How has such an ugly game aged so well? How is a game with an engine this fucking bad still fun to play in 2016? What went so right?

the map design, everything is condensed and is basically a side attraction because of the way the road loops around. everything is easy to get to, you don't spend too much time wandering around aimlessly before you find something interesting. that is the problem that Fallout 3 had, you could wander for several minutes without finding anything of note.
Did somebody said New Vegas thread?
No, unfortunately
Good writing and effort and creativity and care. If everyone wasn't so greedy or stupid, more games would be this good
Fallout new vegas has one of the largest circlejerk communities I swear
good writing?
characters you are able to actually care about
dedicated modding community
All it's flaws can be attributed to a rushed development, it's honestly one of the best games to come out in the last decade
People enjoy NV religiously
Which makes sense considering both it's predecessor and successor are garbage in everything that made NV special
I don't think it's just that. It's good on its own merits as well.
How can all of Sup Forums suck 1 games dick so much? It wasnt even that good. The western setting felt totally out of place in a post apocalyptic theme, the bugs were absolutely gamebreaking, there were fucking THREE loading screens separating the Las vegas strip, Mr house was a shitty character, The player character has absolutely 0 backstory and it makes 0 sense for him to just suddenly stay in the mojave when he is a courier from somewhere else, theres no way you wouldnt have died from being shot in the head from benny.
Like there are so many glaring problems with NV i have to wonder if Sup Forums is just full of obsidian shills salty they will never be allowed to ruin another fallout game.
Fallout 4 came out and everyone went back to NV to get their dose of (actual) fallout
What went right Sup Forums?
Opinions: The Post: The Movie
is there a mod that makes gunplay not feel like im shooting broken bb guns? I really want to like fallout 3 and NV but I can't get over how awful the gunplay feels to me
>ancient gamebryo RPG/FPS has more players than cutting edge MOBA epic badass buzzword shooter.
Literally too hobby grade for me.
How many dicks do (You) need up your ass every day
Fallout 4 is better
Cause the people working on it really genuinely cared instead if being a bunch of soulesss code monkeys and thier other equivalents to sate the shitty vision if a tiny tiny man
>The western setting felt totally out of place in a post apocalyptic theme,
>Mr.House was a shitty character
>player has absolutely 0 backstory
> it makes 0 sense for him to just suddenly stay in the mojave when he is a courier from somewhere else, theres no way you wouldnt have died from being shot in the head from benny.
What version of NV did you play
>The western setting felt totally out of place in a post apocalyptic theme
the game does have serious flaws but this is the most wrong thing i've seen on Sup Forums in a while
>presenting random opinions as fact
Just stop trying.
I havent been anally fucked in a while now.
>i cant refute any of the arguments because deep down i know new vegas was an unfished, unpolished buggy mess that requires like 4 unofficial patches just to play
It's almost like graphics don't matter.
It's gamebryo engine, means nothing you can do, besides replacing your companions with naked lolis.
>>player has absolutely 0 backstory
What is the player characters backstory?
Also why would he stay when he obviously comes from somewhere else and has family? You never speak or hear from them again?
I know this is bait, but here we go
>The western setting felt totally out of place in a post apocalyptic theme
It's a desert, a desert where cowboys were when they ruled the west and is located in such an area it is not a stretch they start appropriating that aesthetic when society starts rebuilding.
>Bugs were gamebreaking
That's what happens when you are forced to use Gamebryo
>Loading screens
Yeah, that's shit. I agree with this point.
>Mr house was a shitty charcter
lol, what? Explain.
>The player had 0 backstory
>This is somehow bad for an RPG
Also the reason why he stayed is because he is pissed.
>There's no way you wouldn't have died from being shot in the head.
People survive being shot in the head all the time. Is their life shittier afterwards? Yes, but they survived. Hell, some people survive with only a wound with no nerves damaged.
Who are you quoting?
I played it on 360 3 times, fyi, and it only had the occasional bug or crash common to literally anything on the 360
It's barneyfag btw.
>HOW DARE YOU TALK SHIT ABOUT MY FAVORITE GAME TRIGGERED REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
If you cant accept criticism of something it means deep down you know its shit and are just in denial
Because it's an RPG and you form your backstory.
>durr, no backstory.
You didn't play the whole game, did you?
damn thats a shame
Play Lonesome Road you troglodyte
>Complains about the lack of backstory
>Then uses implications that the courier came from somewhere else and has a family
See, you can't reliably say he has a family or comes from somewhere else due to... well, the lack of backstory.
