I think the saddest part is that we'll never know who actually made that animation. SNK had boiler rooms full of literal slaves hammering out art assets full time.

Because the amount of effort and manpower needed to create sprites of that quality on such a large scale is unreal, and always will be unreal.

This, and the fact that even with such genuinely gorgeous spritework, mainstream audiences would consider it "cheaper old-school graphics", despite the fact that these days it's way easier to make 3D models than it ever was to make high quality sprites.

Especially considering SNK's last batch of sprites involved creating 3D models as an early part of the process.

You don't just spend 2 hours following a youtube tutorial and be a master artist/animator. It takes decades at even 8 hours a day. For either.

The level of detail is awesome, I loved how in MS games there was always a lot happening in the backgrounds and several small details. Your character breath being visible in snow stages, the bullet cases being ejected from your gun, your characters reloading it.

Even in this picture, beautiful underwater background, amazing detail on the giant eel and they even went the trouble to give it a name.

Also, the death animations of those crab flying locusts you fight in the first stage where the stuff of gods.

When I played KOF13 i always had the feeling the sprites were converted from 3d into sprites, kind of like they did with diablo 2's sprites. The movement always seemed too... smooth for sprites.

Metal Slug was a big budget AAA title at the time, the one man indie devs aren't big budget AAA projects. 2D is more risky to make now than 3D due to cost (see skullgirls and kof12/13).

Modern devs don't want to work hard. Which is why AAA games have hyper inflated staff made up of mostly nu-males and nu-females and each member has to complete a tiny little job between their 9-5 job with the 4 breaks, 2 smoke breaks and 1.5 hour long lunch breaks. Plus laws not letting people work longer than 35 hours a week. That is if they're not on maternity leave or having emotional issues.

It would take effort. A fuckton of effort.

3D is literally so much easier than sprites its faster to make a 3D model and draw sprites over it than to make sprites
Its just not cost/time effective for what people expect these days. People will buy a gamewith sprites at 10/15 dollars but SNK level stuff is essentially a AAA production.
Street Fighter 3 almost ruined Capcom itcost so fucking much.

Because the average person literally has no eye for quality. There's no market for a pixel artist in games because dev companies realize this and instead they hire the cheapest shittest most "efficient" spriters possible for their indie games - or even better, they don't hire anyone at all and make the whole game out of programmer graphics and claim like it's a "style", it's "retro". Hence, all the 2D art in vidya is being done by people who probably don't know the first thing about visual design, and all the good 2D artists are drawing yiff shit on tumblr and deviantart to supplement their crappy income

I can kinda confirm this, one of my best friends is a graphic designer/art person and he always makes comments about graphic designs because well he is really into that field.

Then i realized how little i actually cared for graphics. Often times i only really noticed the quality of certain designs after he commented on it. I mean i could clearly see what he meant myself, i just what have never been involved enough to notice/care.

And what he said was mostly true. But i dont really care all that much if the game overall is good.

Most people dont really have an eye for it, so investing money into superp art is a waste from a business point of view.

It's any 2d render.
If you mean pixelart, say pixelart.

Because 3d is cheaper and easier than high quality pixel art.

Rotoscoped 3D models. It's a technique that's been used for a really long time. The original Prince of Persia was done like that, I think.
