Shady country keeps warring with another country. Shady country goes full Trump and puts up a great wall to keep outsiders away. It works for a while, but eventually it fucks up everything for everyone. Shady country gets wrecked, the ruling class is discredited and murdered, and the heir to the throne now has to do something about it without having any resources and support except for his bodyguards.

Also there's a phenomenon called the Plague of the Stars that's gradually making nights longer and threatens to engulf the world in permanent night. They also gotta deal with that.

Well as you may or may not know, FFXV was originally a spinoff called Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The original concept was based on the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos, which was shared by all (former) XIII titles, including FFXIII itself and what came to be known as Type-0(formerly Agito XIII).

Honestly the mythos is somewhat of a mess and extremely vague(although I suppose this was done on purpose to mimic ancient creation myths and give the directors some creative leeway). XIII, for example, pretty much ignored all the stuff about Etro and Bhunivelze until the sequels. In contrast, Versus XIII featured Etro heavily, and her influence seemed to be tied directly to Noctis, on both a personal level as well as his royal heritage.
Those aren't spoilers and those are fake too. It was made up shit from a faggot here who just mixed shit we already knew about with things he pulled out of his ass to try and look like a "legit leak bro". It was already debunked as fake months ago.

In the original concept trailer for the game in 2006, there were some flashes of text that vaguely outlined the story premise. The kingdom of Lucis, where Noctis comes from, is apparently the last region in the world that still abides by the "old ways" and retains control of a crystal. Other nations apparently sacrified, destroyed, or otherwise lost their crystals through unknown means and are referred to in this trailer as "heretics." Square at one point trademarked the name "Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII"

Originally, it seemed that the crystals themselves may have fulfilled a role similar to the fal'Cie from the FNC mythos, with the royal lineages of each kingdom acting as servants of the crystals, or l'Cie. In fact, as late as the E3 2013 rebranding trailer there was a brief mention of l'Cie as people being loyal to the Lucian Crown.
The nature of crystals, how/why the other kingdoms lost their crystals, and why Lucis seems to be more technologically advanced/modern despite being apparently more traditionalist was never explained, and to this day remains somewhat of a mystery.
XV is not longer part of FNC, and even then the only thing it used when it was FNC was the name Etro.
In the years since, various trailers, interviews, etc. haven't really shed that much more light on things. After the poor reception of XIII, it seems Square went to great lengths to remove and/or downplay any FNC references. Despite this, it seems to be more of a cosmetic or tonal change, as the basic plot structure/outline seems to be more-or-less intact. In particular, Nomura once said that the said that the basic story outline is just 1)Niflheim steals crystal and 2)Noctis and co. go on a roadtrip/adventure to get it back. The original "dark" and "Shakespearean" atmosphere also seems to have been tweaked, though to what degree remains a point of contention.
We now know that Lucis has a main "rival" of sorts(as opposed to being against the whole world as was implied in the original concept trailer) named Niflheim. We also know that the game starts with Niflheim conducting a sneak attack against Lucis under the guise of a peace treaty with them. Aside from this the details are a bit fuzzy. There's been vague mentions of a so-called "plague of the stars" that lengthens the night and threatens to destroy(or at least drastically change) the world. It's also been implied(or maybe explicitly mentioned? I'm not entirely sure) that Luna and the Lucian crystal/royal line are directly responsible for delaying or stopping this from happening. In that sense, it's like a lot of previous FFs in that the main conflict is as much the world's problem as it is the protagonist's(Noctis') and vice-versa. It remains unclear what Niflheim wants with the Lucian crystal and why it doesn't seem to care about, or is possibly even TRYING to bring the plague of the stars.

The setting is a mix or medieval fantasy and urban fantasy. You have the people from the modern city using classical swords and magic spells because it's part of their culture, despite being advanced to a modern state. And you have the medieval like kingdom using Magitek technology like they do in FF6 because they don't have access to the Crystals magic.

Because the official website confirms that Noctis and Prompto are 20, Ignis is 22, Gladio is 23. And it was confirmed that Luna is 24, that Cor is 42, that Cidney is 20, that Regis is around 50 and so on. None every other character we've seen is an adult too.
