Was the sixth generation the last golden age of gaming we'll ever see?

Was the sixth generation the last golden age of gaming we'll ever see?

You could meet someone at a video rental store, see them checking out something like Viewtiful Joe, and immediately know they were cool.

Gaming as a hobby feels really saturated now. EVERYONE immediately finds out what's "cool" because I guess the internet has made the hobby more accessible.

Am I talking nonsense? Does anyone agree with me? Post your thoughts.

I like the gamecube too user but ps2 fucking dominates with its library of games. Viewtiful Joe was fun though, but my shit was billy hatcher

So your idea of a "golden age" is just one in which you belong to some super special secret club that not everyone is in on? While I definitely hate some modern trends, games that I like are still being made. And all of the games I loved from my childhood and even some that I always wanted to play but could never get are also available. Aside from the loss of lightgun games (which would be solved if I got off my ass and bought an old TV, which would probably be cheap), I think we live in the best of times.

I miss the days when each console actually had a unique library on them and they didn't all have the same games

I miss the game quantity above all else. More great games kept being churned out by the 6th gen due to low production costs, made the market shine the gems. Shit like Nocturne and ratchet/sly were fantastic.

>xbox introduced paid online
>ps2 brought in a shit ton of casuals into the market
>the two dedicated video game consoles sold the worst

6th gen was a mistake

this so much.

yeah I hate that Mario Kart and Smash Bros is also on XBox One and PS4 and that Bloodborne is on PC

oh wait

In my head, I pretend Xbox doesn't exist, and I see two consoles with wildly different libraries in the Wii/WiiU and PS3/PS4. Then there's PC with its own exclusives, of course.

>PC with it's own exclusives

Where?

>the two dedicated video game consoles sold the worst
>Having the option to watch DVDs is a bad thing

it is, because of 6th gen consoles today are now multi media machines

>Was the sixth generation the last golden age of gaming we'll ever see?

In short yes.

>already bored of smash 4 and mario part 10 sucks balls
>stipl play mario party 4-6 as well as melee to this date
>own 40+ cube games
>3 wii u games

Cube was great

>Sup Forums unanimously agrees that 7th gen was the end of the golden age
>/vr/ unanimously agrees that 6th gen was the end of the golden age

so, which is it?

yes

console warring at its lowest
top tier games all around
good reasons to own every console available

>Does anyone agree with me?
yes, i also hate muh hobby become popular and too mainstream

don't be retarded and pretend you can get point-n-clicky games on consoles. Grand Strategy, RTS, 4X, ero-games, plus a lot of other doujin and indie games.

it ended in 2007

and fuck /vr/, board shouldn't even exist. I'm still pissed moot split Sup Forums even further than it needed.

>Gaming as a hobby feels really saturated now.
Gamers are dead, yes.
Today it's all aboit franchises.

Whatever you say, you sony fucking piece of shit.

>it is, because of 6th gen consoles today are now multi media machines
Again
>Implying more options is a bad thing.

>console warring at its lowest
you must be joking

Maybe because you were too young to be on the internet at the time.

...

it is, it used to be about buying consoles based on what exclusives it had but now its changed

>ps2 brought in a shit ton of casuals into the market
If you're complaining about bringing in casuals, you've got the wrong system.

it really shows the age difference between the two boards

>Buy Nintendo console for Nintendo exclusives
>Buy Sony console for Sony exclusives
>Buy a Microsoft computer for XBox exclusives

wow it sure has changed a lot

I really don't remember it being nearly as bad as it had been the gen before, or last gen.

>top selling games are GTA and racing games

okay?

Fuck off.

>it is, it used to be about buying consoles based on what exclusives it had but now its changed
That makes no fucking sense, you still buy console for exclusives, you just also have the option to do other shit with it. There really is no argument against more choice.

you arent looking at it towards a casuals perspective dumbass

what was wrong with gen 6 exactly?
Videogames stopped being good in gen 7, this is a fact. Gen 6 was flooded with 10/10 games

No you fuck off faggot. It's a good thing /vr/ exists or those old games wouldn't get the discussion they deserve. All what Sup Forums needs is more relaxed modding and more fun posting. The board split is fine.

see

Sony has the best exclusives and the PS4 is the only console that's sold well, so clearly I am

Are you honestly implying that casuals don't buy console for games? Nigga they could get a BluRay player if they didn't care about games. Also, still not seeing an argument against more choice.

I saw retro games being discussed all the fucking time, now I don't even fucking see Doom threads anymore.

