I think this part is what made me afraid of open water in games. It fucking scarred me for life. I went back and it wasn't scary at all as an adult, but falling in the water in Shadow of the Colossus still gives me a small panic attack.
...
How can something be ironically terrifying?
>get a seamoth
>go exploring
>aw look at the cute crab thing with its adorable eyes
>mfw it zooms right the fuck at me
>yfw you run into a reaper leviathan for the first time in survival mode without being aware that they even exist
I think he means unintentionally scary situations in games that don't fall under the horror genre.
I don't know how something can be ironically terrifying.
>go swimming a bit too far out
>all dark and can't make out much
>see something moving around below you past the sheer drop
>hear eerie as fuck sound
Damn that game really does atmospheric spooks so well
What is this? I don't remember this.
sounds like underage and b& talk.
i-i wasnt really scared, j-just ironically terrified i swear
This one is even better if you get the Extended mod from ModDB
Remember when you have to retrieve the Zora eggs to access the Ocean Temple?
Can a person, hypothetically speaking, ironically shit himself?
...
The irony is the thing that scares them isnt scary
This is why I'm terrified for when they add the Sea Emperor and the Sea Dragon into the game. Those things are supposed to be way bigger than the Leviathan. Plus, you'll only encounter them in the dark depths of the ocean, which does not fucking help at all.
This game is pretty damn spooky, mate. And it's only gonna get spookier.
/vr/ responding with obvious.
Seriously, the ocean is fucking terrifying.
Also, as scary as the Vortex were, I found the giant hidden Ice Spider crabs that home in on you to be WAY more terrifying than anything in Welcome to the Machine or the Final Battle.
jesus this looks terrifying...
is the game freeware now?
yes but only in a very specific set of very wry circumstances
So are they already implemented?
when do we get cute meremaiden?
The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear. And the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
ocean and space is spook
npcs seem like they could be pretty cool. or maybe the mermaids look pretty and friendly from afar and when you get close they come swimming toward you and try to kill you
>falling in the water in Shadow of the Colossus still gives me a small panic attack
Fucking shit this.
>fall off the bird
>kerplunk into the water
>look down cause fuck it
>ITS FUCKING INFINITE
Space isn't that spooky.
But Sea Emp is friendly and he will fight against sea dragon
How is emp spooky when he is your bro?
>space isn't spooky
>but water is
The ocean is the pussy version of space.
>get to the sewer level in Serious Sam
>see fish enemies pop up on the radar
How so? There's nothing in space that can kill you.
Except for the near 0K temperature, lack of gravity, no pressure or air and the unimaginable size of it?
Shit man space is the least hospitable place for life.
...
would your head actually explode like that?
Appearance wise, he's pretty scary.
Just because he's cool with ya doesn't mean he can't be at least a little bit intimidating.
ESPECIALLY when you take into the fact that you'll encounter him deep below the ocean, which is almost devoid of any form of light, besides the lava flows scattered about.
space isn't murky with monsters
There's no heads exploding in that picture.
oh. would it explode though?
As if you could survive more than a few minutes under water.
We are ill suited to survive in either of them, but most people associate horror with spooky creatures that are out to kill you. Unless you count aliens, space is pretty boring in that regard.
You can be killed instantly by pellet sized meteors that have been traveling through space from collisions with no loss in momentum due to lack of gravity. We don't have any data on microbes that could possible be residing under the surface of other planets, that could wipe out a country if they somehow return from a space expedition without a proper biological cleansing when the stuff gets back to earth. No pressure, no air, black holes, near 0K temps in particularly desolate areas. Easy to get lost. etc.
No
>Somewhat obscure japanese dev with a fetish for drowning girls
>Makes platformers
>Entire game is an underwater timed metroidvania
What was the word again? Scaroused?
Heads popping in the vacuum of space is pretty much a myth. Freezing up happens faster.
>Ecco
>Not a horror game
But freezing in space takes a long time because radiating heat is slow as fuck.
Not to mention if you're in sunlight that'd a lot of thermal energy being dumped into you.
You still dont just pop though.
...
No you don't, but if your lungs are full of air (from say, holding your breath) then things aren't going to go well for you.
There would be more life in the universe if nothing in space was a threat for it.
...
>Unless you count aliens
aliens are cool/ exciting as fuck, hell even the ones trying to eat and or slaughter you.
but that blank dark space is pure horror, the intangible vastness, the stinging deadly cold, the distant beautiful stars of burning heat that could reduce you and your entire world to dust when its their time to go.
its all so overwhelming
Subnautica creatures have way to much bioluminescence to be scary to me, shit subnautica is just to bright period
space is more fascinating than it is scary.
I know it wasn't supposed to be scary it pretty much made me stop progressing for a week or so
>logic
this fucking game, and specifically this fucking level. when I was a kid I was so scared of these alien shits in the sewage that I would completely close the game for a couple hours and try to brave through it again.
