It's the product of a development team with only artists and idea guys.

It's an ok game, but there's not really any reason to play it over Terraria.

Me and my best friend usually play Terraria but I saw he's playing this now so that's why I'm asking.

I just googled Starbound and grabbed this pic to make a thread.

Calm your tits.

Pirate it. It's not really worth your money when Terraria is better.

Can I play online with people who bought it?

Is multiplayer even implemented yet?

It's hard to get a general verdict because as the many threads after the game's release showed, a lot of people who complained about the game being barebones played little outside of the Alpha Build from December 2013; however, the best for a general consensus we can get is that it does extremely well for providing an atmosphere of exploration through sound design, elements of the art design like parallax and its lighting, and other details. It's still not a universal great game, as core complaints can be found in the design of the story and its bosses, but it's found a strong niche for players that enjoy exploring and building, and it's a niche that has been growing as more facets of the game are being discovered through exploring and progressing further.

It's a decent game now. Sup Forums says otherwise because they've been gargling Red's cock for ages. If you get burned out from Terraria like I have it's fun for a while.

...

I've been playing the latest version.
It's better, you know.
But while in Terraria you can focus on building, this one is more about exploring.
Although I'm at an early stage of the game, so I don't know. But I don't feel like I should build anything, nor have the interest in doing so.
Hunger is a issue in the game, there are some farming tools and animals that could be interesting to play with, but I haven't yet.
Also, there's some sort of "plot" to follow now.

>2014

tfw I reinstalled Terraria because the new Starbound update made me play it again.

What's a good way to keep one character's save up to date between two computers? Because Steam Cloud doesn't do shit.

i wrote an autistic long review about my thoughts on problems with the game's core.

check it out: steamcommunity.com/id/diggyboo/recommended/211820/

the long play time is me playing it through the updates to see if it got better. it has. but my issues with it stand.

People who rode the EA are salty as fuck over all the changes same for Terraria Autists.

But the game costs pocket change and will easily keep you busy for hours if you are fresh to it.

the monsters kill immersion for me
they look like fucking pokemon

>But while in Terraria you can focus on building, this one is more about exploring.

terraria is not remotely focused on building except for NPCs

>Autistic

Why? For leaving a review? Any "gaming company" would do a long review so what's the problem

yeah, you can hotjoin peoples singleplayers now also instead of setting up a server

Why is there a destroyed Face on the side of the big arch thingy
The others are supposed to be the playable races but whats with the broken/missing slot on the side

I think Starbound is more centered on building than you think. You can have colonies and pets and farming animals and there's an insane amount of unique decorative items to find

numales

idk, i just don't usually and write a paragraph for a game, let alone write one at all.

>Give money to people to make and infinite clone of a game
>They make an infinite clone of a game
>"It don't like it, I like things to be finite because that way I relate better to them, this is therefore a bad game"

kek

if you want a good verdict just wait until tweed makes a video on 1.0

It has some neat stuff but also some flaws.

Off the top of my head after 3 hours of playing
>neat that rain can water your crops
>sucks that vegetation doesn't spread or ever grow back
>rain in general is pretty sweet looking
>rope is cool
>hate the pokemon like monsters
>feels like the quests which I've discovered 30 minutes in the game kinda distract from the "man vs wild" exploration atmosphere, wouldve been neater if NPC encounters were a lot more rare and meaningful
>encounters with primitive tribes like the frog guys, or discovering ancient ruins/technology are fine though

I just want to feel more isolated, and fear for my life every time I encounter a new alien species, which is kinda hard when you can always teleport to a city hub and Bulbasaur comes knocking at your door.

people paid them to make a shitty game i guess

I despise the colony aspect.

I just want to live alone and make my mansion slowly get bigger and bigger. I don't want to feel compelled to fill every building up with some retard npc.

