4U is the best in the franchise.
Start with MHFU just so you'll get used to how hard it is and to grasp the basics. Once you beat Low rank, you can stop. This will be enough to understand the basics and also to be able to appreciate the next entries in the series, both technically and graphically. The game play and graphics and variety all improve, but start with mhfu anyways (It's fun regardless and will make you a better player, since the game gets easier)
Bane?
3 is only good for learning the basics, easy weapon upgrade trees and easy solo campaign, only local multiplayer sadly, but thats were 4u shines, online multiplayer (full of cuntbags and faggots but watcha gonna do), introducing IG and CB, new mounting mechanic and some of the best monsters of the whole franchise. Regarding generations, its a really cool game, but is way cooler for people who played the first MH games, as its monster pool is a mix of the best monsters of every generation, but still a cool game on its own
3u 3ds has no online. 4u is full of shit like apex monsters and 140 guild quests.
So get gen as it just came out and try 3u wiiU when it's on sale.
4U is the best and is also the best game to start.
PCSX2 and Monster Hunter.
Then get PPSSPP and Monster Hunter Freedom.
If you're not down for this combo, you're not fit for the autistic grind of MonHun.
Thanks that's exactly what I was going to ask about.
I hear that it's more of a fantasy hunting simulator where you spend 10x more time preparing for the hunt than actually killing bosses. How true is this? That's what I'm looking for.
4U is absolutely the best place to start. 3 has shitty underwater fights and the beginning is boring as pancakes and takes CENTURIES before the real game actually begins.
Gen has some cool new shit but 4U is definitely the best place to start.
I would say is like JRPG boss DLC for dark souls, ofc MH was before, but you get the idea
>tfw no mhgenerations on vita
Once you get the hang of it, preperation will take less time, usually about one or two minutes, depending on how hard the quest is: three.
Not OP, but does MH4U has that camera-lock system as Generation?
When you're not hunting you're spending time looking at armor and weapons you want to grind for ,based on fashion and stats, and setting up the mechanics to multiply items so that you don't have to grind for them in the field as much as you would have to without them.
>try out aerial hammer in training
>love it
>build purity hammer level 2
>test it on a shitty drome
>2 minutes
>mfw
the lock-on cam is present since 3u
Just go straight to Generations. It has literally every monster from every other game from what I understand, including all the areas and towns.
You spend 10x more time farming the same missions over and over hoping for rare drops to craft armor and weapons than anything else is more like.
4U, but get Gen too if you want to actually enjoy online. If you're not pirating, 4U should be easy to get for damn near to nothing secondhand.
3u
endgame is not a chore, soundtrack rules, monsters are great, sets are great. on a tv...
i play mhfu on ppsspp (and psp back in the day) to learn to appreciate it a bit, then bought mh4u when it came out. i'm playing tri for gc on dolphin right now.
i would say that mh4u is best, but yeah like others are saying, maybe try mhfu for a bit to build appreciation first or whatever.
Emulate freedom unite to see if you like it. If you like it, get generations since it's new and has active online, if you're an enthusiast enough to want more, get 4U
Although every game has its own good parts, it's a series that gets technically better for each generation. It was hard going back to FU after Tri, and it's now even hard for me to go back to 4U after Generation because of the new styles and arts.
Either way, I would recommend playing 4U first since it's very newbie-friendly. It's the first to have its own proper singleplayer story and it introduces its mechanics in a good pace.
Tri and 3U are extremely slow to get going, and it feels like you're playing a 2-3 hour tutorial. Generation is kinda the opposite, where the game almost expects you to know everything already.
mh4u is the best imo too
but it's roster lacking nargacuga is a crime
also barroth and barioth I guess
>where the game almost expects you to know everything already.
it's because it's an anniversary game, mainly targeted at old players just for fun
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the Wii U
Easily the best, especially for a new player. The best in the franchise regardless of that, as well.
>making new players deal with underwater
fuck you
>3 is only good for learning the basics
>only local multiplayer sadly
That's completely untrue. Tri HAD online while 3 Ultimate on Wii U STILL HAS online with plenty of novice and extremely experienced hunters who love the game that will help.
MH4U is the strongest game in the series, but Generations is what most people are playing right now. I don't think there's a problem with MHGen, so it's definitely an option.
>liking underwater stages
Did you also enjoyed the water temple in OOT? pretty sure thats some kind of autism
My first MH was Tri. I didn't have problems with underwater and I played on a fucking Wii remote+nunchuck
4U is visually nicer (dat framerate) but Gen is what everyone is playing right now.
>where the game almost expects you to know everything already.
