The game is quite unique in that most of the message is hidden in the actual (quite complex and very difficult) gameplay mechanics itself. Some might consider it pretentious, but it sure as hell takes advantage of interactivity as a narrative tool in a way that very few other games manage.

Have you looked around lately. We are not exactly in a retard-free zone. And frankly, when it comes to Void and it's presentation, including the heavy reliance on (in the english version often poorly translated) poetry and extremely abstract, broad themes, I actually don't blame people for thinking it's pretentious. Personally I think it's a masterpiece second only to Pathologic, but it's not without it's issues and some aspects of the narrative being overtly and needlessly vague and artsy-for-artsy-sake are part of it.

Think for a second what a pain, or suffering is. It is, by the most broad definition, a signal from your body, or your brain that the situation you find yourself in is bad, and that you need to change it. Depending on the intensity, it signals how dire the situation is, and how urgent the need for a dramatic change of the situation is.
Now there are mental states and certain life conditions where existence itself is immeasurably painful. You can talk about philosophy and age of the universe and all that bullshit (which is for some reason so inexplicably popular), but the reality is: your body is build in a certain way and you can't change that. And if you are in enough pain for long enough time, ANY chance on change of your situation is still a logical step to take.

To all the anons in this thread that are feeling depressed and suicidal, please talk to a therapist if you aren't already. What you're going through is a fucking awful time, but please know that there are ways through it. I was at a complete fucking low for a few months of my life and I thought nothing would get better. I understand what you are saying and it's true a mathematical equation governs the suicide, in the same way it governs physics, but it's a mathematical equation that can take any input, which why universe guardians can descend and make you not suicide given the right verbal inputs. Sometimes even this portion of the universe can decide itself to go flip the switch from 0 to 1 due to the nature of the self governing processes overlying our brain functions that collapse into one solution when willed hard enough through the thought processes. Of course this requires understanding it in the first place and the right input-output procedures early in life, but still, it's true.

It's why Yamato suicide techniques worked so well because the inputs collapsed the brain functions from 1 to 0 rapidly since early in the development if so willed, and thus could lead higher numbers of 10 to 0 even faster at the cost of 1 to 0.
