If you're joining, you do not need to start the game. If you can't connect to a lobby, it's probably already started.

If you're new and it's your first time hosting: Pad the buffer somewhere between 15 - 30. If you need to go over 30, don't bother hosting. Each buffer frame adds basically 16.67 ms of input lag.
Probably a stupid question, but does netplay work when the users have two different operating systems installed? I can't think of anything else that could be the problem. I have Linux and my friend has a Mac, and the connect button doesn't do anything when either of us hosts. I'm just tryna play some Melee.
You can set up a special portable instance of dolphin for netplay to avoid messing up the settings for other games.

No, but we both have the Netplay Community Build. There aren't any cheats in the list.

Yeah I know. When I go to "AR Codes" for the regular version of Melee, cheats are there. For this Netplay Community build, nothing shows up. I think it's a connection issue, since he can't even get into the room I'm hosting. I tried port forwarding and using direct connect, and I tried the transversal server but the same shit happens.
Just realized that the stable Linux version is still 4.0, while the development version is 5.0. So If we both got stable 4.0, it might work. It still seems weird that we can't even connect to each other at all.

No clue, it's just from personal experience. Notice how i said "seems" bb I play melee with a friend of mine almost every day on 4.0 and it works well. We've tried using 5.0 a few times and it was just bad.
