The only reason it's popular is because nintendo are fucking idiots... billions of people grew up watching pokemon, almost everyone from the age of 18-30 knows what the fuck is a pokemon, however most of these people didn't care enough or even knew about the pokemon games or wanted to buy a handheld for a pokemon game, so now they release a sreaming pile of shit that should be illegal to call a game on a platform that everyone has in their pocket with the pokemon name attached and everyone loses their shit... it's not good, it's a piece of shit and this critical acclaim could have been given to any product with pokemon attached on iOS and android. Imagine what would happen if they would release a Mario or Zelda game on iOS and android, nintendo is just too stupid to realize how popular their IP's are.

One might think that, but allow me to explain. What has made Pokemon GO popular isn't the mechanics of the game itself, as those are rather bare bones and not particularly good in any one aspect, but rather the social element that has come up around the game.

Talking with people who have also played the app, organizing attacks on gyms with other members of your team, congregations at pokestops, these are all positive experiences that, while very closely tied to the game, are not products of the game itself. That's what I mean when when I say the game is bad, but the experience it provides is good.

The press is super salty about this game because it really BTFO the idea that Nintendo can't compete with mobile, which has been a big part of their 'Nintendoomed' narrative since 2010 or so.
