Why haven't you applied to a gaming company yet?
Why haven't you applied to a gaming company yet?
Because I'm useless and can only do menial basic tasks.
>shit pay
>insane hours
>worst job security in the world
I would love to work in game development, but I am a 20 year old NEET without a college degree. What the fuck can I do?
Studied Business.
How do you get into one if you can't code or draw at the moment?
I earn more and have far more opportunities in my current field ;^)
Because no one would take me, i'm a genius but i guess i'm just too good for this gay earth.
If i had the resources i would make the best games ever.
>enjoy eating food?
> why haven't you applied to be a chef?
Be black/trans/female/etc
Why are you here if you only play video games
But that makes sense, you dummy.
>food analogy
>Working for Nintendo
>Working for Nintendo of America
>Working for Nintendo of America after what happened to NST
Might as well commit suicide by that point.
You know anybody hiring accountants?
god's more important
I am a drop out.
The Big Four is always hiring accountants.
>Nintendo of America
Anyone else hiring?
they don't take high school dropouts
>Get in
>Get juicy details
>Snoop around for prototypes and betas
>Secretly line up job
>Leak all sorts of shit
>Quit
I know in the real world you'd get sued out the ass for that but I can dream of pulling a heist on Nintendo
>NST
What?
I'll tell you what happened to Nintendo. This guy:
twitter.com
>@NintendoAmerica Partner/Influence
What am I even gonna do at NoA? Clean balls?
(You)
>Applying for a tech job when they'll just end up hiring somebody's cousin.
They just post job listings for tax purposes. Everybody knows these are just a fake listings and you'll never get hired unless you're balls deep in nepotism.
(Me)
It's the truth though.
I don't want to be a wage cuck
if you want to actually make games, you need to learn to program and make them yourselves
teach yourself how to program, make a game
Yeah, I guess that's the only way to go for me. Thanks for the suggestion user
what would I do there? sweep the floors?
because i dont want to get laid off when nintendo goes bankrupt in 10 years
NST is Nintendo Software Technologies, they were the studio responsible for 1080 Avalanche, Crystalis, Metroid Prime DS. and Wave Race. They were fucked over when some rookie designer from Nintendo of Japan came over and directed Project HAMMER, when the project failed they were completely thrown under the bus and sentenced to work on worthless Apps, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong March of the Minis shovelware.
Do you want to know why Metroid Federation Force is so shit? It's because the original team behind the DS version originally pitched their own 3DS prototype and Nintendo denied them the project and came out with the pile of shit Federation Force just to spite them.

What does a fresh programmer hired into a gaming company do? Do these companies use drag and drop programming rather than real text ones?
I applied to From Software about a year ago.
They never replied back and I would probably cringe hard if I ever read again the mail I sent them.
metroid prime hunters is shit tho
It's Nintendo of America, so you surely would be censoring games for American audiences.
Holy shit please post it
my nigga, post that shit, we need to see.
How do game designers who don't have any programming skills get hired?
It's my fantasy job but I gotta choose stability over it.
Bro, please post it, it can't be any worse than any professional email I've sent
Wait, Jap game companies hire people from other countries?
I have no GF, no money, no ties to anywhere and all my essential possessions can fit in a single medium sized suitcase. If ANY company in my field offered me a job I would take that shit in a heartbeat
Only if you can pass a level 1 language test (as in speak on the level of a native speaker).
Start programming your own stuff. If you don't have any ideas, just put the programming skills towards a fan game.
Good idea user, any ideas on what languages is worth learning?
python
Nice, I already know the basics on Python
I don't know that much about programming. I've only made some Game Maker sub par games and a Java game with help from a tutor. You could ask people who have good knowledge of programming games.
Ah okay user, thanks for your input though, this made me realize that I actually could get into my dream field if I work hard enough
What did this guy do? Explain please
>Working for the yakuza
No thank you.
In this day and age, anyone can make an indie game.
You're better off trying that.
C#
Java
C++
>Work low level job in a company closely affiliated with Nintendo.
>Can advance to a official Nintendo position in a few years.
>Quit job because it was shit and I lack any ambition at all.
>Turns out I can't get a job anywhere else.
>Masturbate and post on Sup Forums everyday since
l think I made the right choice
Ah okay user, I'll see into that. Any resources you can recommend for an absolute novice in these three languages?
>Java
>worth learning
Maybe just to cover your bases but most vidya or server related shit is in C and databases around where I am usually work with Python.
Because nintendo doesn't hire entry level.
Been trying for like a year now, I'm currently stuck in testing.
Sadly, no. I learned from a book and I couldn't tell you which book it was.
And I only know C# at the moment, but I'll be learning Java next month. Those languages will get you the farthest probably.
Because I live in Europe
And the gaming industry hates Europe
I don't want to work. Can I get free jewmonies by doing nothing instead?
