Can anyone build a decent gaming laptop for $600 or less?

A website that lets you piece together your own laptop. I don't know much about this.

Just save for a bit longer- you'll get a pc that will be more powerful for the money, and also have a much longer lifespan.

And unless you want to run 4k, you really wont need to spend any more than 1k on your pc. It will do just fine with modern games.

Yes.
The same rules apply to laptops as desktop PCs. For gaming, a strong, dedicated GPU with its own VRAM is a must. A relatively fast (>2Ghz) multi-core CPU and at least 6GB RAM help a lot too.

>gaming
>laptop
m8...

you can build a mad decent minesweeper comp for 300$

aaand here comes the parotters...

the "gaming laptop" meme is really getting to me...

There is no meme

Gaming laptops are worse than consoles

Yeah, shame on me for falling after that obvious bait.

>gaming laptop
take it from me, I spent $1500+ on a Lenovo Y50-70 and while it's a decent laptop, I completely regret getting it when I could've spent the same amount of money on a great desktop and a laptop for school. Plus I've heard of these laptops having problems. Like my 960M won't get new drivers even though I have Nvidia programs to get them. My laptop is fucked up at some degree and I take really good care of my laptop and I've only had it for a year. I'd sell it but I might as well keep it as this point as I save up to build something much better

And you can't find a good gaming laptop for less than 900 since the price for parts go up since you want convenience of a laptop with the power of a desktop

the pic is from a while back but it's the laptop I use

Can you buy a gaming laptop for the same price as an of equal quality desktop?

>inb4 no response because you already got a (You) for your memeing anyway

Except or the specific use cases where they're nice.

Some people don't like dragging their rig everywhere but still want to game. Highschoolers with divorced parents, mechanical engineers who want to be able to work at least a little on the go, college students who live an awkward distance from their home town, etc.

this was the best I could do on pcspecialist. At least before taxes, it's below 600.

>spent $1500+
That's your mistake. You can get great gaming-capable laptops for less than 900 bucks nowadays.

I've been using a 2009-model ASUS ROG laptop for 6 years now, and it's still running strong. I've seen people get i7 + 960M machines for around 650 bucks recently.

The equivalent equipment in a laptop is more expensive for the benefit of being small/easier portability.
That's it.

Yeah, fair enough. Still, unless you frequently travel, there's very little reason to game on a laptop.

>Gaming laptops are worse than consoles
How to spot a literal Sonygger shill.

No, but that's not the point.
You pay for the form-factor. You can, however, greatly reduce the extra costs by not buying expensive brand pre-builds.

>Except or the specific use cases where they're nice.
One of my bros used to have that kind of job. He spend the week and some weekends in hotels, so he bough a good laptop and always booked hotels with decent wifi.

But these kind of people aren't limited to $600 budged.

The advantage of PCs over consoles is sheer power, and customization. Laptops have none of that.

Is this ok for light gaming?

No, 600 is a decent midrange desktop. To have a laptop able to comfortably play current and near future(2-3 years) games you'd need to spend a lot more.

While that's true, I don't see how there's any value in those things if most people are likely to be gaming in their own homes anyway.

People with gaming laptops: is playing games outside your home enough of a frequent occurrence to justify the cost?

>$1500
>a fucking 960
>mobile
good god, man

We had this exact thread last week, OP. Same picture and everything. Didn't you read any of the replies it got last time?

>People with gaming laptops: is playing games outside your home enough of a frequent occurrence to justify the cost?
This is literally the most inportant question here. If you can't confidently answer yes, then don't even think about getting a gaming laptop.

I like to post this comment in random threads too

>gaming laptop

>""""""""gaming""""""""" laptop

>no playing vidya while camping gyms
Fucking casuals.

The main advantage of computers in general is the absolutely dominating gaming library, chance of tweaking your games via settings and mods, notably cheaper games, lack of "generations", emulation of console-games, and the fact that they double as the ultimate multimedia and work tools.

I can still do majority of these on my 4 years old Packard Bell craptop, which costed me mere 399€ in early 2012.

...

You must be new here. You see we all post exclusively because we want (You)'s, even if it means we have to shitpost frequently enough to cover multiple timezones. The quality of this board nor the consideration of original content matters when there are (You)'s on the line.

>fist reply is literally ">gaming laptop"
Based Sup Forums.

It's correct though. Compress components into a small space and they will overheat and underperform as a direct consequence. They are always more expensive, never provide a satisfying result and break within a few years tops.

Lol this is great who is this haha

>sheer power,
yeah, because 400 buck toy machines running on 5 years old mobile components are sooo much better option!
>and customization
You can add more RAM and new HDD to just about any non-Apple laptop. Some variants even allow swapping the CPU; I did that to my Asus I mentioned earlier, going from mere 2Ghz dual-core processor, to a 2.8Ghz variant, significantly expanding its service life.

