This is absolute bullshit. I haven't seen a single person declare this game to be the best anything since October at the latest, everyone is so paranoid of being associated with the boogeyman fanbase that criticizing at least a few aspects of the game is practically a requirement when it gets brought up.

Not OP, but I only played it a week ago so I'm looking for some discussion /vg/ is out of the question and I heard Sup Forums had great discussions on it, or at least so they say, I found nothing but endless shitposting in the archives.

Eh? It's not any different that people that claim FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Persona 4 or whatever JRPG they grew up with have amazing storytelling and/or characters. This sort of behavior is nothing new and it's mostly due to a lack of exposure to better storytelling.
I have no idea why would you single the UT fanbase as guilty of this.

There was a hint of truth to them, in the initial hype many people did overlook the game's flaws because it was such a novel little game that came out of seemingly nowhere. It felt like such a breath of fresh air many people overstated its positives. I should know, I'm guilty of this.

The falseflagging is real though, and all discussion of the "terrible fanbase" seems directed towards this relatively short period between September-October that people still think is going on for some reason. Maybe it is in some fringe parts of the internet, but it's not the popular opinion by any means.
