I Felt like booting ftl up again for the millionth time so I figured we might as well have a thread for space games. I dont know how they did it but I just keep coming back to this game. Ive played it so much without mods though so are there any mods that change the game up a good deal that you would recommend?

also I'm still thoroughly convinced that getting the dong ship by winning with the engi ship is impossible.

bump

not ready to give up quite yet, bump

I've never played a rogue-like in my life, but I'm really into scifi and RTS and turn based strategy, would I like this?

YES!

speaking of space games, I had a friend that played this religiously but I never saw anyone talk about it. is it actually any good?

there is even rts elements in it. You have to micro manage your crew when you are getting attacked. Aliens invadeing your shit and rooms having no co2 so you have to move your crew to other rooms, opening doors to kill co2 wich also kills fire etc.

its frustrating for many people because the game doesn't do anything to really stack things in your favor, but its also not like harder roguelikes that stack things against you for a large part of the journey, but it's got fantastic atmosphere somehow and a lot of content and different ways to go about things.I would 100 percent reccomend the game but dont take any events that involve your crew boarding or landing anywhere outside the ship (not attacking enemy crews I mean specifically events) unless you would be ok with them dying and you getting nothing.

ftl captain's edition is a decent mod.

It's alright, a RTS but battles are very slow paced. Nice game to chill with.

>co2

gonna check that out, do you need to download a mod manager for this game?

o2 *

Sorry, i got the brain for a 5 year old.

to add on to what everyone has said, it also sets up a very solid feeling of seclusion.

Captain's Edition is made up of many optional parts, so the Slipstream manager is very necessary + adding in any other quality of life mods you find

Captain's edition infinite is what I've recently been using to freshen up the game. Turns it from a 45 minute roguelike into full length 8 hour perfectionist playthroughs.

I'll check that out then. I've been playing purist all of this time since I had yet to get bored but I was starting to think it would be nice to have some kind of new content. is there a mod site for ftl or is it just on something like nexus?

I think you can find mods on the official ftl forums.

thanks, I'll take a look

FTL is the only game I've played where slapping content mods on didn't immediately create a better game. Every item and weapon has an important, unique role. It doesn't take all that long to encounter everything and learn what it does, which is important in a roguelike. All of the depth comes from the game mechanics giving just enough layers to make a really interesting experience with mixing and matching. Throwing in a ton of new stuff can make it feel cluttered and redundant.
I did warm up to mods after a while though because the pull to get more out of the game is so strong.

dont get me wrong, I've been playing the game for years actually literally picking it up now and then, but I've just been thinking that maybe I could get a new experience out of it.

I can sympathize with you guys. Got 200+ hours into the game before I even touched Captain's edition. It's all good.

just now hitting 217 hours on my profile and I played it before I bought it myself so I think I'm going to have at least one more normal run before I mod it. I just don't know what it is about this game but it feels so "full".

It's definitely a unique indie game, and it's a fun strategy title.

Roulette game

sometimes it feels like that, but the atmosphere and gameplay even flying straight into a space grave is worth it. it's far too long past to shill, I just dont mind games where losing is part of the fun.

well, it was only 24 posts but I'm happy that there is still some amount of video game discussion here.

oh also does anyone here know anything about that space station game where you have to control the astronauts seperately kind of like this? sounded interesting but I didn't know if it was comparable.

277 hours here. Still haven't needed to try any mods because the main game is so fucking good.

I still can't unlock the dong ship user, 217 hours and I just cant fucking do it. PLEASE SEND HELP

You mean federation cruiser? I do the quest for it every couple of runs basically.

I've only seen it once and I was severely under equipped that run and got fucked.

Dong ship is best ship

But seriously, engi isn't hard, mantis ship is hard, and slug

I keep getting fucked by the fifth sector.

What should I put points into first? Or should I wait until i get to a store and upgrade there? Are Drones worth the parts?

>mantis ship is hard
I must have been lucky as that was one of my first wins. slug is still tough though.
depends on the ship, usually drones aren't worth it, though if you have drone slots sometimes having utility drones equipped gives you access to certain events

Consider save-scumming until you unlock it
Feels crap but its good to just get it done and over with

Getting 2nd shield blip is usually first priority

>roguelike
reee etc

Upgrade shields. If you need weapons save up for them and buy them. If your'e good on weapons, upgrade defense. Don't buy systems until you need them. Basically don't buy anything you don't need.

