super shotgun is overrated

Better pacing.
Better levels.
Better music.
Better difficulty curve.
Better structure.

Super shotgun was a mistake. It wrecked the careful balance completely and made Doom 2 be a monster closet horde extravaganza instead of a well-paced shooter it was prior. The single fact that you could one-shot Pinkies without any repercussions with it really shows it was a bad idea.

It's mostly just the levels and that Doom 1 is split into episodes which I think 2 should have carried over.

No chaingunners.

The level design is massively superior in pretty much every way.

This is unrelated but i don't wanna make a new thread.
In what order should i play the Serious Sam series?
Should i start with Classic or with HD?

HD

Classic has some neat rooms that HD changed to worse but otherwise it doesn't really matter, HD versions are excellent remasters.

TFE -> TSE -> 3

but the sound it makes when you reload... so satisfying

The level design of Doom II is hot ass.
Too many levels devolve into you humping the wall trying to figure out where the hell you need to go.
And the enemy placement in most of the levels was bullshit. Tricks and Traps was a huge offender.

...

It's not.

Thanks anons.

Doom2 deathmatch is vastly superior. Nobody plays Doom2 deathmatch anymore, so Doom is better on account of having better levels.

Blame Sandy Peterson.
Is this Hexen wad for Doom?

Huh. It turns out most of the levels I hated are the ones made by him. That explains it.

>And the enemy placement in most of the levels was bullshit. Tricks and Traps was a huge offender.
Either I'm forgetting something or I'll just have to disagree. Fighting the Baron of Hell in the chainsaw hallway is elementary. The Cacodemon room was kinda stupid but not unreasonable given that you should have a rocket launcher. The room with the Barons and the Cyberdemon is pretty much a joke room as long as you just sit back and watch the infighting happen. By the time you have to actually fight, the Cyberdemon should be weakened and the Barons remaining should be very few in number if any at all, and as you can see there's an invincibility and supercharge right there.

The only thing about Tricks and Traps that I remember ticking me off was when you go to exit the level and the platforms fall. If you don't react quickly enough then you just fall in the lava and die. It got me the first time and occasionally after that if I forgot to think about it.

Based on the UI it looks like the Japanese Community Project.

Yes Hexen weapons in Doom wad.

Its not. Doom 2 is a straight upgrade to Doom 1

I know, I was actually disappointed in Doom 4 that it didn't reload after a single shot anymore after the upgrade, I love that noise in 2 and 4. But double tapping barons down in 4 shots was incredible.

Better level design.
Better music.
Better structure with the episodes and each one having it's own kinda atmosphere.
Each felt like a further and further decent into Hell instead of whatever Doom 2 was doing.
Less goofy gimmicks like Barrels of Fun.
No city levels.

Doom 1 was a bit better paced and i liked the little map things with the episodes but much much less memorable

there were a lot of generic corridors and square rooms that get repetitive and dull, and sometimes get a bit obtuse and confusing.

DooM 2 did well in making every level unique and fun to explore.

Final DooM was pretty excellent

Doom II's level design is super abstract and arcadey, random weird floating colored blocks and shit everywhere in the hell levels, and some people don't like that

Doom 1 had better level design and no archviles. I always enjoy Doom 2 until I get to the city levels then I quit. The random we stuck placement of enemies combined with super vertical levels just murder the pacing for me.

Random ass fuck*, I hate phones

These are good answers.

The only thing Doom 2 has going for it over Doom 1 is the vast collection of WADs
