ITT: Post highly overrated games
Pic not related?
"Overrated" now means "some people enjoying a game that has some issues and attempting to discuss it positively"?
It's very related.
Overrated to who? some weebs on a weeb imageboard?
most people who played it think it's an okay game that has some flaws
MGS3
It's worse than MGS1 and MGS2.
>overrated
Most people don't even know what it is. And those who do usually admit it has glaring flaws but is a decent and enjoyable game.
>Overrated to who? some weebs on a weeb imageboard?
yes. Nobody should think this game is anything above a 6.5.
>My opinion is law
Did you make a post in a thread complaining about the game, get no responses, and decide to make a thread instead?
If you dislike the game that's fair, but don't be an autist about it.
It's not an opinion. It's a ranking based on objective metrics.
Literally only Vita gen seems to rate it highly
Anyone that's actually played it, or the remaster, knows it's a mess
>Did you make a post in a thread complaining about the game, get no responses, and decide to make a thread instead
No. I just think it's overrated.
>I think it should be this, so no one can think otherwise
Hardly. It's commonly acknowledged that the combat is merely rudimentary on a good day and hardly anyone gave half a fuck about it until it came to PS4 over 3 years after its initial release. GR is a lot of things but it damn sure isn't overrated.
It's not overrated though
Most people agree that it has flaws especially through Vita limitations
You're retarded if you think that's overrated.
I think you mean games people like, despite having a lot of flaws.
No one thinks Gravity Rush is the GOTYAY.
So is the remastered worth buying or not
Nope, game is really solid and enjoyable.
Honestly, most of this thread is just bait and opinions. I personally think 90% of the 3DS library is shit and highly regarded by people with nostalgia issues and children.
For the price and silky smooth 60 FPS, if you have the money and want it, go ahead.
It's easy, the combat would've been shallow 10 years ago, the side challenges get old, but it's fun and full of charm. I don't regret buying it for $25
Vitagen disowned GR once it hit PS4.
If you're trophy whoring it's basically a free platy.
It comes with all the DLC. Not sure if the physical version is Amazon exclusive still.
Anyways, if price isn't an issue, you'll have fun despite the huge flaws.
Not trolling.
Well, okay, a little.
...
How can games so niche be overrated?
I played the Vita version but I'm sure one of the constants between versions is the outstanding artstyle and music. Aesthetically it's a lovely game. In terms of gameplay it's meh but even then you kinda want to root for it since the idea of free gravity control is at the very least a really good one, and the game actually doesn't entirely squander that potential so much as it could just use some refinement.
Great games nonetheless but I agree that they are put on slightly higher pedestals than they deserve, especially RE4.
Neither Donkey Kong nor Resident Evil are niche.
in tropical freeze's case, I have seen loads of people say that it's as good as DKC2, which is just a flat out fucking lie
Not as a series, but those specific games definitely are.
>RE4 Wii edition
>niche
RE4 is massively popular, so was the Wii, and Wii edition was widely considered to be the best version of the game for several years. No.
As for Tropical Freeze, considering the very successful comeback that was DKCR, the only thing niche about that game is that it's on a console with a small userbase.
hahaha seriously? Fucking cucks
Why?
GR2 being a PS4 exclusive did not go over well there. I'm still a hair salty myself. GR was half the reason I bought my Vita.
yeah, vitagen has always been shit. don't know how it managed to get even worse.
It was actually alright back in early 2013. Had next to no games but the general was chill as fuck. It's gotten exponentially more Sup Forums-lite over the years though.
*whom
Well, what'd you expect when it got more weeb games?
(You)
Well yeah, but thing is there was a time when Vitagen could've been considered good. Isn't that the case for the early days of generals all around, though? Rarely does something hit the ground running as shit. Nah, it makes its way there over time.
>Resident Evil 4
>Niche
Fuck sake does Sup Forums even know what words mean anymore?
its on sale right now, $18
This game is the most overhyped trash i have ever had the displeasure of playing.
Of course not.
you're right
it's better
lol
OoT
haha
Nah, that game earned its wings and then some. It and Super Mario 64 were trailblazers in 3D game design, and OoT at its core still holds up admirably for its age. It's not the greatest game of all time but it is a game that is more than worthy of respect.
...
false
You must have very dull tastes then.
This along with Uncharted.
No
Fuck off, retard.
Before I call you a faggot, why do you think so?
Yeah because people are constantly talking about gravity rush, are you joking OP? Overrated would be
because a lot of people talk about it and praise it but it doesn't really deserve it.
It's a sobering thought to realize that this game is almost 15 years old. And I disagree but I played it back when it was new. Shit's an atmospheric triumph, even if some of its gameplay elements like the combat haven't aged with grace.
Quantum break
Great argument bro
I bought a PS3 a couple years ago to catch up on the exclusives that I missed out on from being a Microshill.
They're just 7/10 games.
Finally, something that is actually overrated. TLoU is alright but it's no masterpiece.
it's just okay. there's occasionally some powerful atmosphere but combat and puzzle-solving, which the game focuses heavily on, are basic, and the overworld just isn't interesting enough to carry that.
what I said above applies pretty closely to this, too. game only gets particularly fun when you start backtracking for the artifacts
Thats 7 more points than your average xshit exclusive
You fuck off. Its a shit game with a shit story.
...
By 2016 standards, sure. By 1998 standards it was forward thinking. Yeah it's basic, but that's in part because modern games have built upon OoT's foundation.
OoT was in no way forward thinking.
This is what people mean when a game ages.
Did you even play this? This is a 10/10 platformer.
