Melee may have a higher skill ceiling, but I prefer a game where more than 3 characters are viable. Sm4sh's variety and balance works well enough that even a heavy can wreck S-tier autists if played right.

Brawl is best for casual play IMO. Sm4sh has some incredibly unbalanced items that make it not very fun to play with items on.

I personally can't stand vanilla brawl, the physics bother me and tripping activates my autism like nothing else in a smash game. I think I still prefer 4 as a casual match game because I just can't see it as a competitive game, due to how lacking I find it in terms of momentum and I guess "style variety"? But I'm probably just pretty biased since Project M is my favorite.

To be fair, Sm4sh is miles easier to get ahold of and start playing. It's simpler to get into due to people not abusing glitches to play plus a used copy doesn't cost $50+. Blame the Melee community for that though, those fucks killed the market for getting a copy so the only other way to play the game is to softmod a Wii, which isn't too hard but not many people will do that when they can play 4 on the Wii U or 3DS.
Sakurai is a huge fucking idiot though, hopefully the series gets a new Director in the next installment since Nintendo seems all in on advertising it as a fighting game even if he insists that it's a party game
