Collectibles are good when
1.) Collecting them gives you access to new powers or levels or content
2.) Collecting them requires completing some sort of task or challenge
For example, I'd say the stars in Mario 64 qualify as good collectibles. Collecting them requires mastering various challenges, and collecting enough of them opens up new areas to explore.
