It's been established that fighting and getting stronger is how they grow up. Being with a trainer increases a Pokemon's chance at becoming stronger and evolving. It's not cockfighting either because they don't die, they just fight until they get exhausted

Pokemon was first released in the US in 1996 and was a massive success. As a game, TV show and series of toys, there is no fucking way this troll didn't at least watch the cartoon growing up.
