I was alive in 1997. You guys will never. Never understand how amazing this game was. I played it in KB Toys and could not even believe what I was playing. The graphics, gameplay, music. Now 20 years later, you all mock it. At the time it was pretty much the moon-landing of videogames.

It's fun to imagine the impression it left on people who were playing it at the time

>I was alive in 1997.
I wish everyone on Sup Forums was.

I was too young to fully appreciate how good this game truly was, but damn did I spend a lot of time into it.

>LMAO why did final fantasy begin with 7 tho xD
Babbies like you were made to be mocked.

I was 10 years old in 97, broheim. My family was poor, so I didn't have a memory card for my playstation when I got the console for christmas in 99. I would rent final fantasy 7 from a video store, play the first couple hours (the furthest I ever got was the monster fight after getting red), then have to turn the console off and lose all my progress. I did that at least 5 or 6 times. This game blew my fucking mind when I was young.

>tfw playing MGS with no memory card
>always got tired and turned it off after fighting Grey Fox

>FF7 was his first Final Fantasy
>not being blown away by the jump to 3D from FF6
>not getting chills from the orchestrated version of the main theme from the NES game
newfag

>KB Toys whats up senpai? Man that was a long time ago.

Yeah. This was true though. I mean, this game had commercials of the FMV running at prime time. That was practically unheard of back then. Now we think that's what games do. But back then, it was jaw dropping.

That's the game that made me buy a Playstation. It was basically the cutting edge for home.

Yup. I wasn't poor, but I used up all my money and my parents' willingness to buy me stuff for a while so I made it all the way to the sephiroth burn down the town sequence and couldn't save. Oh well.

no it wasn't, it was the first fucking big RPG on the normie console. it was a LOT of peoples first experience with RPGs and since it was getting a lot of buzz and i mean a LOT of buzz from the mags at the time, people started playing it.

before that, RPGs were for nerds and geeks even though everyone had dragon warrior 1 on NES

I fell in love with Final Fantasy games on the SNES but when Square jumped to the Playstation I pretty much wrote them off. But the complete lack of RPGs on the N64 and the fact that the entire world wouldn't stop talking about awesome FF7 was eventually persuaded me to give it a try. I still remember starting the game for the first time that Christmas morning and just being blown away. After the first 20 minutes I was convinced that no other video game would ever top it.

I liked Legend of Legaia more.

shit dude, i can remember the commercials well.
it was just them boasting about the 100 or so people and all the computers used to render the graphics and shit. there was like zero gameplay. i also remember another commercial for sears that holiday where santa is playing FF7, he summons titan i think.

i feel super sad that its impossible to convay what it was like to really grow UP with video games, all the changes, the new tech and graphics each gen from 3rd gen to 7th. now we hit a bit of a stumbling block that i really hope we get over.

I'm actually doing my first playthrough right now. Just got to the Gold Saucer. I know a few things about the game, but just the obvious major plot elements. It really holds up; I'm having a ton of fun with it.

Mi familia. Are you me? Word for word bro.

us 90s gamers huh

im an 80's gamer though...

I know that feel, OP. I was in 8th grade drooling over the GameFan (decent gaming mag printed on high quality paper) that had like 30 pages dedicated to FF7 like half a year before it was released. Longest. Wait. In. My. Life.

Beat the game in under a week then farmed stat boost mats in the sunken airplane for shits and grins. Good times.

being born on 97 doesnt count. I was 12 then. Get on my level nigger.

I was an adult in 1997. It was nothing special.

FF7 really was pretty mind-blowing at the time. I feel like mario 64 left a bigger impact on me back then, tho

>One of the character attributes doesn't even fucking work

mario 64 was a real game changer though
i mean, nintendos biggest franchise, the one that revived fucking gaming, was going into a new frontier and even from the pics it looked amazing.

you youngins gotta remember, there was near zero coverage on this shit outside of magazines. so no fucking YT, no nintendo directs telling you everything or fucking trailers.

then

then you fucking played the demo of a game you were SALIVATING OVER 2 YEARS TO PLAY and it blows any and ALL expectations away. its a 20/10, holy shit, those fucking jap wizards did it and made a game that shouldn't possibly exist called mario 64

and the rest is fucking history

It really didn't make an impact on me. I'm not entirely sure why that is, since at the time I thought FF6 was the greatest thing ever and was easily impressed by fancy FMVs, but it just didn't hold my attention.

I think the first PS1 RPG that really blew me away was Vagrant Story.

