Is Final Fantasy XV the most overblown video game release in history? I mean I'm hyped for the game but this is just way too much shit. Just release the game, all this extra shit isn't necessary. I feel the same and couldn't agree more. It just feels strange and weird. Maybe the success that the 13 trilogy had has driven Square mad with greed? So now they want every FF game they release to have its own universe's worth of content around it? If so, that's stupid, also very risky and not worth it. I really hope this shit doesn't happen with the FF7 remake too.

I was just thinking of this the other day. There's this layer of subtlety that older FF games had despite still being some of the most hyped video games of their time. It probably had something to do with the fact that there was just the game and not much else.
They really seem to believe in this game. Or at least they want people to think that they really believe in this game. Either way, I hope for them that it's gonna be as big as they want it to be. They should have waited with the movie until the game is out, though. Noone cares about a tie-in movie for a game they haven't played yet.

Speaking as someone who has been looking forward to this game for many years now, all this extra stuff has increased my hype exponentially. The anime has already become one of my favorites and I'm sure the movie will be great too.

I think Square Enix is hedging all their bets on this. They're the last Japanese AAA publisher, and if they fail miserably on this, all the FF7 Remake will do will balance the checkbook and help them keep the rate of their decline. If this strikes gold however and they make bank on the franchise, then they might actually be able to come out of their slump and be a strong AAA publisher. The problem? They're banking on it early rather than actually releasing a good game and expounding on its success- their core product is potentially lacking, so who gives a shit about the peripheries if that's the case? It's a bet that I'm afraid Square will lose.
All this marketing and the game will still never come close to the popularity levels of FFVII.

The only thing that matters is the finished product. MGSV's trailers were full of cool moments and they ended up showing the entire game, so take footage of Noctis fighting monsters and like it. Also, strong word of mouth on social media moves products in 2016, not hundred million dollar marketing campaigns.

when ffvii came out the internet was not a thing, the hype was purely word of mouth and people saying "holy shit you gotta get a ps1"
it was the 'killer app' the ps1 needed to take hold in the west, and was followed up with classic games like MGS1, spyro, etc
ffxv can't pull that again because of diminishing returns on graphical quality. FFXV isn't gonna make anyone go "wow look at these graphics!" like they did back in 1997. cuz to most people, every modern game on ps4 is pretty much the same level of graphics
