Obscure DS game called Again. You can buy it for under 5 dollars. It's a visual novel where you solve crimes by peering into the memory of objects.
Should I play super robot wars if im not into mecha at all, but enjoy strategy rpgs?
Should I start with the n64 fan translation, or an earlier/later game?

I've heard people dissing the remake's music but I thought it was just as good. The MSX just had a very particular sound to it and not being exactly the same probably triggered said people.
Shame I had to use a guide after a point. Those fucking puzzles, man.
This is fantastic and if you dont think so you're a filthy ashigaru

The only translated ones are SRW OG1, OG2, and J on the GBA, Alpha Gaiden on the PS1, and some assorted older ones like 1-3 on the Gameboy and SNES.
I'd say play OG1 and OG2 since they're all original characters and not anime crossover since you say you're not into mecha.
There's a Japan only PS2 remake of OG1 and OG2, called OGs, and some sequels after that on the PS2/3/4. The one that just came out, Moon Dwellers, is getting a (probably questionable quality) english release in Southeast Asia in a few days so you could import that. It's for the PS4.
From my favorite old SNES game:

You can't get more obscure than a whole unused track, and I say it quite well compliments the one you posted.
Few are the times when the villain themes in SRW aren't god tier
