I'm nowhere yet myself so I can't really give much good advice, just look around a bit and read up on different programming languages first then decide on to focus on.
It doesn't really matter what you pick as a first language as long as you stick with it so you can get a grip on how to structure programs and get a feel for it and you can always expand your horizon later on.
It helps to start small.

Their publisher of Sayonara and Code of Princess announced bankrupcy soon after porting the Umihara games to PC. The developer of the games are still around, and even published Blade Arcus themselves yesterday, although it seems they're still helped by Degica.

Environmental Station Alpha has a grapple hook that has some similarities to umihara. It's not as flexible and it doesn't have the same degree of depth, but it may scratch the itch somewhat.

I did it in 2009, I don't buy games on Steam and I like playing on the original hardware. Last I checked Snes9x still has problems with it (at least it has problems with the ROM I downloaded from Emuparadise a long time ago). It's probably my favorite game so I didn't mind buying a complete physical copy of it.
