he uses a cheat program which lets you see all the current variable values in the game. by searching for specific increases or decreases over frames you can find what variables are assigned to what actions in game. he just sort of extrapolates from there. it's not as mindboggling as many people think when they watch this

Honestly, something has happened in the last few years that has made N64 games the most fascinating from a programming perspective. The OoT speedrun/glitch community is insane too, and I think it just has to do with the N64 being right on the cusp of the technological leap to 3D, so the underlying code is relatively easy to break down, but at the time they were writing it, this sort of shit had practically never been done before.

I mean, Nintendo gets a lot of shit these days, some of it deserved, but they deserve a lot of respect for their work on Mario 64 and Zelda and shit even goddamned Wave Race. Those games damn-near perfected 3D gameplay while the rest of the industry was still making shit like Bubsy 3D. These days any chucklefuck can grab Unreal or Unity, but back then they were just making it up as the went.