I guess I could rationalize them as being a serving class, but still.

that's just the deepest lore right there

>barely more than one paragraph
>hurr it's an autistic long review

You're not autistic, you're just an 11 year old with ADD.

My biggest problem with the rain in this game is that for some reason it doesn't properly detect when an area is roofed.

Like, I built a bigass house. On the top floors, near the roof, the roof would stop any rain falling down. But on the bottom floors, away from the roof, the game would simply forget such a thing as a roof exists at all so it would rain inside.

Shit's fucking retarded.

well, the last part's right.

We need to find all those 20 gems to unlock this thing right?

Just dig straight down. Eventually you'll end up in an area with lava and shit where those core gems are super common.

The extra face is either remnants of a race they were working on but then dropped, delayed.
or its meant to represent Races added through Mods since the game is supposed to apparently be extremely easily moddable and there is already a few modded Races on the Steam workshop including catpeople and Dolphinpeople.
Though speaking of mods I hope someone makes a lizard race that would be the bees knees

Survival difficulty was a mistake

>you need a special costume to unlock a "racial" ability which is extremely shitty and by the time you have the costume they're all useless
>read on forum posts that it's because the "creators did not want to make people believe that some races are better than others, and did not want their players to pick based on abilities"

Yeah because it's so fun to not be able to breathe underwater as a fish. All the shit they give as racials would really only have a time to shine in early game, because lategame everyone will have to use the same OP as shit armors ending up with the same stats and abilities.

yeah there is a shitton of retarded shit like that, I suppose thats what happens when your Dev Team consists of 8 Artist Ideaguys and 2 actual Coders which get payed like half of what the 'artists' do.

luckilly there is a mod that fixes that though for some ass retarded reseason the modder Decided to Make it rely on his Other mod that adds fucktons of useless Bloat Ore making finding simple shit like Copper and Iron in the first world hard as fuck to do

I heard there's also a cave on the planet with starter equipment and gems in a chest.

Yep, the mineshaft gives you everything you need for early starting. really, plenty of, copper, iron, core fragments, pickaxes, bombs medkits.

I preferred the Build just before 1.0, the hotbar is supper shitty,
I don't like that inventory in the hotbar is still in the main inventory slots, makes sorting annoying.
the torch and platforms are 2 handed placements, taking up 4 slots of hotbar, thats basically half of the bar gone for 2 essential items. the old way was just better.
They brought back pickaxes but cant craft them.
Hunger element but food doesn't stack and eventually rots, which also doesn't stack.
the 5? types of inventory types are quite nice, and being able to just teleport to the outpost is great,
still not found a good gun, the ones I made are pretty shitty and the tier 1 is better than the tier 2 version because of automatic rifle does more dps than a shotgun that rinses energy

Getting good weapons is pure RNG, everything you craft is garbage compared to found weapons, and found weapons are always just the "right" strength for their world, never stronger.

Getting good armor is pure grind, the only source is mining out each planet's special brand of mineral to make the next incremental armor upgrade that lets you go to the next planet to repeat the process.

Everything is gated, you MUST complete one type of planet to get the materials that let you venture to the next type of planet, where you repeat the exact same process. The quests are largely either generic fetch quests or extremely repetitive "talk to jack and then build us a new house" types, with the main quest being full of boring and lengthy scanning segments.

Weapons and armor give no true unique effects, they're mostly carbon copies of earlier weapons/armor but with slightly better stats. There's only a few types of each weapon, such as a sword that lets you teleport sideways a short ways or launch a small projectile from it. There are few if any unique set bonuses in the game, armor is just for stats and never utility.

All in all, compared to Terraria this game has very little unique content. Monsters are interchangeable, forgettable, and unrewarding. Biomes are likewise interchangeable, they may look different but few have unique loot or unique hazards beyond the generic planet-type hazard. Crafting is unfulfilling, aside from the mandatory upgrades to advance to the next planet type everything is a boring stat stick or a decorative item. There is only one path to everything, and it always follows the same pattern. You don't really have much of a choice as to how you progress.

