Hey Sup Forums i'm looking for an MMO to play and i've narrowed it down to these two. I'm wondering which of these two are the most enjoyable even if the current meta/content is shit. I already own the base game of GW2 but since the expansion i can't do higher level contents. I'm also too late since the expansion was half off a few days ago. But then again i want to play FF14 but since it's sub-based it's gonna cost me a lot more in the long run i think. But then again buying the base game and the expansions alone would already grant me 60 days of sub in total.
TLDR; help me choose between the two Hard Mode: You aren't allowed to suggest other games for me to play
Andrew Long
Depends what you're into.
Luis Morgan
If anything, don't play FF14 Content comes out at a snails pace, the constant grind for gears is not rewarded with well thought out, hard boss fights. Enforced DPS timers is artificial difficulty at its finest for mmos
Dominic Perry
if u want easy themepark do whatever you want mmo, go with gw2. a new map came out on tuesday and it has been pretty enjoyable so far.
i don't play ff14 but it seems like a more traditional mmo with a big grind
Joshua Parker
It's really hard to get into XIV if you've played and enjoyed combat from the likes of GW2, Tera, Wildstar, etc. But quite a lot of people love that style so it really just depends on what you enjoy.
Adrian Baker
I mostly want to do raids because i've never reached that high enough to actually do any content that requires high levels of cooperation. Though in foresight, that seems a lot of stress and i just want to do my rotations without worrying about maximum dps/healing output.
Christopher Perry
Well you're in luck, both games fulfill that just fine. That being said, if you're rolling DPS in XIV, queue times can be quite ridiculous.
Gavin Collins
But don't most MMOs have to have insane cooperation and perfect skill rotation especially in high level content? Or is it just autism?
Ayden Jones
GW2 Is currently hot garbage arenanet took an allright game and obliterated it over the course of two years. The ending to the main story will make you uninstall the game gaurenteed.
I haven't played FF14 but a friend of mine has sunk quite a few hours into it.
Last MMO I enjoyed was WoW so my opinion probably doesn't count.
Ryan Flores
With GW2, no. I complete fractals and dungeons regularly with complete strangers and we do just fine. Once in a while I'll join a group that didn't state they were speedrunning it in the LFG tool, and get flamed, but otherwise it's a breeze to just try different shit. With XIV, in dungeons I don't think people really give a shit if you aren't being optimal.
Now, raids are different. In both games they do require communication and more effort. Which, I guess is easy once you actually find a group you click with, but that's a whole chapter of effort in itself. So if you already have friends to play with, then go play whichever they do, if not, you're going to have to look in /vg/, ingame, or other websites to find a raid group that is newbie friendly.
Isaac Wood
>in both games
You played both? How would you rate the two of them out of 10?
Jayden Bailey
like saidm both games have raid content. I don't know anything about the HoTs raids, but XIV has a casual set and then a 'hardcore' set. There is obviously more casual-geared content than hardcore, but current savage/extreme primal content in particular should provide a nice challenge.
Otherwise, the GW2 story is hot garbage. XIV does drag in places, but it's a much better place than GW2. I personally find XIV better, but that's just my opinion and the grind isn't for everyone.
Who kills fun more, Minfillia or the SJW crew?
Kayden Wright
not that user but:
GW2 pre HoTs: 7/10 GW2 post HoTs: 4/10 (how could you fuck it all up?)
XIV: 7-7.5/10
obviously a bit biased here because I actively subscribed to one of these. ymmv
Aiden White
Yeah. I'd rate GW2 a 7.5/10 I'd rate XIV a 7/10
The only reason I rate GW2 a .5 higher than XIV, is because I care more about the GW2 universe than I do FF's. I just never connected with it, but with guild wars, man I can get lost in it. But that's a little bit of nostalgia talking since GW1 is what got me hooked. That being said, even though GW2s story is kind of mediocre, the mechanics more than make up for it. Sure, scarlet was hot shit, but that Marionette fight? God fucking damn phenomenal.