I rented it without a memory card

I thought the game was a bore in 97 and play more Twisted Metal.

>tfw I was 12 when FFVII came out

Not sure if you're serious or a troll, but your post is 100% true. FFVII was amazing when it came out.

Yeah, all the ADD kids I knew hated FFVII because it was boring.

Actually now that I think about, until the game was about five years old, I never ever spoke to anyone who just thought FFVII was "good" or "ok" or "eh, not something I'd play again but I enjoyed it enough for one go."

No, literally everyone I ever spoke to about FFVII until around 2003 either loved and hailed it as one of the greatest games ever or said it was gay boring shit.

I was 11 in 1997. This game was dogshit.

>remembering the days when you could be completely blown away by a game

This thread is the most saddening thing I've read in awhile.

Everyone praises it, what are you talking about? I know and I bet in 1997 it was amazing; but I still think it's not the best myself, I think FF8 was the best FF, and it should'eve been the last one in the series honestly.

I was born in 95 and I'd say the closest thing for me was playing oblivion the first tI'm around release. I've played FF7 (on fact, begged my mom to find me a copy when I was like 10) and it holds up pretty well.

So uhh y'know.

What the fuck are you talking about dude? 1997 was ages--

>people born in 97 are already of legal age to drive, vote and watch porn LEGALLY

88 birth here bros.

True 90's kid.
Love ff7.

well now all the kids know what its like to grow up with Halo and CoD on their xbox 360's
And those kids will be shit talking the next group who come through with "you don't know how great gaming was on my 360 as a 12 year old screaming at people online"

Only people born in 98 or lower can even be here, I think most of us understand. I feel like you were born right in 97 though

wow

same with OOT!

It WAS great though.

>The graphics, gameplay,
Both mediocre.

its sad because its true, but the 360 era was terrible rehashed shit that introduced nothing new

Who's mocking it?

>Alive
So you're 19?

It was the 90s Skyrim then?

Hold me Sup Forums.

Not him but that's exactly how it was from my perspective

>I was alive in 1997.
There are people here who weren't? Oh god there are people here who weren't.

I was born in 1996 and played this game like a year ago. It was okay I guess.

SMT>FF desu

It's not that great of a game honestly. Best of the series sure (at least post 1996 mainline) but there were plenty of other JRPGs even at the time that were far better.

It's good and all, but it's definetly not even in my top 20 JRPGs.

I mostly just hate the people that haven't even made it to the second disk before they start sucking this game's cock.

>tfw born in 1985

It sucks, but in fairness they're really the ones that should being lurking a video game board, not us. They belong here. We should have moved on literal ages ago.

Dude, IN THIS VERY THREAT.
Trust me, I would know ;)

I remember getting my first ps1. some dude had just gone to college and was getting rid of it and my grandmother got it for me thinking i would lke it. it came with ff7 ff7 walkthrough, and twisted metal. that fucking gameguide was my bible as a kid.

Had a cousin who played it. Looked incredible, but I was just way too young (7 years old) to really fully understand the significance of it. Same goes for many other games at the time that were targeted toward 19 year olds.

All I had was a gameboy and that was something I could understand because the games were pretty damn easy.

I'd argue 9 was better.

How long should someone wait before they decide to like a game?

>90's feels

Late 90's Playstation era was a gold mine of content.

I was born in 1998. I doubt i missed out on those ps1 and n64 games. My childhood was alright. Besides there are remake for ffvii being made.

I was also born in 98, you're embarrasing me dude stop it

>How long should someone wait before they decide to like a game?
For JRPGs I believe they need to play the entire story to know if they like it or not.
It's a genre that relies 90% on plot and good storytelling. It'd be no good to just scream it's good only 1/4th through the game.

I was born in 82 and can confirm. This game ran commercials (unheard of then) and even the CG was unbelievable. Most of us had seen graphics top out with N64 and nothing there showed smoke moving, fans turning, or high quality (for then) music.

It was going from tricycle to spaceship. It earned every bit of praise. Leaving Midgar and realizing you had only been in one city out of an entire planet was mindblowing.

Too bad it's so difficult to appreciate it all now. I get it but being outshined by later games isn't much of a negative. There's a reason 20 years later we still talk about it.

I first played it 3 years ago, still blew my mind and its probably my personal favorite game

26th birthday tomorrow bros. Hold me.

>people who were born in 1998 will waste the rest of their adult lives posting on a chinese imageboard.

