Sup Forums, I need some help. I'm trying to get into Dragon Quest but I don't know what games are worth and which one I should start playing. I don't have a 3DS so the new ones are impossible to me.
There is a specific order to play? Are they related? Any chart would be welcome as well. Thanks in advance.

DQI-III are a trilogy, DQIV-VI are a loosely connected trilogy, the other games are standalone worlds but with lots of references.
As for play order, that depends. Can you stomach older games? If yes, you might want to play them in order because this way you can better appreciate the improvements and feel and get all the nods and nostalgia while progressing through. But do play the remakes of the versions, DQI and II you can play the SNES remake with fan translation the GBA version or the Android one. Android is probably the best version of DQII, tile cancer aside.
DQIII I recommend the SNES remake with fan translation.
DQIV is a controversial one because >muh accents, but I still believe the android version of the DQIV remake is the best one because party chat. The DS version lacks party chat.
DQV you can play the PS2 version if you're a graphic whore or the DS/android version if you want to play it on the go.
DQVI play either the DS version or the android version.
DQVII you can play the PSX version still, but brace yourself for the longest RPG you'll ever play.
DQVIII, play the PS2 version since 3DS isn't an option for you.
You can play DQIX on a regular DS or emulate, but you'll lose all the online functionalities that were a thing back when the game still had a server. It's mostly postgame stuff, so don't mind it.
Now if you want to just get into it, I'd recommend DQV, one of my fav games ever and one of the few cases where I could legit have feels for the self insert thanks to the plot.
DQIII and DQIV are also good points to get into the series. DQIII is pretty basic, build a party, go explore the world. DQIV is more plot based and you play through various chapters with different characters before getting together for the one final chapter.
Have fun and welcome to the series. Please no accent and localization cancer on this thread.
>the GBA version
Sorry, meant GBC version there.
I really enjoyed dragon quest dai.
Pop was the man.
...
It was neat, but I disliked how powerful every main character's plot armor was.
It very much depends on what type of experience you want. Super retro? Modern? Middle ground of the two?
Thanks a lot, user! This is the kind of help I needed. appreciated I think I will start with the first one since I don't mind the graphics. I heard really good things about DQ V, so I'm really tempted to play it first. Again, thanks a lot, user.
I watched the anime when I was 8 years old, I really liked Avan and the Crocodine.
Don't read the manga then, because those characters are treated like shit later on.
Stop recommending VIII as a good entry point, it really isn't. The only reason people say that are the greater focus on story and the fact that it's the first DQ game a lot of people played. Really it's probably the worst entry point for the series short of II.
Where did I recommend VIII as a good entrypoint?
Oh shit you actually didn't, that was III. My bad.
Sorry it's kinda become reflex for me at this point. Everyone seems to say "oh start with VIII" because nobody's played it for 12 years so they don't remember what it was like.
Here OP.
Wow I think something is literally wrong with me right now. I'm gonna go lie down.
Get well, user.
Dragon Quest VII was the first JRPG I ever played and it's what really got me into the genre. Not gonna say whether or not it's a great "intro part", but aside from a few parts it's an absolutely stellar game
Love these charts, thanks, user.
Sleep tight.
If you want to play for the story and characters go with DQ 4 or 5 first, doesn't really matter which one. If you want to play for the gameplay, start with 8.