Not really though. All it did was make all the stupid make steak/make mega potion/gather mushroom/etc. tutorial quests optional. There's not really a deep end to be thrown into with monhun it's honestly pretty simple.
4U is a great place to start
This guy is a pretentious moron. 4U does everything you need to introduce you to the basics and it does a while being more fun and less shitty.
>It's fun regardless
No. It's not. The series has introduced a million features to improve upon the basic game. There's no point in playing FU. Seriously.
Mh4u will teach you to play well.
Gen will keep you a shitter because it's too easy and hunter arts trivialise content.
>I hear that it's more of a fantasy hunting simulator where you spend 10x more time preparing for the hunt than actually killing bosses. How true is this?
Untrue. The majority of your hunt is spent in actual combat with the monster itself.
Still untrue, but believable, if you consider reading dialogue, gathering missions where you elect not to fight and extreme late-game scenarios where you attempt to figure out an "optimal" build for your playstyle as there are a large number of (very minor) differences aside from "what kind of weapon do I wanna use."
The "grind" is apparent in only two ways: gathering ore and defeating the monsters for the low % drop items. But, that IS the game. Fighting and beating the monsters. The drop items simply let you craft different (better) weapons and armors so you can do it again, just finish faster and/or with more style. That's the game. Fight monsters. Beat monsters. Do it all again, but slightly differently. The difficulty is simply a reflection that no weapon will kill a monster in only a few hits and no armor will ever make you invulnerable. Battles always take time, and the monster's health and damage output scale with whether you're hunting in a group or not.
It's a shame about gammoth
her size really merits a better fight and her own giant 1 zone arena at least for the 5* fight
MH4U is definitely the best in the series
Although MH4U suffers from the following, MHGen does so at a significantly worse extent.
Pacing issues, balance issues, and grinding.
Get either 4U or Generations.
Good secondary choices if you can't stand the 3DS resolution: Tri on Dolphin, P3rd + translation patch on PPSSPP, or 3U on WiiU.
It's gonna be better on NX for those that only want better graphics.
Don't listen to the idiots telling you to play Online or old games like FU.
True, but I think it can be a bit overwhelming to introduce all the towns after beating the first monster. 4U did it better with it introducing one town for each rank, but for people who are familiar with the game it would probably be tedious.
4U has the best pacing in the series imo. But yeah, they fucked up on this side for Generations (with balance and new weapon stuff as well).
Doubt they'll take all those ideas for 5 anyway. Generations is the just the new Portable of the series.
but user, MHFU and MHGEN, are really different in terms of mechanics and movement.
If the towns actually served individual purposes like they did in 4u then I would be more inclined to agree, but in Gen they are all basically Bherna with all the same shops and without access to the palico ranch. I would consider having to talk to every single fucking npc more tedious than overwhelming too.
>Monster Hunter 3 for Wii U
Portable is suffering.
There is nothing wrong with the, like, 10 underwater hunts of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U. You seriously suck big time if you feel the controls while fighting against Lagi, Gobul and Luds infuriated you to the point of hating the entire game. "Oh no, I had to follow Ceadeus for 15 minutes twice, but because you can't kill him there I hate that fight!" Underwater combat is absolutely fine, ESPECIALLY since 3U introduced the L-button monster lock-on as well has gave an actuall way to beat the shit outta Plessy. I would love to see a return of underwater combat.
I didn't mind OoT's requirement to quickly taking 1 second out of the gameplay experience to un-equip and re-equip the Iron Boot to sink and float over the course of a 2 hour dungeon as a 10-year-old, no. What does that have to do with the free swimming 3-D combat in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U?

You forgot the most important thing:
handheld
I just wanna play on a tv, Capcom. Seriously. I'm not gonna play a handheld in public or at work where people can see me. I'll play at home...but if I'm at home I want to play on my tv, not a 3 inch x 5 inch screen.
Fuck.
Nah, I'd like it too. It was legitimately super fun and I love fighting aquatic monsters.
I started on 3U... I'm a Moga Village Hunter at heart. Swimming is second nature.
when it sells as well on the West as it does in Japan your opinion will matter
until then rev up your 3DS
Portability, or the ability to play at 1440p, 144hz, with a decent audio setup and an ergonomic controller.
Portability is NOT worth losing the above mentioned shit.
Japan is just MH's biggest market and they're all fucking casuals anyways so it's no surprise we're tied to these shit handheld devices.
you'll be happy with GG/5 on NX then
It was a completely new environment. It was, both literally and figuratively, immersive.
It can be improved, what can't? And if done, all the better! I'll repeat, I would love to see a return of underwater combat. I doubt I'm the only one who felt it added more than subtracted from the Monster Hunter experience.
