I dunno why, but for me, the scarier things in games tend to be really surreal/ambiguous. Not even a matter of "tone" or "atmosphere." It's more along the lines of "the more I think about it, the scarier it gets." A lot of different 3D Mario levels kinda freaked me out when I was younger because of this, especially the ones that took place in the vast emptiness of the sky.