To be fair, getting 3 bros to sign in on a temporary online profile to play Halo 3 split screen big team battle together was an absolute riot.

Beat the PS4 remaster today. So. Fucking. Awesome.

38th birthday 2 months ago. Get the fuck off my lawn.

OP is right.

FF VII was like a fucking comet hitting the planet. Shit gets released constantly in the age we're in now but when we played that game it felt like we were playing something from the 5th dimension.

Remember when people paid $60 for a whole game just to get their hands on the demo disc that came with it?

Yeah that's how Zone of Enders became popular.

Who else first played ff7 on the Playstation Underground demo disc?

Dude you're just as bad as the fools who troll you.
I was born in 84 dude. I was so thristy for this game that I ended up working on the album Voices of the Lifestream.
This game didn't age well but I've played more than a few times on epsxe. Hard mode patches revived the gameplay a bit for me.
I don't think the remake will be any good but ill still buy it. I didnt think any of that dirge shit was any good so I'm glad I didnt buy it.
But yeah, I think I understand what it was like. I think you need to understand that when you type shit like this you sound dumb as hell, and you only enhance the view that fans of this game are shilling dipshits.

There is nothing be embrassed about user. All my mates hated the ps2 and prefered all games and up. While these guys grow up with mario 64, spyro, final fantasy and crash.
>We grow with mario kart double dash, super mario sunshine, kingdom hearts, tales of symphonia, god of war, sonic games, dragon ball and naruto games and ninja gaiden.

Ff7 was only good for the spinoffs and Ergheiz.

It was the Dark Souls of the era.

Just like how Halo was the Dark Souls of 2001-2005.

Basically the Evangelion of video games.

Crisis Core is one of the worst games I ever played so no it isn't.

Final Fantasy VIII was the Dark Souls of Persona of Dragon Quest games.

This.

6 was better in the end, but the 3d jump was amazing for everyone involved.

VIII was a Sword Arts Online.

Literally.

>This game ran commercials (unheard of then)

the fuck?
games had commercials, dumbass

I agree that crisis code was shit.
Not all the spinoffs were good.

I was 15 and I thought it was pretty boring compared to Chrono Trigger.

>You guys will never.
That's not a sentence.

i can tell you didn't because PS1 games used to be $70 in the mid 90s and dropped to $50 around the late 90's

None of them were good. Aside from CC there was also Dirge of Cerberus which literally nobody thinks was a good game, and that phone game nobody outside Japan played.

>We should have moved on literal ages ago.
To what?

Wow

What's that number between 70 and 50

I'm gonna come back with an Electronic Gaming Monthly page scan as soon as I'm done taking a shit and then you're fucking finished amigo

yeah, and i loved super smash bros melee back when i was 10 but i took off the nostalgia goggles and realized the game is dogshit

>1997
1995 master race here

I was 16 years old in 1997. There were other games at the time that I found more impressive.

The only thing it had going for it was hype and cultural attention. I saw an advertisement for the game during the coming attractions at a movie theater. It was the first time I had seen a video game advertised anywhere other than specialist publications. This was at a time where I'd have to go to specialist computing hobby shops just to buy PC games. Seeing commercials for a video game blew my mind.

The game itself? I bought it. Everyone did. Didn't particularly wow me, though.

dude, i remember paying fucking 69.99 for shit
fuck, i remember CT being goddamn 79.99!

PS1 games did hit $50 but game prices were all over the damn place. game A could be $50 and game B could be $70. be happy that 99% of games now are all $60 plus tax and aren't fucking $80 because its CoD or Halo

it's a shame that ff7 has aged so horribly. i've tried to play it several times but jrpgs are fucking tiresome in all their exposition.

as much as Sup Forums likes to shit on "games" without fucking gameplay, ff7 should be near the top.

The advertising was better than the game

>ff7 should be near the top.

I can think of a few worse examples even within the same series.

/vr/.

All the age threads there put people in their 30's-50's.

That's a long shit

Lol. That's how long it takes me sometimes. Fucking shit doesn't want to leave.

I was alive too but I was only 1 years old at the time.

The amount of dillusion itt has to be a joke. Even in 97 we had more visually impressive games, far better music, and the gameplay was literally just 3D generic Final Fantasy.
Sure, if you are/were a weab I can understand how much it must have meant to you that you finally got outdated footing but don't polish a turd and tell me it's gold.

Evening fellow 30+ year old; the ride never ends, does it?