You're a man with skills and taste. I like you. Moga Village for life.
I miss Loc Lac, though...
>Need to play on Console?
MH3U
>Want the best overall experience/most content?
MH4U
>Want something that changes things up a bit?
Generations
If you haven't played before 3U or 4U would be your best bet.
Insect Glaive is hands down one of the most fun weapons when used correctly
>Pin or topple monster
>get all 3 extracts
>stab like there's no fucking tomorrow
Hunting horn is equal if not a close second, buffs for fucking days
Why is she so best?
These people are clear examples of the need of "git gud" and "only played tri and never anything previous...since then they wouldn't complain about situational awareness, camera position or positioning compared to earlier."
tl;dr
These guys didn't git gud
You are now the last monster you CAPTURED
How fucked are you
thats not guildmarm
Because the Guild Sweetheart was enthusiastic, supportive, diligent and above all looked great in a skirt.
>Zinogre
I wonder if hunters ever tried to get the know of a Zinogre
Because she had the best lines
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
I don't want to be an angry frog
Gameplay:
>Do you want to play with other people at all
Play Gen
>Do you want to have the richest foundation on the series?
Play Freedom Unite until it stops being fun, then play 3U until it stops being fun, then play 4U until it stops being fun
>Are you a hyper weeb?
Play Portable 3rd
>Do you care more about classic aesthetic and atmosphere over over the top monsters and enviroments?
Play Freedom Unite
Role-playing:
>Do you prefer being a village hunter in a world of giant monsters, doing your duty to your people?
Play Freedom Unite
>Do you prefer being a world traveling hero who slays the most dangerous and powerful of beasts to the admiration of all?
Play 4U
>Do you prefer people with down syndrome over cats?
Play 3U
just get the most recent one dumbass, it'll have the most active online playerbase
>Do you prefer people with down syndrome over cats?
I think you mean
>Do you want the best companions in the series
What the FUCK did they do to my god damned hunting horn
I just did a Zamtrios quest, it took me 39 minutes to kill the fucking thing with my horn. And the hunting horn was my second best weapon before this game.
I even tested, I did this exact same quest, with the same armor and everything, with a greatsword of the exact same power and sharpness and all, and I didn't even take half as long.
Why the fuck did they look at the hunting horn, of all weapons, and decide to nerf it to the ground?
I'm knocking out the little shit, I know it's not a lack of skill on my part. They just actually destroyed this weapon.
...
Tribaby detected
not him, but better be a tribaby than a FUfag
It actually is a love letter to the pre-3rd gen games. 3rd gen replaced a lot of the really shitty older monsters with much better similar monsters, but Generations forgoes the good monsters and brings back all the shitty ones.
It's still a good game, and introduces lots of cool shit in styles, but 4U has way better monsters.
3U and 4U are both awesome
MHgenerations is awesome too but not good for beginners, it's made for fans
don't listen to FU memers, it's good but 3U and 4U are much better
if you have to get one get 4U
>Playing Fu years after 3U and 4u got released
WHERES MY BARIOTH

here
I fucking hate that MH is on nothing but 3DS, at least throw Wii U an upscaled version. 3DS controls are the most uncomfortable shit.
Tri for maximum comfy but theres no online anymore so that's a bummer but the SP is one of the best out of the whole series IMO, if you can get it on Dolphin then it's even better. 4U for the online and content but I have no idea how active it is right now.
>I am the trap fox
I could definitely live with that
What is this?
>Gammoth
THANKS Sup Forums NOW I HAVE A VAGINA
Stories look so good.
Capcom have really been the only ones with Nintendo to push the 3DS hardware.
Hope we get it in the west
what about Tri??
i want to try MH in the Dolphin emulator
This isn't cute.

What makes Tri comfier than 3U, which still has online?
I'll admit that Loc Lac was a dustier and more "awesome" atmosphere and that 3 Ultimate turned up the contrast and saturation and brightness (Tanzia Port being SUPER COLORFUL), but what are you getting at?
Welp the other thread died, repostan
Anyone else need to get their Nakarkos urgent done? I figure we can all get ours done and then do some early HR turns or something. I helped someone else out with theirs the other day but there's no fucking way I'm bothering with this shit with randoms.

No idea I haven't played it and I didn't properly read the OP lel, but if it's just as good then it's no problem.
...
3U is better than Tri. It literally is Tri multiplied by 6 for content.
It's the same game but in HD with fucktons more missions and monsters and equipment and slightly better handling with the first implementation of L-targeting a monster. I'd say the ONLY difference is that Tri had Loc Lac online (now dead) where as Ultimate has Tanzia Port online (still very much alive).