Oh okay user, thanks for the advice, really appreciate it
That isn't the only thing that hates Europe ;^)
Its the only way you can legally live in Japan if you're a foreigner
That's mostly why I said it. It's extremely similar to the C languages so it's easy as fuck to learn as long as you aren't brain-dead.
Because I don't know how to program, but I would beta-test games. As long as they'll accept someone yelling about how shitty parts of their game is
Every article or book I have ever read about working in the games industry makes it sound like hell.
7am-10pm crunch time surrounded by autsists and now SJW's for a project that gets canned.
No problem. What language you need to know really depends on what you'll be going into. The C languages are the most used and versatile languages really.
Oh, okay. I know nothing about the status of the industry at the moment, so your insight is very valuable to me, thanks bro
Raptor will help you wrap your head around how code executes and the logic it follows but the java site has a tutorial for just about anything.
The books most colleges use are by Tony Gaddis and it'll teach you well. If you can get your hands on Eclipse, it's a program that will help with coding and it's a hell of a lot better than something like notepad+.
Learning it isn't the problem. Dealing with all the dumb shit in the language is.
Yes but that's beside the topic at hand
No problem, user.
I know barely anything so I've told you what little I know.
Eclipse, got it, thanks user
Just because I enjoy playing video games doesn't mean I enjoy making them.
For someone who doesn't know jack shit, that little goes a long way man
>Eclipse
>not Visual Studio
Had a couple friends from college work at games companies in QA, they've successfully convinced me that working twelve hour shifts on smoke tests and being on call all the time sucks ass.
I would rather stick with being a research chemist.
another user chiming in, here's a very good series about C programming from an Australian uni(mind the accents)
youtube.com
As for books, "the C programming language" by kerninghan and ritchie is one of the best books on C. ritchie, created the C programming language, so a good person to learn it from
hope this helps
I'm a system engineer in Argentina
you know, I wrote a long ass blog post but I deleted it, I tend to ragepost whenever the topic is touched
I'm only gonna say that working for another company leads to nothing
Whatever works. That's just the one I used to use.
Oh wow, you have no idea how much that helps. The only thing I can do is give my most sincere thanks user
Because my only creative talents are in writing/world building rather than art or programming.113
I try, user. I wish you good luck in all your future endeavors.
Because game dev is a meme, as is computer science. You'd think it'd be secluded and comfy but it's the exact opposite, these jobs are stressful as fuck and you don't even get paid that well.
You're better off running your own business and developing an indie game on the side for fun.
Thanks user, I really appreciate all your help, maybe this is the day I go from a basement dwelling NEET to an actual productive member of society, and if that happens, you had a big part in that
Believe in yourself, user. Break out of NEETdom.
t. A Non-NEET
>Wasting time in a techincal field
>When Qin and Pajeet will work just as hard for $2 an hour and never strike
?
They may work just as hard, but that doesn't mean they're good at their job.
Thanks user, you've been a real inspiration
Aside from the fact that they probably get a ton of applications a day which means they don't need you which means the job will suck dicks because they know they can easily replace you I don't want to work in anything related to video games. I've hated every job I ever had and I guarantee I would grow to hate video games too if it was my job. Video games are the last little slice of happiness I have.
Literally no company on earth gives a fuck about that. They have to pay an American 20$ an hour to do a job an Indian will do for 60 cents an hour with zero benefits.
I worked in the steel industry and almost all of the engineering we needed done to India even though they about ways did a shit job because they did it for pennies and worked 15 hours a day.
Oh. I was talking about programming, m8. Pajeet's code is broken and terrible.
>abysmal working hours, family and social life simply isn't an option
>mandatory unpaid overtime, 80+ hours a week to meet deadlines
>goalposts constantly changed by faceless suits causing years of work to be scrapped, often multiple times, before your product even sees the light of day
>if your game is even actually released you're just going to be laid off because it didn't sell well enough
>your skillset means your only choice is to try again with an even shittier company willing to hire failed rejects
Why?
Because I live in New Zealand and I don't like Path of Exile
There is this one programming channel for beginners on YouTube called Cave of Programming. It's good at least for me.
Every good job in the history of ever
fucking same cunt. has our country actually made any significant vidya release ever?
DayZ mod was pretty spectacular on release, and SpyHunter is one of my favourite PS2 titles.
smoke weed and jerk it
Because job security is nonexistent, the pay is generally poor and your employee benefits are garbage unless you're working for someone truly big like Rockstar, and even then expect to be working overtime like a motherfucker
If you have the skillset to work in game development you're far better off trying for other sectors of the software industry. Insurance/banking stuff is generally pretty stable in my experience
Honestly I would be surprised if everyone didn't go through my phases:
>be a kid
>i'm gonna work for videogames
>get into late teens
>see all the bullshit about EA, Activision, studio closures left and right after games are finished etc.
>Realise I've spent my academic career building towards something I don't want anymore
>get the fuck outta dodge
>end up working in software but nowhere near videogames
>can still enjoy vidya because I don't have to work on it every day
aerotek?
Programing, far more options.
