I was the only one who was actually open about my love for pokemon and I was mocked and bullied for it. Pokemon is the quintessential "le 90s gamers" franchise. The concept is novel, the brand recognizable. It has an exciting gimmick that actually works and rewards you for being glued to your screen.
It will die off pretty quickly though if they don't massively update it. Right now there's only really collecting to it, who the fuck though not having an actual battle system was okay? Once you've collected the majority of Pokemon the appeal starts dwindling exponentially.
Nah it's really simple. Back then in your age group pokemon wasn't popular. Now in your age group it is. People will pretend to like anything if it makes them popular.
Simple, it's a trend and it's Pokemon. We can laugh at newest iterations of the games as much as we want but Pokemon is a global IP that pretty much everyone and their grandmas have heard about. So even though normies won't buy the games, they will download the game since it is easy for them to play and since it is such a big fad everyone wants to jump on that ship.

The battle system was too "complicated" for the masses to digest while doing everything else in their life. There too much time commitment in the current mainline games for people to give a shit. If they made a revamped battle system that wasn't just number versus number it would be more like, attack, defend, counter. That's it.