Meanwhile, on a console, you're stuck with the stock specs until the end of its life. And now Sony's even pushing out a new version of their machine because PS4 was obsolete already upon arrival.

Add to that the 80$ games, paid online, and cost of all the potential extra accessories and services you may end up needing, and you soon got yourself a sub-1000 $ livingroom toy, that cannot even run prev-gen games you may own, nor can you mod or tweak anything either.

Negative. You just need to avoid shitty manufacturers, and actually keep good care of your machine. Thanks to laptops, I've actually started cleaning more systematically, started paying attention to collecting dust inside PCs, and even started applying new thermal paste on my CPU and GPU every few years.

What comes to performance, the said Asus laptop is NOW becoming obsolete with its 4GB RAM limit on mobo, but it still can run games like STALKER smoothly on DX10 mode at 1440x900 res, with forced 2x AA, using tons of mods.

I travel for work often enough and I'm absolutely willing to drop $700-$800 on a laptop to game on while not at home. I have enough downtime while I'm away that I can at least get some solid time in to catch up on games.

Get the fuck off this board

Lets make a paper thin piece of plastic and shove a top of the line CPU into it, with no air circulation. Now let's add a lithium battery. Then we're going to add a modern day CPU. After all of that, we are going to run it for hours!

>can't emulate pc games from past os
What is Virtual Machine & DosBox ?
> can't play CD/dvd roms from older pc games
why couldn't I? There's also numerous fan-patches, source-ports, etc, to help ya achieve that.
>3d consoles still don't emulate well especially sound
bullshit. I've been emulating shit like PS1 and N64 games for a good decade. PS2 and GC/Wii are also pretty damn good already, and DS is viable too.
>most roms are horrible preserved especially Saturn.
Who the hell cares about Saturn anyway? Also, the actually important games have at least half a dozen different rips usually, and tend to work OK to perfect.
>pc tards think upscaling and overclocking emulators as a viable option
they are. Though, I personally choose up-CONVERTING.

>Who the hell cares about Saturn anyway?

>build
>laptop

in gaming laptops is better to play at 720p, does that site has 720p monitors?

gb2/being dead, Sanshiro.

yup, on lower-end models. Seems like most manufacturers have started opting for 1080p screens nowadays though, since even phones have 4K screens these days.

I agree with you tho'. Got an Asus G70J with 1080p screen, and I set it to 900p. The full-HD made everything a bit too tiny to my tastes, not to mention it helped performance. Since the pixel density was so tiny, there wasn't even notable increase of aliasing.

A few things:
DIY Laptops are shit
You'll need to spend a lot more than 600 to get a decent gaming laptop
Plan on spending 1000+

Also
>gaming laptop

You're better off building a decent PC then getting a chromebook or something for when you need to have something portable.

I gamed in local lans for 2 years on a laptop.
They overheat like crazy so unless you don't care about cooking parts your probably looking at around $2500- $3000 US for anything quality.

OP here: Just scored this i7 960M Acer for $560. WITH free shipping.

>after segata died the world was filled by casuals playing pokemon games in their phones
I'm out.

>gb2/being dead, Sanshiro.
Wait, Kamen Rider 1 passed away for real?

That's pretty fucking good deal, to be perfectly honest bro. The thing would do just great on 1080p, and simply superb if you limit yourself to 768-900p, not to mention 720p.

Get a Thinkpad X230, a PCI-E to Expresscard adapter, a power supply, and a GPU of your choice with the remaining $400

>le gaming laptop meme

ah, this meme never gets old.

>mechanical engineers who want to be able to work at least a little on the go
That's what workstation laptops are for.

They're lighter, cooler, and have way more battery than gaming laptop memes do

>using gpus with laptops

Holy fuck this is a thing?

Then you're better off getting a setup like this A GPU and a PSU are perfectly viable for carrying around in those situations, unless you need to game in class or on the bus or whatever the fuck, it's way faster and way cheaper than a gaymen laptop

What an ugly black box.

>make a subpar product
>attach the word "gaming" to it
>??????????
>profit!

I mean shit you can probably run video games decently on one of these things even

There's literally no reason to get a gaymen laptop when business workstation laptops with Quadros exist that are way better designed and far more durable

Um, yes, laptops could not render video output at all without gpu...

>gaming on quadros

>gaming at all

>gayming

No.
The straight answers is "no". Also, as many have said

>laptop
You would want a home battlestation, but a good one is $900-1200. Same if you build one yourself, but if you use used parts, be aware that they don't have warranties.
If you MUST game on the go and get a laptop, I guess you could cop out and get an Alienware. But you're paying for brand name, so expect like 900 dollary doos.

