now it really havent held up too well. Fucking Half-Life came out a year later, and really hammers in how forgettable Q2 is in comparison...
Only on Sup Forums
it's the 2nd best in the series, actually
the order goes quake > quake II > quake 3 > quake 4
ie they got consecutively worse with each installment
quake 3 was the last one Id still call good
it was shit
>no Quake 2 type shotgun
arguably worse than quake 3
holy fuck if you're going to have bad opinions make up your own bad opinions instead of being this autistic contrarian hivemind
I design levels myself, i know what i am talking about.
Quake 2 level design is simplied, linear and pretty much bland, the only good thing about it is the theme but the design itself if plain boring.
more like everywhere
no one gives a shit about quake 2. people who want singleplayer play quake 1, people who want multiplayer play quake 3
Reload rate on Super Shotgun makes it unsatisfying to use. Normal Shotgun however is pretty sweet. It's the right kind of fast.
>I design levels myself, i know what i am talking about.
wew lad. i was excited about Tread back in 98. How old were you then?
where is the evidence
q2pro
they are all good but yeah i'd dock some points for quake 3 being essentially multiplayer only
the levels aren't any more linear than q1 it's just that they are all connected rather than being seperate maps in fact there are a bunch of points where you need to collect and item or trigger something that will happen in a seperate map then backtrack
What i did with the Q2 super shot was crouch-upshot stroggs and launch them into death: lava, high cliffs, water. etc Love that punch, no other games does it so.
>if you don't think like me you have no personality
Well I got Q2Pro but no cel shading. Also no music for some reason
>the levels aren't any more linear than q1 it's just that they are all connected rather than being seperate maps in fact there are a bunch of points where you need to collect and item or trigger something that will happen in a seperate map then backtrack
This is a big thing that a lot of people forget. The hub level thing was pretty fun and innovative at the time. They more or less dropped it by the last half of the game, but it was still neat at the time. Lots of fun going back through a level and walking past the all the dead bodies from before.
There is a mod which enables colored lighting for the software renderer. It looks fucking dope.
Q2 was the major online game of the late 90s
If you had dsl or cable you dominated because ur ping was a big deal, not many had cable back then
Played so many hours of q2 lithium
How do I use this? I have GOG's Quake 2
under effects m8
yeah it was done better in others game like unreal a year later though
Download the release from here:
github.com
Put the res_soft.dll in the Quake II root folder, replacing the original res_soft.dll. I would recommend making a backup of the original.
It's bizarre how many games in 2016 got their start as Quake 1 and Quake 2 mods.
best movement
best ctf
worse at everything else when compared to 1 and 3.
and before in hexen
cpma
>Q2 was the major online game of the late 90s
Until HL launched
Uh, no way. Quake 2 had way better netcode, more mods, and a much bigger community. All Half Life had was ported Quake mods.
HL only had mods. The base MP was shit.
strife and tekwar too!
>hero shooters
youtube.com
Did generations ever get released? I knew a bunch of the mod devs back in the nineties, and I figured it died when they got a C&D for using id software assets.
>HL1DM
>shit
You get the fuck out before I gaussjump my dick into your ass.
...
HL1DM wasn't the fucking base game
>ported quake mod
Trash.
>Sierra
:( At least they are back, in the 90s they were so awesome so many of the shit I got came from them.
>counter strike
>a quake mod
Fucking what?
It's a ported quake mod. It was originally Action Quake 2.
get gud, scrub.
Quake 2 had some ridiculously fun mods. Action Quake 2 was one of the first online FPS that had realistic weapons, bleeding, bandaging, and location damage.
DM was part of the game. You could not not install it. And DM had same mechanics as the singleplayer portion.
action quake has nothing to do with counter strike
I know this also had quake2 but I would play quake1 and I think quake3 some on this did anyone else?
>idIOTS claiming Q2 had more influental online than HL
It was literally created by the guy who made Action Quake 2 and the guy who ran the AQ2 website.
Nevermind, I was thinking of Deathmatch Classic.
>kids who don't know that all of half life's multiplayer was just quake 2 mods with more lag and newer graffix
quake 2 is boring to play
>slower movement
>less fun weapons
>somehow worse enemies
It's a total slog unless you're braindead enough to find it entertaining
>relatively unique setting of quake 1 was turned into LOL ALIUMS for 2
shit game.
id suffered without romero. creatively dead
>maps are more interesting
>guns have more kick
>the expansion packs are gold
yep, pure shit
UT99 > HL1 = Q2 > Halo
BITTERMAN
wrong
wrong
also wrong
wow.
you may as well have posted nothing.
Forgot Halo > Quake 3
>tfw nobody will ever list Giants: Citizen Kabuto as a god-tier classic shooter
i feel bad that i missed playing it as a kid
I think its rad. I have really fond memories of watching my dad play when I was a kid.
my best shooter memories are of beating my dad's ass down in opposing force, quickscoping him with the sniper
loved playing quake 2 with bots though
>no lava
I wanted to play this game (the GOG version) but it would just crash to desktop immediately. Should I give it another try?
I liked the first Quake but it didn't really blew my mind.
Quake 2 soundtrack is so fucking godlike.
>Halo > Quake 3
Like i said before, you don't know jack shit about level design, retarded baby.
>Giants: Citizen Kabuto as a god-tier classic shooter
Giants has god tier writing and humor, but the gameplay always was pretty shit desu.
I haven't played Quake. But I played Quake 2 when I was a kid, and I never managed to finish it.
Few months ago I installed the game, had fun until I went into mines.
Game got so exhausting so hard.
Made me drop it.
single player isn't as good as quake1
multiplayer isn't as good as quake3
it's kind of the bastard child of the series. (Quake4 doesn't exist)
a lot of the awesomeness is lost now, things that were impressive then just aren't anymore. Quake1's maps are far better imo, but quake2's maps are more structured and would probably seem much more "real" to many people