Oh, and I just dislike XIV's combat mechanics but to each their own there!
Levi Baker
>grind
Please explain. GW2s grinding only had to do with getting legendaries, and even then, it was more of a status symbol than being required to be able to finish fractals or raids.
Matthew Rivera
you're 8 years too late
just find a decent mp game
William Walker
I meant XIV's grind. I personally found the HoTs mastery system grindy as fuck when it came out. Also the whole 'replacing the quests with heart-affinity' thing just feels repetitive for me. Cleaning out a map was hard for me.
Your first 1-30 in XIV is honestly the worst part of the game, but they try their hardest to alleviate it with EXP increases left and right.
Logan Brown
Wildstar is my go to shitty free mmo, better than those two at least.
Wyatt Butler
Honestly, even with newly added raids end-game in GW2 is a joke. If you want traditional end-game go with FF14. I have not note that combat is the major sticking point for a lot of people in FF14 and they can't stand 2.5 second GCD.
Lincoln Brown
>google Wildstar >comic/cartoon aesthetic
No.
Wyatt Adams
It's a dead game by now anyways.
Christian Bailey
as someone who plays both actively
GW2 has good combat but everything else ranges from decent to mediocre, most of the game's best music was ripped straight from GW1. i primarily play GW2 for pvp and completely disregard PVE
FFXIV is phenomenal in everything except its combat which is only fun when the fights are complex dance mechanics. in general it's ill suited to fights where targets move around constantly which makes PVP a nightmare among other reasons, but has far better PVE than GW2
GW2's main appeal though is buy to play, you can pick it up and play it whenever you want and not feel some sort of guilt if you take a break for however long, and you can play it alongside any other game you want. XIV overall is a more complete MMO experience though with a level of aesthetic that in my opinion is unmatched in the industry
Alexander Reed
What i definitely liked about GW2 are the events it feels like everything is actually happening in real time albeit repeatedly but it still gives the illusion that you are actually having an adventure, as opposed to the common formula such as go to x, kill y, come back to z.
What does FF14 have in comparison?
Nathaniel Hernandez
I suppose FATEs would be a direct comparison.
Xavier Cruz
FFXIV has the FATE system, which is basically the same thing as a GW2 event. Generally only specific zones have fates being actively completed (especially in lower pop servers), but thanks to recent promotion for youkai watch a lot of early fates are being done again. Some are quest chains, though not as extensive as the GW2 system in my experience.
Lucas Diaz
FFXIV has the FATE system which is really its own take on the dynamic event/rift/whatever warhammer online had thing.
basically 1 or infinity players can go participate in the FATE and completing it successfully has rewards, the main one being EXP but some fates give special rewards in the form of mini pets or currency used for special items. most aren't too difficult but there's a few boss ones that can wipe an entire area or zone if they aren't completed successfuly, like Odin. if you really want to immerse yourself in the adventure you can read the story flavor text for each event.
I would say now is a good time to get a taste of the system in general though because there's a special event going on that involves completion of low level fates to progress.
Xavier Brooks
>but there's a few boss ones that can wipe an entire area or zone if they aren't completed successfuly, like Odin. Wait, what. I've been playing XIV for a long time, and I knew about occasional big FATEs, but I didn't know they "wiped the map." How does that work? Like, if it's in Southern Thanalan, and I'm in Southern Thanalan but not fighting it, or in Eastern Thanalan, and the party fails to kill it, I'll die too?
Isaiah Watson
>What does FF14 have in comparison?
FATE is technically a dynamic event system, but not really because it's much simpler and less varied. Dynamic events in GW2 are basically full quest chains with win or lose states and most branch off in some way, while FATEs are basically are on-off generated events without substantial context. Thing is because of their more generated nature FATEs don't come off as repeated the way dynamic events do because you will see same ones repeated if you stick in the zone for a while considering latter run on timers.
