The big difference here is that Nintendo didn't make those shitty CDI games.

Because it was a fairly harmless infant that wouldn't attack her and the last of its kind.

She probably empathized with it on some level thanks to her own backstory, and then decided after a minute that it'd be more beneficial to study the last Metroid than to just murder it. And it was a good decision, considering the vaccine they made from it saved her life and helped bring an end to the X Parasite infestation.