I currently have about 40 hours in the release version, playing it almost constantly with a friend who's desperate for it to be good after buying it for both of us years ago. So far all it does is make me want to play Terraria, an infinitely more rewarding game.

Terraria is a better game, this has better exploration and autism building. I'm having fun, but part of it is that I haven't touched the game since the initial EA release so it's all new to me still.

Build the flag from your own characters crafting menu, it lets you teleport to it whenever you want.

It seems a lot better now but it seems I have lost the patience to play games like this.

I'm the opposite, I love the NPC aspect. Helps separate it from Terraria and gives a slightly different feel to the game.

Odd, my colony is inside a gigantic house like that and it doesn't happen to me. You sure you didn't miss any foreground roof tiles or leave holes in the background?

can i ride around in a giant tank that can drill through mountains?

Except if you prefer sci fi over a virgin genre like fantasy. Keep masturbating cuck

>snek
>plant face
fuck off you retard you shat up the /tg/ general for fucking ages i hope you fucking die

How to have fun with Starbound:
>Console command yourself the gear and ship upgrades that you desire so you don't have to grind
>Spend hours autistically decorating your ship and building stuff
>Get comfy and explore a few dozen different planets to find all the interesting biomes and fight some mini bosses
>Rinse and repeat until you've had your fill

Played this way, Starbound is a comfy, simple, pleasant 10-20 hour experience that makes you feel like a real sci-fi space explorer going on an adventure. No ore mining, no shitty fetch quests, no upgrades being locked behind high levels, etc. It's just a fun nice time where you can build, explore, and roleplay. The more autistic you are, the better the experience is.

>magical teleporting becomes molecular teleporting
>both have guns
>both have laser guns and laser swords
>one has "monsters" the other has "aliens"

It's the same shit nigga.

I think it's a good game, but Terraria is still superior. I'm playing it just because I want to play a "Terraria game", since I've spent 1000+hours on Terraria and there's literally nothing left to do.

Controls like shit
Combat is shit
Exploration is shit
Quests are shit
UI is shit
Building is okay
Graphics are okay
Soundtrack is okay

A solid 5/10

In that case people who say Terraria is better than Starbound are wrong
And that still doesn't change the fact that people have different taste when it comes to fantasy and sci fi

Hello starbound dev

How is that you still post this after this game being a fucking joke?

>decline button is on the left and accept button is on the right

What monkey designed this shit?

i like it. would prefer if there were less/no story elements in it.

How many of these threads have to go up before the mods realize they only exist for shitposting and start deleting them?

>still no Sup Forums server to colonize a planet together and build a Sup Forumsase

you already got our money starbound dev, why must you torment us so much?

there also fantasy themes in starbound so the cuck would be you lol

that sounds like a good idea, I would be on board

I need to somehow get my money worth

>at one point every race was going to have their own unique start
>at one point every race had their own unique looking Ship AI but it was removed because ???
>at one point they every Race even had their own unique starting weapons but it was removed because ???
>Instead they got the Humans start and shit slapped onto them

Why is the game called star bound when 90% of the game takes place on a planet with you performing shit side quests?

Why ate there literally no random events in space?

Why are there no ship to ship battles?

Why are there no pirates/space cope/military ships you can run into?

Why are there no derelict vessels?

WHY DOES LITERALLY NONE OF THIS GAME TAKE PLACE IN FUCKING SPACE?

>alpha comes out
>first_day_torrent.jpg
>damn this isn't half bad gonna actually buy it
>rip 15 $$$
>have fun with /vg/
>patch hits and wipes
>new changes are shit and make the game unfun

Fast forward today
>it got even worse
>game and progression is boring and a chore
>no late game
>no cool mobility techs
>muh vehicles and farming

FUCK this Game tbf

The waifus and the porn are better than the ones from terraria.

Technically, we're in space.