>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>RESPOND TO MY POST
>BUY MY GAME
>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Go die
rank the Fallout games
NV > 2 > 4 > TactIcs > 3
I won't bother starting new thread, but anyone can explain what the fuck was Ulysses' problem with Courier? I delivered some nuclear detonator shit I didn't even know about and that resulted in the creation of the Divide? It was kinda confusing.
>It's a desert, a desert where cowboys were when they ruled the west and is located in such an area it is not a stretch they start appropriating that aesthetic when society starts rebuilding.
Oh so thats another thing. According to the FALLOUT 1 GAME MANUAL ITSELF, the atomic bombs dropped in the great war had WAAAY more nuclear fallout than regular nuclear weapons. This means there should be ZERO AREAS not affected by nukes being dropped everywhere. that means that the entire premise of the mojave not being hit by nuclear fallout is complete bullshit from the start.
>are forced to
no one forced them to do anything. They AGREED to make the game.
>lol, what? Explain.
literally a rip off of every other BENEVOLENT DICTATOR ANDREW RYAN MAY MAY in video games. He even looks like andrew ryan.
>>This is somehow bad for an RPG
Yes. You should know where your character comes from , even if you get to choose it. Its completely immersion breaking in a RPG to be playing someone that just randomly appears out of nowhere for no reason other than MUH PLOT DEMANDS IT.
>People survive being shot in the head all the time. Is their life shittier afterwards? Yes, but they survived.
the player character quite literally suffered 0 negative side effects from being shot in the head and only having a shitty doctor look at them. I want you to think about how retarded this is.
The real question is how does such a shitty game have such a loud, zealous and obnoxious following?
Are you retarded? Only like 2 nukes landed in Mojave, Mr. House destroyed most of them before they even hit the surface.
Courier 6 once delivered an item that accidentally blew up Hopeville and Ashton
I think you can deny that you had any involvement through the entire DLC
These 2 things are contradictory. Does the main character have a backstory or do they not? Where do they come from? Why didnt they return?
no thx that dlc was buggy and boring as fuck.
>courier came from somewhere else
If you didnt come from somewhere else it would mean your family and house are somewhere in the mojave, which you never ever ever ever see or find.
>cowboys were a machination of movies
>movies are completely dead in fallout
>somehow everybody acts like cowboys
Anyone else bothered by how little thought went into this setting?
>LOOK THIS GAME IS BAD NO BACKSTORY!
Play the DLC that explains it
>NOOO TOO BUGGY PLZ
?????
why are you so angry about a game you've clearly never played
IF people have to play a broken buggy dlc to understand the characters backstory, the game is shit.
Even fucking dragon age cisquisition explains where the character comes from.
>4 above anything
>4 anywhere near NV
Usillys is pissed because the courier delivered a package to the divide and it detonated killing or mutating most of the survivors. Ulysses saw the group in the divide and thought they could become their own nation, greater than NCR or Caesers Leigon. I think you can just call him crazy and say that you didn't deliver the package but I don't remember it's been a while since I played Lonesome Road.
You are forgetting Fallout 2 user. This game takes place after Fallout 2 and society was already rebuilding by then
>no one forced them to do anything. They AGREED to make the game.
They agreed to make the game but are put under strict restrictions, such as time, forcing them to use assets and Bethesda's buggy as fuck engine.
>literally a rip off of every other BENEVOLENT DICTATOR ANDREW RYAN MAY MAY in video games. He even looks like andrew ryan.
Too bad his ideals differ from Ryan.
>Yes. You should know where your character comes from , even if you get to choose it. Its completely immersion breaking in a RPG to be playing someone that just randomly appears out of nowhere for no reason other than MUH PLOT DEMANDS IT.
Backstory for Fallout 1: You grew up in a Vault and need to find a water chip for said vault
Backstory for Fallout 2: You grew up in a village founded by the original protagonist and must find a GECK for said village.
Backstory for New Vegas: You are a courier for the Mojave express and someone steals your latest package.
Doesn't sound like too much of a stretch. Also as other Anons said, Lonesome road
>the player character quite literally suffered 0 negative side effects from being shot in the head and only having a shitty doctor look at them. I want you to think about how retarded this is.
You ignore the last part of that point. Good fucking job.
I'd like to point out lonesome road's entire "backstory" for the character is a delivery that went wrong.
Not so much "backstory" as it is "something that happened on one weekend in the protag's life.
But you are not given anyone specific, you create your character with your own backstory.
You could be literally anyone but then you became a courier, what's hard to understand? It's like you could be literally anyone but then you decided to become a retard on anonymous taiwanese knitting board.
