I have 10 dollars on Steam, do I get Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas?

I have 10 dollars on Steam, do I get Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas?

What are the pros and cons of each?

Get New Vegas Ultimate:
pros: it respects the lore the franchise stablished previously, and is a good rpg game.
cons: bethesda's shitty engine

Avoid Fallout 3:
pros:none
cons: rapes the old lore, is a bland and boring game, an even worse rpg, bethesda's shitty engine, story and characters.

Get both! But, uh, don't bother playing New Vegas.

Fallout 3 pros: your dad is voiced by Liam Neeson.
New Vegas pros: it's actually a good game.

...

New Vegas-

Pros: Good story line, fantastic combat and weapon selection, more interesting characters, better all round atmosphere, better open world environment, interesting choices and multiple fulfilling endings, fantastic mod incorporation that fix what Obsidian couldn't do, fantastic DLC with a bunch of variation.

Cons: Looks very old (which can be fixed by mods), Legion is a bit unfinished (which can be fixed by mods), can't have Joshua Graham or Ulysses as a companion (which can be fixed by mods).

Fallout 3-

Pros: Ghoul Mask which allows you to avoid ghoul attacks, Double Barrel shotgun which New Vegas doesn't have (unless you use mods), decent mod incorporation that fixes what Bethesda should have done.

Cons: The exact opposite of what the Pros of New Vegas are, along with all the Cons of New Vegas. Boring story line, terrible combat and weapon selection, less interesting characters, shit atmosphere and open world environment, no choices and one unfulfilling ending, terrible DLC with limited variation, looks very old (which can't really be fixed by mods, still looks like trash), no Legion, can't have Joshua Graham or Ulysses as a companion (which can't be fixed by mods), companions are boring and make me want to shoot myself.

I like 3 it isn't perfect but it's leagues better than 4, I can at least role play after the vault .

In 4 can't do that because it's just yes, yes, sarcastic yes,and no. I like 3 because it's a fun game and I guess I'm in the minority. 4 has enjoyable gunplay but at the cost of role playing. I see why games keep silent protags because you can self insert/imagine what they sound like instead of being monotone fuckwit.

If you're on Windows 7, FO3 won't even work, so take that into consideration.

The one advantage I think FO3 has is that it's better for aimless dungeon crawling. Pretty much everything in NV is connected to a plot or quest, and sometimes it's fun to just go to a dungeon and kill things for no particular reason.

>Fallout 3
Pros:

>D.C is a pretty swank location

>Interesting side quests to do

>Liberty fucking Prime

And that's all actually.

Cons:

>Weapon balance is pretty bad, a revolver you find in the beginning does about 6 damage, somehow lower than the 10mm given to you.

>Lore is shit on one way or another.

>More than a few plot holes in there.

>Companions can just die at the drop of a Yao Gui.

>The 'karmic choices' are as simple as 'kill this guy' and 'don't kill this guy and give you a lot of your hard earned stuff'

>New Vegas
Pros:

>pretty swank crafting

>Story is pretty good, though a little overrated.

>Plenty of stuff to keep you busy, though some side quests can get unimpressive.

>Companions got a soul to them.

Cons:

>desert gets boring as shit, my man.

>BEARANDBULLBEARANDBULLBEARANDBULL

>The Legion is missing too much content, and are basically just rapists playing dress up compared to what was planned

I'd say New Vegas honestly, unless you want to dick around. Get any of them if you don't care about lore and actual roleplaying.

>Get any of them if you don't care about lore and actual roleplaying.
Even if you just want to shoot stuff in post-apo America, Vegas has more stuff to shoot and more stuff to shoot at.

>Isn't perfect

Far from it

>;eagues better than 4

Won't even argue this. Please give reasons at least.

>I can toleplay after the vault

Roleplay what? Finding your dad? Being a dirty wasteland commoner? Being a dirty bomb worshipper? Fallout 4 has all that and much more (excluding your dad, it's your son instead)

>yes,yes,sarcastic yes,and no

What else d you need? That's literally what it is in both New Vegas and 3 but without skill checks. At least you get a voice this time, which I think is a plus.

>Keep silent protags

I agree, Nate and Nora weren't the best choices, they should have had more than 1 choice for each sex.

Hey, by all means, you are free to enjoy mediocre games. I'm nobody to stop that.