Its not bad but its not the second coming of Jesus like everyone says it is.
Its just an average 2D platformer on a console that has almost nothing but platformers.
this is objectively one of the best games ever created
with the wii collection, the only notable flaw (the tank controls) were basically fixed
Its open world design, trendsetting level design and actually decent Z-targeting system, all in a 3D space while such design was still its mainstream infancy, beg to differ.
I had a 3DS since day one and I agree with this
It's true that there are some great games like SMT4, DQ games, Rhythm Thief and some others games but most of the library are Nintendo and Capcom crash grab or shovelwares
Still better than Vita library sadly
>tfw the handhelds have the best libraries this gen
These are dark times we live in.
Atmosphere killed it for me, it doesn't even touch what R&D1 was able to do with inferior hardware. That and boring boss designs.
Perhaps I should try Echos again
I'd say Prime had more atmospheric diversity than the earlier games but to each their own. If you're more enamored with the earlier Metroid style then Echoes is a bit more consistently in that direction but the Dark World mechanic and its impact on pacing is make or break for people. Expect more backtracking than usual for the series but personally I'm rather fond of it myself. But I also like the Prime series across the board so your mileage may vary.
Gravity Rush 2 screens pulled from Neogaf.

FF7
>getting baited
And I don't really give a shit about 1998 standards. How a game "holds up" is entirely irrelevant to me. It's true that games don't strictly exist in a vacuum, and context can be important for seeing how to move forward with video games by observing the kinds of things that qualified as "innovative" at an earlier time, but when I play a video game, I play it for my own enjoyment. Even still, I can enjoy a whole host of older games that influenced others, games which are also terribly basic but make up for it by being concise, fun to control, or otherwise clever.
If anything, I feel that playing it in context (going from Zelda 1, to LttP, to OoT) would have much more severely highlighted issues with things that people laud - the open-ended world, in particular. But I didn't do that. OoT was the second Zelda game that I really sunk my teeth into, following Twilight Princess, so the empty open world and fairly linear story were not particularly jarring to me.
Well, the thing with OoT and its historical context is that devs didn't always know how to design a game in 3D. Making a 2D game and making a 3D game are two very different things, and much of the 5th gen saw devs basically figuring that shit out blind. OoT earns much of its praise because it was one of those games that really broke some ground in 3D game design. I can't recall the quote verbatim but there was a dev who asserted that anyone who made a 3D game and claimed they didn't borrow something from the N64 Marios and Zeldas were lying. That's the relevance of OoT - it's rudimentary now but it was a major force in the process of learning how to develop a 3D game. Refusing to acknowledge this, then turning around and calling the game overrated is disingeneous, it is widely acknowledged to be a cornerstone title in gaming for that reason.
When I call the game "overrated," I'm not talking about the people who say it had a powerful influence on future 3D games. I'm referring to the people who continue to call it a masterpiece, those who put it among the best games of all time, when this implies a direct comparison to other games before and after. So little about OoT "stands the test of time," as its thoroughly outclassed by games before and after it in a variety of ways, and so I don't feel it ought to continue receiving praise for any reason other than its legacy. I certainly understand that it was a lot of people's first experience with a surprisingly atmospheric game, and the idea of exploring that world (for what little exploration there is to be had) is exciting enough for people to play it, ignoring the dungeons.
Taking intentional influence from OoT nowadays would generally be a mistake. There are much better games you could build your ideas from that may have taken their inspiration from a game that also took its inspiration from OoT, and that's fair enough, but OoT, while occasionally brilliant in its own right, robbed of context, doesn't have much to convince me that it's terribly great. It's like Yoshi's Island, to me, where people hold it as the gold standard for a given genre when there are so many games that have handled that genre better or more interesting.
You start.
OoT, as overrated as it is, was revolutionary for the time. FF7 wasn't really, at least not in the same sense.
I agree that it's not much by today's standards, but did you actually play it when it was new? It was pretty impressive.
I suppose that's fair. I don't think OoT has been THAT thoroughly outclassed in design but games have indeed gone bigger and badder than it, and I don't think anyone sane will assert otherwise. Still, the foundation it laid for 3D action games do give it merit as one of the greatest games of all time. Even though games have done what OoT has done better, OoT pushed the envelope so those games could go on to do what they do. Regardless of whether or not people continue to suck the game's dick in this day and age for what it is is honestly their prerogative, but the game did earn its legacy for a reason. I get what you're saying but people being obnoxious about it still being a masterpiece doesn't really change its accomplishments in the grand scheme of things.
There is no way on earth that this piece of shit deserves anywhere near a score of 92
I'm not surprised. The original Odin Sphere was flawed but a lauded cult classic nonetheless. Leifthrasir retooled it and made it better AND made it not run like shit while still keeping the original style for purists. It's a remake done right, and the praise is about what I expected to see, maybe a hair higher.
Kat-chan is too cute.
I won't called it shit, but it's decent at best. The art is definitely not that appealing bth.
I have no doubt about that. Even though I don't really like OoT very much, I've played plenty of games before it, and I can appreciate some of the things they nailed, like powerful nighttime atmosphere and an escort mission that doesn't make me want to kill myself, as well as a control scheme that's not pants-on-head retarded. A lot of developers that weren't Nintendo clearly had a lot of trouble figuring out how to make characters control nicely in 3D at the time, although I wonder if the main reason for that is because the PlayStation initially lacked an analog stick.
I agree that tiresome praise doesn't influence the quality of a game, but that /is/ the point of this thread.
still waiting on that guy who says "undertale" just so he can piss off the weebs.