>big bad bombs destroy any ingrained culture
Also, they clearly still have music.
Music that is all about cowboys and .44 revolvers and saddles and the like
shh you dont want to upset their circlejerk.
NV is for lowbrow mindless normies who like things that dont take a lot of thought. Its pretty much the big bang theory of video games considering it breaks its own lore all the time.
>western setting
>out of place
Dude, the first two fallouts had the same same theming. It was actually heavier in 2. Are you upset that it wasn't over saturated, "le super kooky quirky" 1950's theming like 3 and 4?
>proceeds to scavenge junk for 20 hours straight in fallout 4 and build 5 settlements
Because Obsidian knows how to make a good Fallout game unlike Bethesda who can't even make a Fallout game.
What if the courier was a lone drifter that kind of just took jobs wherever he is in the Mojave?
That's the point of the lack of backstory, so that it gives players the freedom to come up with whatever character they want without someone contradicting them.
>346051294
I find it pathetic that you waited ten minutes to bait and get replies until I revived this thread. You should just end your life if you have nothing better to do
>This game takes place after Fallout 2 and society was already rebuilding by then
How fucking stupid are you to not understand how long that much nuclear fallout would last for? Literally thousands of years.
>but are put under strict restrictions,
not an excuse. They did not have to make the game, they chose to knowing full well they would have to use a shitty engine.
>You are a courier for the Mojave express and someone steals your latest package.
where the fuck is your house and your family then?
>You could be literally anyone but then you became a courier,
then WHERE IS YOUR HOUSE IN THE MOJAVE. Where did you live before the game started?
...
I think it supposed to be allegory on players, who just taking quests and skip dialogs only thinking about destination. It's supposed to caught them off guard when they realize how serious some actions could be even if they not aware of them. Well it's just my dumb opinion.
>played through this game once, took maybe 30 hours
>"well, that was neat"
>played through it again, about 20 hours
>"huh, despite drastically different decisions, nothing really changed in the slightest"
>played through the dlc
>"well, atleast owb was fun"
>never played it since
>completely forget about this forgettable standalone expansion
>only reason I even remember playing it is because there's like 3 people on Sup Forums constantly posting about this game
>this mediocre game
I really don't get it, shouldn't you expend your efforts into a worthwhile game? Because this definitely isn't one.
Fallout 4 was shit for entirely different reasons, but its setting was actually 100x better.
>was a lone drifter that kind of just took jobs wherever he is in the Mojave
he would still have family
Because it's an Obsidian game. Nearly every single game they have made has a zealous fanbase on Sup Forums that ignores any faults and hypes up their respective game as genre-defining. The funny part is even Avellone is completely open about the faults while the fanbase feels compelled to aggressively defend the games.
>The western setting felt totally out of place in a post apocalyptic theme
> The player character has absolutely 0 backstory
>How is a game with an engine this fucking bad still fun to play in 2016? What went so right?
Unlike Fo4 and Fo3, NV offers variety and replayability, even if the developer made some incredibly stupid decisions and didn't try to finish the game.
>Good writing and effort and creativity and care.
No
30 hours is pitiful. it takes me roughly 165 hours to visit and explore every location and finish every sidequest, and that's not counting DLC. you missed out on a lot of content.
>Why don't I have a preset character!?!?
That's up to you dumbass. You have to roleplay in an RPG.
Radio wasn't even invented when cowboys were a thing.
There are no saddles in new vegas, because there are no horses and brahmin are shit for mounting.
Yet everybody talks, fights, and drinks like a cowboy.
Makes no sense, zero thought put into it.
...
>The western setting felt totally out of place in a post apocalyptic theme
What the fuck is the "setting" supposed to be in post apocalyptics? I always got a western vibe, even in Mad Max.
Why not post about alpha protocol instead?
I mean, it was pretty bad too, but it was way better than this mess.
Or Kotor2, that game is outright good.
>How fucking stupid are you to not understand how long that much nuclear fallout would last for? Literally thousands of years.
Are YOU stupid? The FIRST FALLOUT GAME literally has a point where it says the nuclear radiation can be sifted through dirt, making it relatively harmless. Also, ignore the point about Fallout 2's society, that's fine.
>not an excuse. They did not have to make the game, they chose to knowing full well they would have to use a shitty engine.
They made it because they want to make a fallout game. If I was given the choice to make a Fallout game, I would. You can tell that Obsidian respects the work put into the original game.
>where the fuck is your house and your family then?
See. Also, this is a wasteland, your family is probably dead.