In all seriousness, tho, it's cool. I just couldn't stand how the game wanted me to lower my standards regarding to the lore and gameplay to even begin to enjoy it. To each their own. Even if you are in the minority, don't let anyone stop you from enjoying something if you truly do

>This
also fallout new vegas is better for role play since you arent given a lot of background that affects your builds

At least until Lonesome Road decides to make you listen to hours of incoherent, rambling monologues about your supposed past.

>you arent given a lot of background that affects your builds
Yeah the RPG stuff in 3 always seemed a little shoehorned in, like it expected you to be a copy of your dad despite the choices you make about your skills. My headcannon was always that Liam Neeson got cucked by some dude and the player character was his child.

>Lonesome Road
Never fucked with that DLC only OWB. I did hear that they decided to give some background which is shit.
Ruined it's replay value for me.

None, both are shit.

[the Bad]

FO3:
story its complete shit.
Dialogues are complete shit.
your decisions doesn't matter.
all DLC are complete garbage

New vegas(even after unofficial patches applied):
its bugged, prepare to use the console to fix a lot of shit.
CTD every 15 mins, even if its the same engine than FO3
the first half of the game its linear as fuck as the game forces you to follow a path, because the other roads are full of enemies 10-15 levels above you.
the world map design its complete garbage, 1/7 of the map its an empty go kart track, just that.
the metro map its a straight line.
has less locations than FO3, but hides it with a lot of filler map locations like "attacked caravan 1-4" "NCR radio tower 1-9"
pushes the "gray morality" too much that its ridiculous, at some point it tries to sell you that caesar“ legion are the good guys.

[the Good]

FO3:
great world design with lots of details
a metro system that is not a straight line.

NV:
good dialogues and somewhat good story.
weapon costumizations.
differen types of ammunition.
2 of the DLCs are actually better than the main story.

this is how a deluded obsidrone looks like.

>I did hear that they decided to give some background which is shit.
They do reference events in the past, but the character referencing them is an crazy autist, so you can basically ignore it if you want.
Honestly Ulysses gets a bad rap for all his rambling. It's 90% bullshit and 10% autism, but that's sort of the point of his character and his arc.

I recommend doing the other DLCs, they're all above average for dlc, and most of them will give you at least something that you like even if you hate the main theme of it.

You can deny the backstory in LR and call Ulysses a lying cunt

>NV
>better open world environment
stopped reading there.

>has less locations than FO3, but hides it with a lot of filler map locations like "attacked caravan 1-4" "NCR radio tower 1-9"
>pushes the "gray morality" too much that its ridiculous, at some point it tries to sell you that caesar“ legion are the good guys.
kek

>weapon costumizations
reminds me of that anime with guns /k/ liked

>the first half of the game its linear as fuck as the game forces you to follow a path, because the other roads are full of enemies 10-15 levels above you.
Sounds like you need to git gud

Also the linearity is pretty great from a storytelling perspective because it allows for a paced introduction the world and the factions without totally stripping away player freedom (a la fallout 3)

I don't even look for dad til I do everything else. I'm playing 4 it's fun but it doesn't have the same heart in it. I do fuck over everyone and you can at least be neutral or whatever in 4 you have to pick sides I guess in 3 you do also but not as big until end game.

I love cheese and I don't give a fuck so 3 is fine with me. 4 ruins the lore more than 3 but not much I can do about it.

NV is the best of the three games and I don't really care to explain myself I just enjoy myself regardless.

fallout 3 is the game you want if you value exploration and combat over story and characters. not to say that the combat is better than new vegas, but enemy encounters are much more frequent compared to the relatively empty mojave desert. new vegas is the one you want if you're looking for an interesting storyline with lots of different endings. and though i said fallout 3 has better exploration, the vaults in new vegas are much creepier and better to explore. aside from the vaults, and a handful of other locations, new vegas is sorely lacking in the exploration department. most locations in new vegas only take about five minutes to fully explore, if that.

>GARY, GARRRRY, GAAAAAAARRRRRRRY!

>I did hear that they decided to give some background which is shit.
All it says is that the Courier delivered packages in NCR, and at least a couple to the location LR is set in. Autists like to say it added a big backstory, but it really didn't

I enjoyed bother, but i never played the first 2, i just read the story and lore on their wiki and tv tropes since i thought id never get to play them anyway and thought it was interesting.
>played both on console so have no opinion on mods
>new vegas is objectively better.
The only reason to like 3 is if its your first fallout game and you have no standard for it

the choice is kinda obvious

Play 3 first, because NV will spoil it for you. You will enjoy both like that.

>played both on console so have no opinion on mods
Mods add some much where they fell short. I remember enjoying mods for NV over 3.

