I recently got into Mount and Blade. I played the first a bit so I can get the Steam trading cards (and I did) and so I can practice for Warband. I played a bit of Warband and saw how much it improved.

Do you stick with a particular faction's troops or piece your army togeather from different parts of Caraldia?

No cost penalty as far as I know, but depending on wars, there will be a morale penalty

I used to use just swadian men at arms since they were basically WH40K terminator marines on horseback who work for pennies.

Now my army depends on what I'm trying to do. Sandnigger cav is great for manhunting. Khergit horse are good for trading. Nords are basically castle crashers. Swadia has decent infantry and cav. Vaegir are good for defense.

there's a fairly active DM and conquest server for the base game

I'm not too crazy about the base game's multiplayer (at least the big team dm stuff) since it seems the hosts always insist on the same factions and matchups, so it gets boring doing Nords vs Rhodoks 20 times in a row.