Not always, *camper*
This shit. Also, not shit-myself-dead-scary, but some of the most tense moments I had years ago were the solo missions in Operation Flashpoint and Vietcong, mostly because death could arrive in a split second, either in the form of a sniper, hidden machinegunner watching a field or in Vietcong's case, a punji stick pit. I hated being solo in those games.
>I always disliked going through this level, the enemies felt like actual zombies, the creepiness of the mansion in general, and the eerie music made this level actually pretty scary. Especially on Hard difficulty.
>This is from Timesplitters: Future Perfect if you're wondering.
Can't you theoretically survive in space for a few seconds if you get all of the air out of your lungs, close your eyes, shut your mouth, and cover your nose and ears?
That looks really bad for Playstation 2
I think the complete lack of heat and ozone filtration would be pretty deadly.
You want to open your mouth and not cover your nose and ears but the rest is good. You would only last as long as the oxygen in your blood allows so hyperventilate beforehand.
Wouldn't matter, heat transfer to vacuum is slow as fuck, you'd die of asphyxiation long before that was a problem. You might get a hell of a sunburn if you survived though.
DELET THIS
>feeling the capillaries in your skin swell and boil while your lungs distend like a balloon and your eyes and mouth desiccate from flash evaporation
say that to space's face and not online fucker
>le skeleton so spooky xD
Like that.
It's pretty amazing when a handheld game manages to scare people, a GBA one at that, and it's not because of jumpscares, it's simply something chasing you that you can't kill.
I remember Timesplitters 2 creeping me out as well
You can spawn Sea Emperor and Sea Dragon in experimental mode. I think the Sea Emperor is going to be smewhat friendly as you have to free him from the Lava Castle.
Endless Ocean 2 is actually terrifying in places.
When the giant Leader shark stalks you outside of a wrecked ship.
When you swim out into the murky endless void and see giant creatures just swim out of the fog.
When you see a fucking Plesiosaur
find a binary system and come in THROUGH one of the near-contact stars
you will know apprehension.
He also is supposed to be larger when actually implemented
the ultimate answer

Fucking 40 Fathoms man.
Bitchass pussy that thing looks adorable
The fucking song that plays while she's running after you doesn't help at all
THAT'S what terrifies me about him as well.
Large oceanic creatures are just fucking terrifying in general.
>deep sea fishing with uncle
>jump off boat and into water so I can pee
>have goggles on
>look down
>nothing but absolute blackness
>hearth sinks into my ass
>swim to the boat asap and never do that again
She?
Woah mama
No.
Why did you have a hearth?
I don't have an irrational fear of oceans though.
This guy and the Ice Cream Truck are fucking terrifying.
This game wasn't scary, but damn was it unnervingly creepy.
And the theory that you may have been the villain the whole time just makes it more creepy.
The first level in Underworld gave me PTSD
> mfw there was that cheat that played the wampa scream constantly in the main menu
Someone just watched event horizon
I think this game is one of the reasons E10+ was made.
>tfw we will never get another Ecco game
It happens in other media too, 2001: A Spess Odyssey has it happen as does one episode of the Expanse.
>irrational fear of oceans
>he thinks being afraid of the abyss with creatures many times larger and faster than you able to tear you in half while also being in constant danger of drowning at least is irrational
>forgetting that you're in their turf now that's complete with currents and waves that can pull you under or further out in seconds
As someone who played it spoiler-free, getting to the purified zones for the first time to revisit the level was 1000% spooky.
I have a rational fear of them.
This happened to me in the florida keys
>be native floridian
>go snorkeling for the hundreth time
>jump off boat into the water
>didnt realize how far away from the reef my family docked the boat
>nothing but darkness straight down
Doesn't help that the last time I went I got stalked by a 5 foot eel.
1. Metroid fusion - hiding from this bitch. Everything gets quiet, eerie music, footsteps, and a way overpowered clone of you starts chasing you.
2. Also, parts of Prime and Prime 2. So many creatures, much atmospheric.
I love this game but it makes me so fucking anxious.
>metroid prime
>room goes dark
>youtube.com
I swear to god I've seen a game like this before on the original Xbox... I think the whole premise was that you were a bounty hunter, and that the space levels were like this...
>go down tall stairwell in pirate base
>hear pirates but don't see them
>look around
>they're above and below clinging to the grating and walls around you
The pirates in Prime 1 were so damn awesome. Looked more like weird flaming eyed jaguars.
>fear of oceans
>irrational
It's an environment your evolutionary lineage quit adapting for several million generations ago, being afraid of getting tossed back into it is extremely rational for many reasons
I came here to post this, i still find it amazing a GBA game managed to make me feel so tense anytime the SA-X showed up.
>Also, parts of Prime and Prime 2
Also this, the feeling of being isolated and alone got pretty spooky after awhile especially after reading some of the scan logs.
Early Prime is terrifying because of how weak you are and how easy it is for you to die if you're unskilled, doesn't help that Chozo Ruins is filled with acid.