If anything, Sup Forums needs non-lazy mods

These things come in waves. You can't have a steady flow of awesome without some drawback eventually. Likewise, things never stay shit forever. Things are getting better all the time.

What a great counter argument.

while this is true to an extent (there are lots of games I want this year)
the years of 2008-2015 were fucking unbearable, so much disappointment, and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the games I want this year turn out poor.

>games were easier
>paid online
>on disc dlc
>the best games were sequels from previous gens
>more games were marketed towards casuals
>games was no longer a niche hobby
>basically became too popular during that gen

by the way this is /vr/ opinions on it not mine

you havent met a casual then

name 10

literally everywhere
pc has exclusive genre's ffs

That is because the board split. The board split is good overall. A ton of old games get time for discussion while newer games get plenty of threads. I see no issue with the split.

>2010
>unbearable

pleb taste

name 20

>games were easier
games have always been easy, never understood this argument
>paid online
Dreamcast started it and isn't it technically gen 5? Or is it gen 6? I always see people use them interchangeably here.
>on disc dlc
in gen 6? What games if I may ask.
>best games were sequels
guess games like Eternal Darkness and such went over their heads? Also of course good games are going to get sequels in the new gen, that's a stupid argument.
>more games were marketed towards casuals
whether we like it or not, casuals have always infested gaming, there was always hardcore gamers and casuals, I mean for fuck sake my parents played at the height of pac-man fever and they were both in their 30s
for the last two see above.

Now I know casuals have absolutely ruined gaming because most shit is dumbed down, but only the truly delusional think gaming was ever niche.

I hear you.
I still haven't gotten a PS4 yet because of those years and the impending announcement of Neo. My list of interest is very low though and I feel like just skipping 4. The industry did this to me starting with the game of the year editions. Why bother with day one ever?

exactly, it's fucking annoying, it's either buy it all up front at extra cost, or wait a year and get it for half cost.

>Bloodborne
>inFamous
>Disgaea 5
>Digimon
>Gravy Rush
>Tearaway
>Ratchet & Clank
>Until Dawn
>Uncharted
>Odin Sphere

ok
1 and 2 were better
lol
lol
on vita
also on vita
ok
ok
meh
tell me about this one

>Dreamcast started it and isn't it technically gen 5?

its gen 6 and samba de amigo had on disc dlc

Sony Exclusives are never going to be on PC, I didn't make a list for it to be judged, you said to name exclusives.

is this the official stance? Because I always see people saying it was a glorified gen 5 machine, I was never fortunate enough to own one.
and did it really? Holy shit SEGA has been jews for a while now.

ok now name 10 good ps4 exclusvies

oh I wasn't that guy, I was just judging your choices

They are good. Or are you looking for indie garbage like Undertale and shit like that?

>Dreamcast started it and isn't it technically gen 5?

stopped reading right there

I miss putting in the game thr first time and just playing. No fucking install or downloading of patches. Seemed like the last gen that allowed you to do that.

The Internet is the greatest dichotomy to ever come into the world. It has made everything better, and it has also royally fucked everything up.

I don't miss video rental stores, tho. Gamefly is much better it ain't even funny.

>Oh you like veiwiful joe?
>I don't know, it looked ok, that why I'm renting it.
>Oh cool want to come over and play games sometime?
>No

well I always see people saying that it's a glorified gen 5 machine
so which fucking is it, I know it was gen 6 for all intents and purposes, so why do people say this shit?

Yup. DMC4 the first time was an absolute shock to me. It became the calling card of that gen.

>so why do people say this shit?
>what are shitposters

Hell yea man. Started my collection off with the mainline first. Had gotcha force for a bit but sold it it for decent money

undertale is better than any of those games

This. It was kind of a rude awakening the first time I ever played a game on my PS3.

>pop game in
>here we go dis gon be gud
>installing
>the fuck
>why can't i just play it

No I mean people saying it seriously, not even shitposting. It always baffled me because everyone knows that Dreamcast was gen 6, so I want to know if there was some reason why these people would fathom such a stupid thought.
holy fuck this
fuck modern consoles, fuck blue ray, I have to install and wait for every fucking goddamn game because of this shit, it's maddening.

Gamecube was an interesting console for me. After PSX, I thought for sure I was going to go all in on Sony and skip the Cube. Then my bestie got Smash and pummeled me into dust. I had to have that game if only to crush him. Then I was blown away by release after release in tandem with the PS2's. What a golden age indeed.

>N64 2 was great.
shit bombed yo.