In all seriousness, play Fallout 3 first. New Vegas has so many marked improvements over it besides a few subjective things (namely the radio and some exploration) that it's kind of crazy how much better New Vegas is.

People say this a lot, but playing 3 all the locations are boring as shit. It's like in skyrim, where there's nothing worth exploring for, no interesting stories in the vast majority of locations, and since there's only three art sets you see the same thing over and over again.
NV had more locations, and any locations that weren't tied to the main quest usually have a unique weapon to find (or at least a snowglobe or magazine), and all the bigger "dungeons" have interesting stories attached to them.

But Caesars Legion are the good guys? They want to btfo the dirty corrupted government and stop "tribes" existing. They're unfinished, but using mods fixes them.

>FO3: great world design

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

FNV isn't even buggy, your PC is probably just shit, and suing the console is fine. The first half of the game is easy to explore if you're not fucking shit, going through the canyon with all the Deathclaws is the only hard bit and even then it can be done easilly with a few Stealth Boys. The world design is perfectly fine if you're not palying on fucking easy where no enemies spawn, and it certainly looks much better than FO3/ Its locations are actually interesting, apposed to "le big building full of bad raiders XD" everywhere. The gray mortality needs to be pushed so that it doesn't end up as a train wreck like FO3 was after the karma system.

>because NV will spoil it for you.
care to elaborate how? I do not remember anything at all significant being referenced from 3's storyline at all. NV literally makes a lot canon decisions for Fallout 2 if anything

Buy New Vegas and download Tales of Two Wastelands

I mean, gameplay wise user. NV was an overall gameplay improvement from 3, but you can certainly enjoy 3 if you haven't yet tasted NV.

I agree, and New Vegas had a sense of realism and structure in terms of map design, with most of the locations clustered around the city itself and radiating outwards. And even if you're not exploring every location on your own, most of them have quests that take you there anyway.

Not spoil as in spoilers, but spoil as is "make you not like the game as much"

So you like big green sky and 100's of broken buildings with nothing but super mutants and raiders? Fuck off Todd, nobody likes your games.

Fallout 3 is the game you want if you like a big empty world of nothing but shit textures and bad atmosphere where the combat is utterly terrible.

just pirate both

I just cut through Neil's Shack and stay right as possible going through Sloan.

Watch your head and you'll be golden.

This. Don't waste your money on FO3 but still play it using the mod.

Exactly, it's not even a difficult thing to do. He's probably just literally shit.

Get New Vegas with your 10, pirate the DLCs.
Don't wait till you're a super high level character to play the DLCs, enemies will scale and beat your ass especially in OWB.

what mods make legion less unfinished?

Quite of bit of legion overhaul mods on the nexus, I remember seeing some that added more outposts on the eastern side of the map.

new vegas has more locations because they marked a lot of tiny places that probably didn't deserve to be marked, like prospector camps, powder ganger camps, cisterns, and small shacks. out of the 187 locations in the vanilla game i would say maybe 70 of them are worth your time. whereas in fallout 3 you will find large office buildings and factories scattered across the landscape with heavy hostile presence. you may think they were boring but i had a lot of fun exploring places like the arlington cemetery, dunwich building, old olney, mama dolce's etc. also there are large raider strongholds like the bethesda ruins and evergreen mills, there's nothing of that scale in new vegas.

You need to have FO3 to use Tale of Two Wastelands.

The Deathclaws all stay in and around the quarry, retard. Just stay on the right side of the damn road and sneak by.

As for the Cazadores, seriously just git gud. Shoot their wings, use the goddamn grenade launcher that you can potentially start the game with, sneak.

Meant to reply to

>use the goddamn grenade launcher
YOU need to git gud.
that fucking shit its OP at the beginning, only a faggot will use it.

and you need a legit copy for ttw to work

Oh, I never knew. I never bothered with the mod because FO3 is shit. Go figure though.

What said basically, there's one of the top mods on the Nexus called Caesars regime that redoes their armor, spawn points, locations and all that shit. There's one that has post game content with Caesar moving to the Hoover Dam and having him put his throne on top of it like a sick cunt.. There's a bunch of them if you just look.

Also what this user said, the game is pretty balanced enemy wise, and Cazadors are annoying but easy to kill if you immobilise them.

Arlington Cemetery is empty apart from Junder Plunkett and the snack cake factory.

I miss when Ghouls looked like leprosy zombies. 4 they just look plastic gotta find a mod for 4 that changes that.

