It's more like it means the new team doesn't know what they are doing and are killing paper mario instead of using a proper experimental IP.

I found him to be the most memorable thing about the DS version, maybe because Yoshi was the guy you used to take him down.
I hope for when they inevitably re-make SM64 completely with new assets, they will include 64DS content as well.

You'd be surprised, some of Nintendo's re-makes started off as projects for new teams to help them test the waters for later projects. I don't think Nintendo will keep their employee count the size it is now when they need to ramp up for an all HD software future. Teams of 30 won't cut it pretty soon.
