This is a great platformer, I learned about it here, let's discuss it. There has recently been a VR update for the third game, has anyone tried it?

A Metroidvania-styled Kawase game would be cool. Not so much about finding different powerups, more perfecting your skills to access different areas.
There is a website dedicated to the game with its own forum (no downloads available though, I want that fucking 95 artwork book)
kawasefan.net
That would be awesome. The original company very recently died and another purchased the right to the IP so hopefully we would see a sequel at all
The more I think about it the more I like the way that shit sounds, where it thematically shifts the direction you go, multiple endings, god damn. Some of these levels are a lot like that already too, here is level 11
>sayonara came out 3 years ago
holy shit
I really wish the 3DS had better controls, Sayonara made me rage pretty hard.
its on steam now but its rendered at a lower resolution than the fucking 3ds for some reason and I cant get the fix to work
also look at this clever branching path, LOOK AT IT, HOW THE FUCK IM ONLY HUMAN
Yeah, Umi is different from a lot of platformers in that it's just brick-wall challenge most of the time. The skill level is high and if you can't reach it it's like fuck you, you're going nowhere until you get good enough. It'd work well with having a world to explore, getting the feeling of "fuuuck I wanna see what's up there, just gotta figure out how to climb it."
They're already sorta there with the branching level map in Sayonara, seems like the next logical step.
Love me some Umihara.
Was surprised to see it listed as VR though.
Wish i had a set so i could finally live out my dream to be the little girl.
And when you finally figure it out its amazing, IM CLOSE
I have been considering getting a VIVE just because of that but I really wonder how the first person perspective will work for this kind of game
Will it really be first person? I figured VR just meant it'd be a simple little 3D effect.
I played Yumi's Odd Odyssey a few months ago and it kicked my ass. I remember there was a level where I had to launch myself into a horizontal trampoline to clear a gap so I could make it to the door. On top of that, there was an eel enemy waiting by the door to fuck you over. I played around 13 hours and only got 2 of the endings.
Oh I guess its both

Whoa, that looks awesome.
Wish that's pretty cool
>Mfw you look down and there's some big 'ol titties, Trespasser style
They really ramped up the difficulty for the sequels especially Odd Odyssee (sayonara umihara kawase for US). Last time I tried it there was ice everyfuckingwhere
Yumi has certainly grown over the years
How do I beat the tadpole boss? Not even joking, I'm afraid.
I remember something about just getting out of the way and making it jump off, but I can't do it for the life of me.
Walk under it as it's jumping, hang over the edge when it walks back, pull yourself up as it's walking away, get rid of the frogs it spawns, and go back to hanging on the edge. Do this enough times and eventually he will leave. It can be very tough and frustrating but after you beat him a few times it will become easy.
This, for the first Umihara it takes 5 times, second takes 3 passes, third though I also cant figure out. Hes past me over 15 times and still hasn't jumped off so I don't know what to do
I played in VR mode with Vive. The entire playspace becomes the map and the camera centers on Umi. Being able to look around and see outside the normal screen bounds is nice. You can pan your head right into things in the map.
Is it still locked to that awful resolution? I know VR sets have to use lower resolutions anyways but is it somehow worse? I imagine it would be difficult to see with it panned out like that, and also are there ways to change FOV for first person view (I swear I think its using 60 FOV in the youtube videos)? Last question because I am excited, how the fuck do you even control the first person mode, mouse or a wand, what?
There may be more ice but on the other hand the swinging mechanics are less punishing and the bosses are easy. Shun's a step up in difficulty all around though.
Can someone please test GeDoSaTo? It isn't working for me and want to know if its a personal issue. I tried signing up for NeoGAF because that's the site the developer uses and has a thread for this but this website is even worse than Sup Forums has lead me to believe so can't even sign up
All display is VR spec. These VR videos are from some kind of alpha tests and do not represent the game.
This thread isn't getting away from me!!!!

There's something inexplicably comfy about this game despite the fact that it's hard af.
The music, the backgrounds, the fish enemies, all remind me of when I used to go to these Japanese market places in a rural city back when I was a kid and they were all playing traditional Japanese music and selling flowers and fish.
As much as I loved the games, I wouldn't mind if it stepped a bit away from it's arcade style levels and made a bigger more connected world.
That would be really sweet, would also make exploring more fun.
This game has a special place in my heart, even though I admit I only found out about it because Sayonara had a cute animu girl icon in the eShop, which caught my attention.
Quickly I was hooked on the rope physics.
I kinda damaged my d-pad because of this game, but I don't mind, the mechanics are great fun.
Where did her bikini bottom go? It seems like an interesting story.
Its cozy nature makes it hard to be angry after several failed attempts at a level.
The one fron Sayonara?
Avoid him until he starts jumping, then bait him in to running in to a wall.
Who would have thought Umi would one day be so lewd.
Shun for NA PSN when? It's on Steam and I'd rather play it on my comfy Vita D-Pad than suffer through it anymore with the shitty PS3 D-Pad since that will at least acknowledge my JP PSN version.
there's only a PSP port and it fucking sucks
just emulate PSX one
>Umihara Kawase
>Doesn't like: Poisonous mushrooms
>Kawase's childhood friend of norwegian descent, Emiko
>Dream: Norsk Skogkatt
And the best:
>Noko Yokoyama
>Hobby: Survival
>Occupation: Undercover Tim-Travel Policewoman
>Relationship: Kawase's descendant from the future
I know the games had no background before, but man, where the fuck does this come from?
But I want to have all 3 on my Vita. Having Sayonara+ means I'm just short Shun. I just want GOAT things, man.

