Name a better Metroidvania

Name a better Metroidvania.

Castlevania: Symphony of the night

Fusion

La Mulana

I like ZM more. It has tighter controls and gravity is not as floaty as it is in Super.

>I like ZM more

Opinion discarded.

What's the difference between a metroidvania and a zelda game?

Environmental Station Alpha
Castlevania: SotN, AoS, & DoS
Ori and the Blind Forrest
Metroid Fusion
Cave Story +

ori easily

Guacamelee

Zelda is top down or 3rd person, openworld, and typically features puzzles.

Metroidvania is side-on, constrained to either one locale or multiple with a level select screen, and has few to no puzzles.

Character progression is often handled differently also.

Ok

fpbp. No Metroid has ever come close to being as good as Super Metroid, and sadly enough, no Castlevanias have been even half as good as SoTN

Are classic Resident Evil games metroidvanias?
Why or why not?

>Cave story
>+

>Third person, different character progression systems, combat is entirely different.

They're not.

It's the definitive version user

I want to say no for the following reasons: Early RE games focus more on puzzle solving and less on combat than metroidvania games. In RE you do a lot better if you can run past the zombies or use the bare minimum to kill them, Metroidvanias are more focused around killing everything over and over.

You don't get new abilities, only new items. There is extremely minimal backtracking, and not many secrets unlocked via items.

Arguable. But not.

>He plays Super Metroid in first person
how u do dis

>He plays Super Metroid without aiming and shooting a gun
how u do dis

Cave Story is not even a metroidvania because it is mostly linear.

3rd person isn't the same as a 2D-side on view, and you're just being asinine if you boil the combat of both down to "you shoot guns at enemies"

/tread

Most metroidvania games are largely linear.

The combat between Metroid and CV games are completely different too.
There's no RPG elements in Meatrod.
Metroid Prime is also an FPS and is still a metroidvania.

Weapons and items are still hidden in various corners that you have to find at pixel perfect spots, saves are done at very specific locations, you still progress through tiers of weaponry over time and there are certain areas that you can only access at specific times.

The only missing element is sequence breaking.

This to be honest. There are days where I feel like both games are equal but there has never been a day where I have thought Super Metroid to be the better game.

People seem to forget that the only really nonlinear Metroid titles are Super and the original Metroid.

>The combat between Metroid and CV games are completely different too.
They're both 2D platforming action games. That one focuses on ranged over melee doesn't erase that, and they have many more similarities besides.
>There's no RPG elements in Meatrod.
You still have to find or unlock various weapons or gear in order to progress and unlock new abilities. The levelling system isn't there, but character progression is otherwise identical.
>Metroid Prime is also an FPS and is still a metroidvania.
It really isn't. Their relationship is comparable to the FPS and TPS genre's - closely related, but still distinct.

RE is more whatever MP is than it is a metroidvania.

Sequence breaking is not and has never been a defining attribute of Metroidvania as a genre btw

I'm pretty sure that's just a Metroid game, not a Metroidvania

Súper Metroid was a Metroidvania before that term was even a thing, and in my opinion it did it best.

Alright, well said.

Metroid Fusion indeed. Tighter gamplay, trigger for missles instead of a toggle, oh and speaking of missles. I fucking love the missle stacking, Super Charged Ice Missles FTFW. But that's not the point. The point is its awesome. The world isn't interconnected and a massive maze, but finding those neat little tunnels between the sectirs was amazing in context.

The SA-X isnt the villain, the federation is. Finding the Etecoons and Dachora was there to remind you that some of the lifeforms can do cool shit like you. That would be the SA-X in this case, which is a metephorical representation of Super Metroid Samus, as a reminder of how fucking bad ass she is. By then ens of the game, aquiring the Screw Attack shows how she went between the ship sectors, and completes the final Fuck You Federation of the game.

Not so serious answer: Wario Land 3 was a fun concept in MetroVania level design.

I fucking can't