>gaming on laptops
Please don't, my roommate has one of those chunky ass alienwares and it sounds like a fucking concorde when he boots up League

Just get the entry level Clevo (or one of its many rebadges) with the i7-6700HQ, GTX 960m and 1080p IPS display.

Alternatively the Dell Inspiron 15-7559 is decent, although it has an inferior display.

Gee bill, why does your mom let you have 2 cpu's

This. I use a laptop and do not have a desktop at all.
Its the most preferable option simply because I haven't moved out yet and there is literally no room for a desk I can put a computer on and sit confortably at.

Do you live in a room like this? How much garbage do you have laying around that you can't fit a couple feet of PC in, or even an egpu setup?

I'm going abroad for quite some time and can't take my desktop. Thinking about getting something very cheap to play really old stuff, like old fallouts or Homm 3. Should I get an used (need to be stressed, quite USED) old laptop with early i3 like a thinkpad or something or maybe a brand new win 10 tablet? The price is similar

I really don't have any garbage lying around. Just a good deal of furniture and a huge bed.

Is this a good buy?

kys

Something like that is acceptable, it shouldn't be hideously expensive but still powerful enough for standard gaming and somewhat carryable.

Anything that is labeled as "For Gamers™" is gonna be overpriced.

Do I need a second monitor or can I just output the external GPU onto my laptop monitor?

Depends on whether the laptop in question has Nvidia Optimus or not

I believe the X230 does, if not, a T430 with an Nvidia NVS built in will for sure

>gaming
>laptop
Pick exactly one

>gaming
>laptop

You guys did remember to put sage in the email field right?

But "sage" isn't my mail address :^)

>mfw fell for the gaymen laptop meme and just trying to make-do with what I have
At least I can shitpost with it though

>tfw 2.5 years later still enjoying games on my laptop
>it weighs next to nothing and I can take it wherever
>its still right there ready to go moving place to place, country to country

I'm looking forward to settling down and having a desktop again, but I could not have survived without this little beast.

So can anyone tell me what is a good laptop that isn't shit and will be able to play games like wow and runescape on ultra detail while also running photoshop snd whatnot?

Thanks for remind me to AGE this thread, just to piss off anti-laptop memesters like you. :^)))

I'm happy for you, bro.
I've had a desktop for over a decade, and only got my first laptop during the turn of the decade. All my relatives and friends live far away, and I was also doing University studies up until recently, so a strong laptop was a god-sent item. It also allowed me and my buds to hold up good ol' LAN parties at our places, without having to drag 10+ kg worth of IT with us.

I pick what ever the hell I want, and that is gaming on a laptop.

Exactly, LANs are great fun.

If you have a group of friends to that regularly with, that by itself is enough reason to buy a laptop imo.

true that. I'm also pretty privileged in the matter that I've never paid over 500 bucks for my laptop(s). Also, when I'm back at home, the laptop tends to work as my living room's "media-PC", through which I can watch crap on my big screen, and play some lighter vidya with a gamepad, like it was a console.

My home is a tax haven so when I order from the UK/Europe I get to take 20-30% of the price tag off. Its wonderful

Not a shit-tier plastic gayming laptop

See You can have your lan parties with far better laptops than the shit they make for gamers

>ebin
>:^)))
>friends
>kg
>parties
I fuckin hate you so much

I never said to buy a cheap one, but you definitely could get away with it.

Almost all good LAN games are 10+ years old or run on toasters anyway

You don't have friends because you sperg out like this

It's more that you need a computer you can take places and have a pc for gaming too. Cheaper to do it this way than buy a desktop and monitor + decent laptop

eh, seems a bit dodgy.
I paid mere 400€ for my Asus ROG G60VX back in 2010, and it has stuff like Source-games, Dead Rising 2, Red Orchestra & Killing Floor...etc, just great.

gaymeme

I spilled water on my old laptop and fucked the battery. it was a piece of shit so I want to replace it, but I'm poor and can't spend much money on it. what's the cheapest thing I can get that meets the following criteria?

>weighs less than 6lbs
>battery lasts at least 2 hours at full power use
>will run psp emulator

Guess it's a crapshoot, my friend has a ROG that just one day refused to turn on anymore

If you want it to survive spilled water, get a Thinkpad, it has dedicated drainage holes in the keyboard to avoid any laptop components

>>battery lasts at least 2 hours at full power use
Wow, you've really been cucked by gaming laptops in the past

A Thinkpad X220 weighs like 3 pounds, and will last 9 hours on full battery and will run PSP emulators with no sweat

pretty much any 400 dollar laptop these days will do all of those things. Laptops are getting lighter unless you get a gaming one

>battery lasts at least 2 hours at full power use
Literally any non-gaming laptop will do this
