Is FF7 actually a good game?
I'd really appreciate a straight answer, every time I've asked someone about it, they act appealed that I've never played it then go off about how amazing it is without actually telling me anything. Same thing happens when I ask about KH.
How's the gameplay? Are the bosses challenging? I have no idea and no one seems to want to talk about it.

It's alright. It's big claim to fame was being the first 3D FF, so like OoT it gets a lot of free and undeserved points. Both 6 and 8 are better, though 8 has weaker characters and setting in general. Probably worth your time if it looks like it's even remotely your thing and you've somehow managed to avoid spoilers, though.

It's your standard jrpg experience especially if you've played an ATB game you know what to expect. It all comes down to if you enjoy the characters or setting.

If you've never played a FF game then you really don't know what you're getting. If you have, then expect the same but worse, especially if you played 6 or 9 before. The story is kinda interesting though.

I'm sure he's already heard plenty of the broader reasons like "the story" or "Tifa's huge tits" but I feel like he's asking for specifics when in reality getting what he's asking for would ruin it.
Before playing Chrono trigger, I knew people liked its immersion factor, music, and plot, if I needed more info than that then Chrono Trigger wouldn't be the game for me.

And while this might seem like I'm suggesting he skips 7, I still think he should try the first disc at least. It's a vidya hall of fame member and the guy probably has at least some interest in JRPGs.

FF7 has aged like milk in several notable ways (mostly graphics) and even its best fans can acknowledge this, people like wanted the original game remastered for new hardware and possibly rebalanced, not the plot of FF7 applied to a non-RPG with an anorexic Cloud for our protagonist.
Why the fuck is it so much to ask that, while Square develops KH3 and FF15, they make the FF7 remake an actual fucking RPG for their long-time fans? It's not like Square fans would be short on "fresh" new content.

Also, you're right. FF7 has aged like milk, especially the battle system. It may have been a good idea to add more action in turn based, but ATB today it absolutely laughable, and easily one of the worst battle systems in JRPGS. The new gameplay, close to Crisis Core, is way more fitting. I'd be sad if Nomura does a cop out and goes back to the original battle system because it's clunky as fuck.
Doing a 1:1 remake would simply be eye candy with nostalgia goggles and it's one of the worst combos of modern vidya.

It's very, very standard RPG combat. Overall it's just good, that's about all. Nothing is overtly broken. My big problem is that it turned JRPGs retarded for over a decade.

The witchcraft and wizardry angle is overplayed sure but goddamn, FF7 was the progenitor of all modern JRPG stereotypes.