I'm pretty sure that's actually not true. They say that to cover their asses, but a pirated copy will work fine.

What if I'm playing a melee idiot? I want to keep to my style as much as possible.

na they have some shit to check for if it's legit and it terminates if it doesn't.

There is no way around it.

Better stock up on them snakebite tourniquets cause poison is powerful as fuck

Melee is literally the most viable play style in the game.

Get both and get TTW (Tale of Two Wastelands)

Best of both worlds, then mod the shit out of it.

energy weapon based crit build is the best playstyle, with laser commander and all of the relevant crit perks it makes the game boringly easy. if you play melee there's no way of killing cazadors without taking damage.

>There is no way around it.

It's just a simple hash check that is very poorly implemented. It has no clue if the version is legit or not, it just looks for difference from their own version and assumes any that it finds is a crack.

Don't install the redundant crack and you have just gotten around their check.

I guess I need to get good but stealth sucks at daytime.

Get New Vegas, it's a great cowboy game.

I haven't played Fallout 3 since it crashed in the initial vault. That isn't to say that New Vegas isn't also a buggy crash every few mintues game too.

Modded FNV stability really depends. I run it on a pretty crappy machine with some anti-crash mods and it seems pretty stable to me. Few crashes here and there, but I can run it for hours without slowdowns or bugs, alt-tab in and out etc.

Does anyone have an image showing everything FO3 got wrong in terms of lore?

I would genuinely like to see this myself. I only know about aliens and the jet shit in 4.

I don't really give a fuck what happened in pre war, I just care for what happens in the "present".

I'll kill myself soon...

This thing? It's more about shitty writing in general than it is about lore.

Fuck it I'm just going to dump all the caps I have of shit Bethesda did wrong.

...

FO3 wont run on windows
saved you 10$

...

>pushes the "gray morality" too much that its ridiculous

I agree with this, especially after I read they changed plotlines so the factions would be more "morally grey."

...

...

fo3 has no reason to exist now that 4 is out

Get NV

...

>Caesars regime

It's shit. The majority of the added armor looks really bad by design, and they ruined Lanius' perfect outfit.

...

...

>great world design with lots of details

Disagree, its barely above Oblivion. Even 4 did it better with lots of verticality

>the first half of the game its linear as fuck as the game forces you to follow a path, because the other roads are full of enemies 10-15 levels above you.

Many RPG's do this, try out Gothic, you cant go into orc territory or deep in the swamp at the start. Its called world building, an important aspects of RPGs

Also both are really buggy desu, no need to show any bias, FO3 cant run at solid 60 on a fucking 980

Have you played Fallout 1/2?

If yes, buy New Vegas. You know the Fallout universe and F3 will irritate you.

If no, buy Fallout 3. You'll learn more about the theories behind the vaults, and as long as you're here you should know that the story in F3 is insultingly stupid. If you somewhat enjoy the gameplay, you can move on to FNV.

...

Buy NV if you want an actual good game. Buy 3 if you want to discuss it with your bros on Friday night at the party.

Get 4 and the season pass and call it a day, don't forget to tip

FO3 if you just want to run around finding stuff and shooting stuff, but its very aged and the gameplay is just horrible at this point so might as well wait for fo4 to drop in price since it has 20x times better gameplay

NV if you want a half decent RPG, gameplay is also somewhat improved from fo3, still janky as all fuck but at least its not unplayable

Also this is just a thinly veiled fo3 vs nv thread isn't it?

>implying
Gee, I wonder how did I play it on Windows 7, then.

TTW isn't even worth playing, unless you really like metro tunnels or are sexually aroused by the thought of hypnotizing people into slavery.

I've got ~250 hours in NV and the first 100 was my original playthrough. Vanilla + unofficial patch and stutter remover. I think I had maybe 3 crashes in that entire time, which was because there was a lot going on and it went over the memory limit (which would have been doubled if I was using nv4gb).

You're just playing on an absolute piece of shit.

They match with the armour I use so I like it.

New Vegas is great
Fallout 3 is horrible

New Vegas, no doubt

this is probably the most honest opinion in the whole thread.

>Bethesda will never ever let another developer make a Fallout game after Fallout 4 got completely BTFO by New Vegas

F3 works fine on any Windows, you just have to either update GFWL or use a mod/tool to get rid of it.

pirate both and get another game
Fallout 3 is a better game than NV
NV is a better Fallout game than 3

this is the only reason to buy 3 Desu, i tried doing it the other way round and it was too painful