I think what I miss most was that you didn't have to play online to get the best experience out of games

there wasn't much forced multiplayer, the games that did have it were good. there was actual fucking effort involved.
It just so tiresome

>console sold bad so of course it had to be a bad console

so did the Dreamcast, it was still a good console

>no DLC
>no microtransactions
>couch co-op
>decent 3D graphics, clearly flawed but still okay by today's standards
>original and unique titles before the FPS flood truly started
>motherfucking couch co-op

not him but it was decent, it definitely was the last console where nintendo made a genuine effort to make it good until they went full blown casual with the wii. but then again, when games like f zero gx, eternal darkness, and geist sell like shit i dont really blame them

there was DLC, but it was so few and far between that it didn't matter

That's because it was a brave unknown world where devs had the fear of failure breathing down their necks, pushing them to succeed. Now its all about revisiting what worked before not unlike Hollywood.

>no DLC

xbox had DLC underage

Dreamcast and PS2 as well
but there was so few of it that it didn't matter

>That's because it was a brave unknown world where devs had the fear of failure breathing down their necks, pushing them to succeed.

well it's true, look at now, you can flat out trash talk your fans and still be perfectly fine. Even the shittiest of video games somehow make money. Video games are a huge joke

I think the issue is that the industry aged along with it's audience. The NES-SNES was for young kids.

the PS1 and N64 were still for kids, but slightly older kids.

the PS2 and it's generation were more for pre-teens and teens

and then the Xbox360 became the dudebro console for college fratboys, which sort of defined the core agegroup of the generation. And now, this gen is pretty much entirely for adults. Which is why youve got the Xbone trying to be an all-in-one multimedia device that only an adult can really fully appreciate.

and in all this youve got Nintendo, who with the wii, deviated slightly from their usual strategy and in addition to staying mostly kid oriented, appealed to the casual and nongaming crowd with it's sports games and easy to figure out waggle controls, and sort of tried to stay there with the Wii-U, but really has no audience.

gaming has also become a bloated overexpensive industry, which makes the innovation and unique experiments that previous generations did dangerous and suicidal.

in all this youve got indie devs who pander to the particular nostalgia of their generation, which is ok i suppose, you wouldnt get 8 bit platformers or PS1 styled racing games anymore,

But I think the actual "kid" audience has become something of an afterthought compared to adults and young adults, who are easier to really market, while kids are easy to please, but dont have the same disposable cash

dunno if that makes sense, but i think there's something to it

it kind of does matter when it lays the groundwork for DLC

yeah but it was inevitable, and it didn't take off until gen 7.

if you were 4 when the NES launched than you would be 24 when the 360 launched, thats way too old for a college fratboy

Not if you're like me. 21 and a failure who hasn't even signed up for college yet. ;_;

Hold me Sup Forums, I'm getting old. I want to chill on Isle Delfino and not worry about real life.

Ps4 sold alot, must mean it has tons of fun games and not shovelware

it does

but it does?

Love me some fifa, cod and madden on my ps4!

Well he did say 6th gen, not GC. I never owned a GC, had a PS2 and Xbox

>6th gen thread
>OP posts a pic of the fucking gamecube of all consoles
sasuga Sup Forums

>love me some good games on my ps4!

ok? what are you even trying to prove right now?

let's be real though, game systems have been CD players since the early 90s.

biggest problem is nowhere to discuss 2000-2007 games

I liked the 5th better.

The sixth was like this for me:

>Sega died painfully and I was a fan of em
>By the time I liked less action packed or realistic shit
>Worst gen for Final Fantasy, I'm not saying X is bad, just I didn't like it myself
>Handheld games (GBA) were getting more relevant
>Sony was practically a monopoly: the last years of that generation I couldn't even trade my gamecube or xbox games, because "we only accept ps2 stuff" and of course there were 3 shelves for PS2, one for both gamecube and xbox
>Introduction of online multiplayer I couldn't even enjoy
>PC was pretty fucking irrelevant, I remember the only thing I liked about it was being able to emulate games and Ragnarok Online

Honestly I did not like that gen that much. I liked the gamecube, granted. I was still impressed at how it handled graphics a little bit better than the PS2 yet it was small and it felt more like a fucking console to me. But nothing will beat the day that my dad bought the N64 with SM64 and OOT

I think it was actually the opposite. They weren't under pressure to make every game a huge blockbuster that makes hundreds of millions of dollars, so they could make a variety of games for everyone and have modest but respectable success instead of just making whatever was calculated to be the most profitable for the least effort.
