What went so horribly wrong with the Yoshi games after Yoshi Island? Why did Nintendo believed upping the baby-related stuff was a good idea when that aesthetic was not as prominent in Yoshis Island as it is in Yoshi Story?

I wouldn't say Story is all kiddy stuff, some levels are kinda dark and eery and the whole premise of souless zombie yoshis and the emotion based game doesn't feel like baby stuff. (game's also hard if you're playing all melons runs).
Maybe after Tupsy Torvy the games went full childish

They definitely upped the aesthetic, tho. Making it childish on the surface and being dark once you get into the game ain't good design.

I feel like is more of the "dont judge something by it's cover" thing.
I think the game has a good mix of cuteness and darkness that mix well with it's arcade-like gameplay

Did you not like Woolly world? I have only played the first Yoshi's Island and Woolly world and I enjoyed both pretty well. Can't speak for the games that are considered mediocre or hated, but I at least think the newest may redeem them to some extent
