They tried fixing it by adding more biomes, structures, variations etc. What it actually did was make everything even more similar because you can for example go on a volcanic world, find a settlement of fish people even though volcanic terrain doesn't suit them, find a grass biome, dig underneath and discover a tomb, or maybe even snow and ice.