Drones are good but you should never be buying drone parts (or missles). If you have drone control, you want a defense drone, don't bother buying anything else. However if you get another kind of drone for free, you should consider using it.

I really don't want it to come to that, so I'm thinking about playing other ships until I happen to get that event by chance more

No need to save scum. Just focus on becoming a better player. Try to go towards red events past sector 5 since that's when rebel stronghold appears.

Progressing farther into the game, it becomes about being able to get the enemy's shields down. They have 3 shields? You better be able to volley 4 shots. Once the shields are down the battle is won and you can kill the systems that let them hurt you.

so is it sector 5 and onwards or is it after 5

sector 5, 6, 7 only

Mantis ship with the 4 teleporter room is a smooth ride what are you talkin about, you make so much money salvaging undestroyed ships

gotcha, well I'm going to try an engi run then an any ship run going through those sectors of course
Does anyone else name the crew after your closes friends? I end up restarting when one dies in the first half

I've got this space game and I don't know what I should add next (if anything). Should I add more features to this space combat game, or should I start shilling full time?

I want features that give some form of clear coherence. as it stands all I see are pixels telling eachother to fuck off. maybe some base stuff and seperate fleet info?

I'm and I always name the starting crew after me + my friends, but leave the names on found crewmen.

Yeah. Unlike other roguelike where they just stack things in your favor, you actually learn and to a degree get better at this game each time. It's a lot like speed running a game with luck factors, you gotta wait for the run

>fleet info
Each player only controls one ship; there aren't any rts like features in this game.

only difference is I have a couple really close friends that don't fit in 3 crew ships so I rename the first 2 or so I get

except you can't attack anything within nebulas and you get riggedy recked by missiles

it looked like there was only 1 player desu senpai. then you definitely need some kind of point for them to defend , but please don't make it moba style. there was a game like that and it was shit, you just need some kind of base to defend your attackers against and maybe a way to establish forward bases. I don't know what your vision for this game is, but when its space related then anything that makes it "grand" is good.

literally just buy engine upgrades and a defense drone, you swim in dollars from salvage

>Warp Riders
You listen to The Sword, user?

>when you pull off a vulcan run

What other games are like FTL? With resource management, permadeath, random encounters, and shit. I was recommended Ironcast in one thread but that's game looks like Bejeweled.

that's dependent on rng

if your great plan to win is to reset 10 times until you get a perfect rng in order to succeed, that means the setup is't very good

>some kind of base to defend your attackers against and maybe a way to establish forward bases

Most of the map is empty, but when a ship is destroyed it breaks apart and the fragments stay around for the rest of the game.

>game drops double mkIII burst lasers in your lap

that has fucking nothing to do with what I suggested.

Is it supposed to look like this

what do you do with no weapons when you run into automated ships or lanius ships?

Defence Drone MK2 says it shoots lasers as well as missiles
Does this mean a missile could get through while the drone is recharging from shooting a laser bolt? Pretty crap considering that's exactly what you'd have it to counter.

Once ended up with the Chain Vulcan and the Glaive Beam together
Pure murder

that's exactly what it means. 2 defense drones are better than a single mk 2.

defence drone 1 is better overall imo

search roguelite on steam

Yes, dear God yes.

Word of warning: The sheer weapon and drone variety in the Captain's Edition severely balances against boarding party-reliant vessels like the Mantis ships. I don't think it's even possible to beat the game with them after you install it- you'll be hitting too many airless, automated drones with shield-piercing weapon fuckery to ever get the scrap necessary for endgame, and you won't have the weaponry yourself to compensate.

add some kind of upgrade system
weapons, armor, speed, etc

good to know

upgraded teleporter can bring guys back before they suffocate, and i always buy a gun to finish off drone ships

This is probably the worst part of CE. There's even some flavor text that taunts you with it.
"I am one of 5839 identical drones"
"This endless stream of drones won't stop unless the Rebels are beaten"

>drone has 10 power in engines for dodging

>They will never make a sequel, or another game.

This reminds me of DEFCON just by the looks of the projectiles

I cant win with the mantis ship its so fucking annoying.

>Ctrl F Starsector
>0 Results

Shame. Besides Terraria it is the indie game I've clocked the most hours in.

How?
Wiping crews is easy with Mantids, yields much higher scrap, and teleporter offers blue choices in tonnes of events
