Pokémon can spawn literally anywhere. You don't need to out yourself in harm's way to play, and all the Pokestops are populated public places.

This is a pain. Playing in my neighbourhood is mostly a waste of time so I have to bike into town where I can level up twice in a few hours and catch tonnes of free pokemons.
When I see somebody walk up to my lure I'll say "what team?" or "nothin but rats and birds, man." It's quick and depending on how they react I'll know right away if they feel like socializing or not.
It's not that I don't want to socialise I just don't think I'd have much to say and that I'd be a disappointment to whoever approached me. Anyways I figure wearing headphones all of the time makes it unlikely people will make the effort.