Having a preset character and having the player character quite literally randomly appear out of nowhere for no reason are 2 completely different things. The game should let you choose your own back story if its not going to have a predetermined one. Forcing the player to imagine things in their head is not gameplay, its not clever, its not writing, its just lazy.
...
>What the fuck is the "setting" supposed to be in post apocalyptics?
post apocalyptic
>I always got a western vibe, even in Mad Max.
Then you're as bad as Obsidian
>Game where you get to create and customize your own character
>"BUT WHAT'S MY BACKSTORY"
Your backstory is whatever you want it to be. That's literally how it works. Your character ends up being more defined by how you play them anyway, not where they arbitrarily came from.
Fallouts 1, 2, and New Vegas aren't "About" your character, your character is just the lens through which you observe and initiate change in the world around you. That world is what Fallout's "About." The world is the "Main character," not you.
>post apocalyptic
Describe what a post apocalyptic setting is.
Post apocalyptic
Wow I love cartoony plastic buildings
Why not?
>your family is probably dead.
where are their graves then?
>he FIRST FALLOUT GAME literally has a point where it says the nuclear radiation can be sifted through dirt,
which doesnt make sense at all even in its own universe.
>Or Kotor2, that game is outright good.
Kotor 2 is another unfinished buggy mess that modders only JUST RECENTLY managed to restore all of the missing content that obsidian just failed to place in the game.
I don't feel like spelunking every cave, the first 3 caves I hit were filled with animals and one loot crate, it's boring, there's no reward in wasting bullets on a box full of garbage.
The most sensible thing to do is just bounce quest to quest, and all things considered most of the quests are piss easy and can be dealt with really quick if you're just going to grab the first available solution.
I did it 30 hours hitting a lot of content, I didn't even really skip any side quests, I made sure to clear out my log I just didn't go exploring because the world is so bland.
Wut
Yep, I've been playing it for the first time recently and the environment is totally unhinged. There's no cohesion or logical progression from one place to another, it's just random shit thrown across the map.
You even worse than that idiot who trying to ruin FNV threads just because he can.
In most post- post- apocalypse settings you have frontiers, loners and the open wilderness. Pretty much staples in the western genre.
>western culture literally stopped when the bombs dropped
Describe what a post apocalyptic setting is. What makes a setting post apocalyptic? What are their features? Their common themes and aesthetic?
>Kotor 2 is another unfinished buggy mess that modders only JUST RECENTLY managed to restore all of the missing content that obsidian just failed to place in the game.
Yeah but atleast it has a story that makes sense and decisions that sorta have an impact on what's going on, unlike new vegas.
>I didn't explore but I know the world was bland
Ok
See
WELL THERE'S SUPERMUTANTS AND RADSCORPIONS AND DEATHCLAWS EVERYWHERE!
AND LOT LOT LOT LOT OF DESTROYED BUILDINGS AND YOU CAN REBUIILD THEM
AND LOT OF ZOMBIES
AND RAIDERS!
you literally described 3
True. on that note i think im going to actually resinstall and play it since its really the only worthwhile game obsidian ever made
>Why not?
Because Obsidian didn't care about established fallout lore, most of what they knew was from Fallout 3, occasionally they'd look things up on the wiki for something to hit the ol' nostalgia button with.
The written is often very bad because of that simple fact.
Yeah Obsidian had a lot of creativity, but they made it clear they didn't want to make a Fallout game, they wanted to make their own game and Fallout is the only thing they were allowed to work with.
>where are their graves then?
Asking about graves in a lawless area is fucking retarded user and you know it.
>which doesn't make sense at all in its own universe
Explain? Because the whole point of Fallout is that society never changes until an exterior agent acts upon it. The world was destroyed, but society and humanity will rebuild, and will probably have the same types of scumbags running around, destroyed world or not.
>why is NV so good
Because obsidian actually gave a shit.
the first caves have shitty loot because they are the first caves. you are likely to go there early in the adventure so obviously they didn't want you finding any overpowered gear. later in the game you find Mark 2 combat armor in a cave, and after you leave the southern area of the map there aren't many more caves, the locations get larger and more complex. if you're trying to complete every quest as fast as possible without considering your decisions then i can see this kind of game is definitely not for you.
>I always got a western vibe, even in Mad Max.
I'd say it's more a case of the wild west community structure being the logical go-to for largely disconnected communities with access to lethal technology.
New Vegas was a bit on the nose about it, but with Fallout 3 retconning human advancement since the War back into hovels and shantytowns, it made sense.