The whole soundtrack for these games makes me feel kinda nostalgic for some reason, even though I only discovered the series like three years ago.
Are there perhaps more of these little drawings too?
The music is maximum comfy Japanese nostalgia.
I have one more.
So what ever happened to that level editor someone was working on?
>The original company very recently died and another purchased the right to the IP so hopefully we would see a sequel at all
Who do you mean by original company? It's traded hands at nearly ever release both in developers and publishers since its inception.
Also Degica is pretty committed to bringing niche Japanese games over so as long as someone develops it I'm sure we'll keep seeing it.
I wish I wasn't such a poorfag right now ;_;
Isn't Studio Saizensen the "original" company, and are they not still around considering the original creator of UK did Sayonara? Far as I know, only company that went under was Agatsuma, who merely published the Vita version of Sayonara and the Steam ports, with the latter being picked up by Degica. Agatsuma didn't even publish the original 3DS localization of Sayonara either - that was Natsume. I'm not entirely sure what all we've really lost here.
this is something I would read from LOL threads
I believe these snippets are from the 1995 art book, which is fucking nowhere
>which is fucking nowhere
I have to cope with these feelings yet again.
Why can't I just like mainstream games more.
smwcentral.net
>2013
fuck
I don't know I just saw it taken down from steam and heard a company shut down so expected the worst
I know exactly what you mean, I feel the same way.
The music is probably the biggest reason in really interested in the games.
It was just the publisher of certain releases, the series at large is still perfectly fine. The issue would've been who would do future localizations but then Degica happened.
Everyone knows time cops are the natural enemy of giant walking fish.
I take it they got the games back on steam after they were removed? what happened there?
I snagged them
I think the SNES game has been at a GDQ but what about the PS1 or the newer 3DS game? Seems like these would be good games for that type of thing as long as there's not a ridiculously quick route to the end
The publisher went under but another one saved the games from complete store removal.
I tried to look for some more but I have no clue how to find rare images.
Also so much low resolution stuff around, makes me feel hopeless.
I liked the lure mechanics better when they didn't throw in 20 degree angles but its definitely a lot easier to control
Yeah they are back on Steam but with the last publishers logo patched out of each game
>Umihara Kawase thread

This makes me super happy.
It's a great game.
More people should play it so it enjoys a Renaissance.
>tfw still haven't beat the second crab boss in Sayonara
this post is bad and you should feel bad
Pretty cool then
>The Dark Souls of Platforming
No thanks
it even has >muh lore that melts in my mouth
How does anyone even register at neogaf anymore anyway? I don't even have an ISP email
But it has a cute animu as a protagonist!
Yeah how can we make Umihara Kawase a meme game?
You can't just force a meme in existence, user.
It`s a weird kind of game, I remember when they pulled it me and a bunch of other people were on the verge of buying it, so glad they bought it back.
I can't believe they expect mere humans to be this precise
Umihara is a miracle of the universe and it took her FAR too long to make it out of Japan. Better late than never, though.
I'd say its worldwide availability means it currently is in one.
>UK
>lore
Aside from Sayonara's flavor text you can summarize any "lore" this series has in a sentence. You're a 20 year old sushi cook wandering through surreal fishy dreamscapes because of reasons, done.
Quirky Japanese games just kind of make me happy that they exist even if I'll never play them. It shows the wide potential of the medium or the like.
Not true I've seen it happen, we just have to try hard

Well, you could start by gathering all the pictures and just posting them everywhere.
No, things are magical as they are. If any series is comfortable in its "niche among niche" status, it's probably Umihara Kawase.
Please do not meme the Umihara into submission.
Will you be good enough to join the Elder Council of Top Umihara Kawase Players?
Hell fucking no, I don't have that level of patience. I still enjoy the games though.
I am in the top 15 for some easy levels of Sayonara, does that count? Otherwise no.
>over 200 deaths to level 33 in Sayonara
>over 180 deaths to level 48 (or was it 49? the crab boss refight)
nope.
I have twice, once on Vita and once on 3DS. Fucker is hands down my least favorite part of the game. I've never beaten stage 54 in the Vita version, though. Dem gaps too wide, mang.
I will try my best oniichan!
High death counts are how one begins the true path to gud, user.
Nope. I still can't beat stage 59.
meme magic, i volunteer to martyr, i will become the ulillillia of umihara
That tadpole triggers me so much.
Its his frog kids that trigger me with their constant hopping around and knocking you off the damn edge because trying to kill them all before that fat fuck comes back is hard as fuck.
The freak of nature just wants to be your friend.
I feel bad for Mr. Tadpole. He just wants children but you keep killing them until he is driven to suicide.
