In the original game one of the first notes about the Camera Obscura is a warning: The ability to directly fight a ghost is a double edged sword.
A person who doesn't use the camera would have some time before the barrier between the physical and spiritual world became weak enough for the ghost to affect them beyond making them uneasy/haunting them.
A person who does use the camera can see and drive a ghost off temporarily, but it also attracts ghosts to them and lets the ghost attack them physically as it would for the normal person at the end of a haunting.