Ryan Jones
oops, meant for
Sebastian Perry
GW2 is more casual and you'll feel like you're accomplishing something even if you play 30 minutes every day. FF14 is more along the lines of your typical full-time MMORPG, even if it does have a lot of conveniences like having all classes on one character, etc. Both games' expansions were rock solid, though.
Bentley Foster
Both have free trials and I think GW2 is free to play now, so try them out first. If anything I enjoy FF a lot more because of the story, GW2 was just too generic for me
Benjamin Butler
well for example, when odin spawns in a random black shroud zone, the special weather covers the entire shroud, but if he's in south shroud his zantetsuken covers everyone in south shroud with 9999 damage, but it doesn't stretch to other areas
Michael Rivera
I wish FF14 had a proper F2P option, even if limited, instead of fucking timed trial. I had that feeling like I'm on the clock all the time.
Caleb Stewart
The Odin fate covers a pretty large area and you do have to at least hit the boss once to be eligible for the Zantetsuken finisher if the party fails to down Odin fast enough
Ryder Sullivan
Oh wow, that's pretty radical. Hope I get to do that someday
Lucas Ross
XIV is dogshit
>Required Story >One character "allowed", rip alts
Leo Bennett
Nobody is forcing you to have only one character. If you want to have seperate characters for seperate classes, that's on you.
Gabriel Young
you cant go wrong with either one user. got my a8s weapon and quit due to content drought in ff14 and curently enjoying some gw2 expansion. i am continuously amazed at how detailed the world in this game is.
Lucas Hill
60 days isn't enough for an mmojrpg
Joseph Campbell
what happened with hot to lower the score?
Jacob Miller
I really just wasn't happy with it. They changed how Fractals work, mastery grind was terrible, and the story was a step above the Scarlet Briar arc, which is probably the most contrived story I've ever seen in an MMO.
Christian Murphy
LOTRO has been mine the past couple of weeks. Definitely better than XIV and GW2 too.
Nicholas Ward
They made a recent change to the newer maps to give even MORE exp and for your masteries along with additional rewards, so there's literally no reason not to do it these days. Using a shitton of free boosters also helps.
Kayden Scott
GW2 has no subscrption and has a rather lengthy free "trial".
You can give that a shot and see how you like it.
Alexander Torres
>be playing gw2 >randomly see a airship floating in the distance >meh its probably just a background prop >later stumble my way up the mountain >find this entire fucking secret base >explore it and climb up >eventualy i find myself on top of an airship with a path that goes even higher up
mfw i realize i am now on top of the airship i saw previously
Jeremiah Phillips
What was this again?
But yea GW2 has some cool exploration for those that like running around.
Cooper Johnson
>just find a decent mp game There's no non tps 3rd person pvp game out there that doesn't involve leveling during the matches
Michael Gonzalez
>I have not note that combat is the major sticking point for a lot of people in FF14 and they can't stand 2.5 second GCD. Just play a caster and it'll be a non-issue and feel exactly the same like WoW.
Kayden Murphy
not so secret jumping puzzle in gendaran fields
Elijah Hall
Played both, plz stay away from GW2, gw1 was great, 2 is a steamy piece of crap, exploration is fun tough, everything else is garbage.
FfXIV is not much different from wow, it's like a single player jrpg with the option to go multiplayer, dungeons are fun, too bad the game locks every single dungeon/raid by forcing you to do boring ass fetch quests
TLDR: pick your poison
Gavin Garcia
Is the community alive at all? I played the game for a bit a while ago, it seemed pretty dead back then
Ian Murphy
Depends on the server. I haven't played much in a couple of yearsish but even Brandywine was kind of dead as far as low-level dungeons go although I did see a handful of people still running around and questing.
Apparently the main population resides on two servers now: Landroval and something else but who knows. Just pick a good server. That's the main thing. You need a server with people on it.
