Most multiplayer games now have matchmaking instead of player hosted servers. Thus communities rarely form anymore.

MMOs too. Most of them solo your way up to max level, then hit the auto group and dungeon finder. Get matched up with a bunch of random people from different servers you'll never see again.

Also information in general is easier to find. Long ago you had to talk with people to learn about a game. Today, nearly every game on the planet has a wikia that details every single thing on a game.
